Book excerpt: When everything falls apart, when there is no more hope, when confusions, frustrations, incomprehension, blankness, and ignorance stand at the door, education remains the only alternative that lights up our way and transcends the challenge. Teachers, you are the masters of the world. You inform about the past and prepare the future while ensuring the present. Your reward is eternal as your investment is everlasting. No man, no city, no nation, no continent and not even the world should ever ignore the power of education while striving for a better society. Educating children resides in a world with so much potential, therefore, I ask you to enter it as if it was the last day for the rest of your life. 1st: Thou shall understand thy purpose for educating children. Education can only be saved with those who teach because it is purposeful.

It also acts as an aid to teachers in order to improve their skills, jobs, and lives. The text suggests student-centered teaching methods and is organized into 10 sections. The first nine commandments (sections) are quick, easy reading, and directly related to teaching. The Tenth Commandment comprises the key portion of the text and assists in executing the first nine. It also addresses a teacher's personal life, which is tightly interwoven with one's career. The commandments are Thou Shalt: (1) Remember that We're in It for the Children; (2) Remember that Discipline Precedes Learning; (3) Demonstrate the Relevancy of Learning; (4) Dangle the Carrot High; (5) Remember that Precious Stones Come from the Most Unlikely Rocks; (6) Remember that the Little Things Make a Big Difference; (7) Erase All Question Marks Thoroughly; (8) Remember that the Exceptional Teacher Is Always Learning; (9) Not Underestimate the Power of Communication; and (10) Remember that a Positive Attitude Is Your Most Important Possession. Book excerpt: You know them. But do you understand them? The Ten Commandments have become so familiar to us that we don't think about what they actually mean. They've been used by Christians throughout history as the basis for worship, confessions, prayer, even civil law. Are these ancient words still relevant for us today? Their outward simplicity hides their inward complexity. Jesus himself sums up the entire law in a pair of commandments: Love God with all your heart, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Peter Leithart re-introduces the Ten Commandments. He shows us how they address every arena of human life, giving us a portrait of life under the lordship of Jesus, who is the heart and soul of the commandments.

Book excerpt: The founders of the United States were well aware of religious differences in the new nation. Oppression had forced varied European religious groups to seek homes elsewhere, some in the new world of America. Governmental pressures toward conformity in religion had in the past led to corruption and civil strife. Thus, Congress made a dual assertion in its First Amendment to the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." However, the ethical foundations of American society--and therefore its laws--intermingle with the moral codes of religions, including the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments. This handbook helps bring understanding and meaning to the controversies that have arisen in present day society over the application of the Ten Commandments to public law and moral problems. Applications can be logical and legal, or can violate the separation of church and state called for in the First Amendment. Part One provides background on the Ten Commandments. It gives the various versions found in the Old Testament, and explains the non-Israelite influences on those versions (the Hammurabi Code, for example). The moral thinking of the ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hebrew cultures is examined. The modern Jewish tradition is detailed, as well as the different interpretations placed on the Ten Commandments by Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and other Protestants. Part Two focuses on the modern controversies, assessing the differing sides of each. Among the many controversies covered are government funding of faith-based charities, posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, science versus religion in schools, prayer in public places, blue laws, stem cell research, cloning, euthanasia, capital punishment, abortion and war, racial profiling and covenant marriages.

Book excerpt: An in-depth study of how each of the Ten Commandments had a historical impact on the development of laws in America and affected the legal philosophy of our government framers. For example, the 4th Commandment-"Keep Holy the Sabbath" PENNSYLVANIA FRAME OF GOVERNMENT, April 25, 1682, Article XXII: "That as often as any day of the month...shall fall upon the first day of the week, commonly called the Lord's Day, the business appointed for that day shall be deferred till the next day, unless in the case of emergency." U.S. CONSTITUTION, 1787, Article I, Section 7, Paragraph 2 "If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law" Read how the Ten Commandments affected the views of America's leaders: "The Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount contain my religion" - John Adams, Nov. 4, 1816, letter to Thomas Jefferson. "The fundamental basis of this nation's laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul. I don't think we emphasize that enough these days." - Harry S Truman, Feb. 15, 1950, Attorney General's Conference. See references to the Ten Commandments in court cases: "The Ten Commandments have had an immeasurable effect on Anglo-American legal development" - U.S. District Court, Crockett v. Sorenson, W.D. Va. (1983) "It is equally undeniable ...that the Ten Commandments have had a significant impact on the development of secular legal codes of the Western World." - U.S. Supreme Court, Stone v. Graham, (1980) (Rehnquist, J., dissenting) An ideal book for students, teachers, journalists, writers and those interested in researching the foundations of American law!
