Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compendium of approximately three hundred texts--in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, Ethiopic, Syriac, Coptic, and other languages--that are important for the study of Jewish messianism and early Christology. In recent decades, the study of Jewish messianic ideas and how they influenced early Christology has become an incredibly active field within biblical studies. Numerous books and articles have engaged with the ancient sources to trace various themes, including "Messiah" language itself, exalted patriarchs, angel mediators, "wisdom" and "word," eschatology, and much more. But anyone who attempts to study the Jewish roots of early Christianity faces a challenge: the primary sources are wide-ranging, involve ancient languages, and are often very difficult to track down. Books are littered with citations and a host of other sometimes obscure writings, and it can be difficult to sort them all out. This book makes a much-needed contribution by bringing together the most important primary texts for the study of Jewish messianism and early Christology--nearly three hundred in total--and presenting the reader with essential information to study them: the critical text itself (with apparatus), a fresh translation, a current bibliography, and thematic tags that allow the reader to trace themes across the corpus. This volume aims to be the starting point for all future work on the primary sources that are relevant to messianology and Christology. About the Author Gregory R. Lanier (PhD, University of Cambridge) is Associate Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. He has written extensively on early Christology and published Old Testament Conceptual Metaphors and the Christology of Luke's Gospel (Bloomsbury, 2018); Septuaginta: A Reader's Edition (Hendrickson, 2018); and Is Jesus Truly God? How the Bible Teaches the Divinity of Christ (Crossway, 2020). He also serves as associate pastor of River Oaks Church in Lake Mary, Florida.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of the divine name in the original writings of the Christian Greek Scriptures (New Testament)This book examines the use of the Tetragrammaton by the inspired writers of the Christian Greek Scriptures. Is biblical knowledge static, remaining the same today as it was a thousand years ago? Or does biblical knowledge grow with each successive generation, deriving benefit from discoveries made in its own time? Without doubt, biblical knowledge grows.Witnesses worldwide strongly defend the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture. The inspired Christian Greek Scriptures were complete when John finished writing in 98 C.E.[ Thus, Scripture itself does not change. On the other hand, as more is learned of biblical history, culture, and ancient manuscripts, our knowledge of Scripture grows. The New World Bible Translation Committee understood that biblical knowledge grows when it searched for evidence of God's name in Christian Greek Scripture manuscripts between 1947 and 1949. Again today, with an ever increasing availability of biblical information, we must re-examine the same question of the Tetragrammaton's presence in the Christian Scriptures. This book explores the fascinating world of ancient second and third century documents, though it was written for the reader who does not have specialized training in Hebrew or Greek languages. However, it does not discuss the Tetragrammaton from the perspective of theology. This is a study of the ancient Greek manuscripts themselves.

Book excerpt: "Twenty-five years after it first appeared, Jellicoe's classic work is still one of the most comprehensive introductions to the Septuagint and cognate studies. Its completeness makes it valuable not only as a textbook, but also as a reference tool for those working in the Septuagint. In bringing together the principal features of twentieth-century Septuagint studies, the author provides a wealth of valuable information. The first part of the book traces the origins and transmission history of the LXX. The second part moves to a discussion of the various LXX manuscripts, versions, and critical editions, along with a brief discussion of language and style. The appendixes, bibliography, and various indexes increase the resource value of this volume."
