Book excerpt: This book is a study of the Johannine Christian response to the fall of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 ce. A crucial text in this investigation is Jn 2.13-22 and its context, which provide a lens through which other texts in John are viewed. Kerr's examination of the Temple festivals of Passover, Tabernacles, Dedication suggests that in Jesus fulfils and replaces these, while in the case of the Sabbath he effects a transformation. The overall conclusion is that the Johannine Jesus replaces and fulfils the Jerusalem Temple.

Book excerpt: This study examines John's portrayal of Jesus as the fulfillment and replacement of the Temple. It also shows how a traditional conception of typology can be helpful for understanding the nature of the relationship between Jesus and the Temple. Interpreters often associate John 1:14, 1:51, 2:18-22, and 4:20-24 with Jesus' replacement of the Temple. Based on these texts, one can already begin to see that he fulfills and replaces the Temple in that he is the new locus of God's presence, glory, revelation, and abundant provision for his people. In particular, John 2:18-22 clearly associates Jesus' role as the Temple with his death and resurrection. According to Isaiah, part of God's decisive action on behalf of his people, and for revealing himself to the nations, is the lifting up of the Temple above all other temples. In John, this expectation finds its fulfillment in Jesus. John's language of lifting up and glorification marks Jesus' death, resurrection, and exaltation as climactic events through which God lifts up and glorifies Jesus, the true Temple. Jesus' death, resurrection, and exaltation are also the means by which God provides for his people. Jesus offers his flesh and blood for the life of the world and sends the Spirit to enrich believers with the benefits of his sacrificial death. In doing so, he simultaneously fulfills prophecies and patterns associated with the Passover, Feast of Tabernacles, Feast of Dedication, and the Temple.

Book excerpt: Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Jesus specialists agree that the Temple incident led directly to Jesus' arrest, but the precise relationship between Jesus and the Temple's administration remains unclear. Jesus and the Temple examines this relationship, exploring the reinterpretation of Torah observance and traditional Temple practices that are widely considered central components of the early Jesus movement. Challenging a growing tendency in contemporary scholarship to assume that the earliest Christians had an almost uniformly positive view of the Temple's sacrificial system, Simon J. Joseph addresses the ambiguous, inconsistent, and contradictory views on sacrifice and the Temple in the New Testament. This volume fills a significant gap in the literature on sacrifice in Jewish Christianity. It introduces a new hypothesis positing Jesus' enactment of a program of radically nonviolent eschatological restoration, an orientation that produced Jesus' conflicts with his contemporaries and inspired the first attributions of sacrificial language to his death.

Book excerpt: The Temple Pamphlet includes full-color pictures and diagrams of the First Temple (Solomon's Temple) and the Second Temple (New Testament Temple) in Jerusalem. The Temple Pamphlet is an amazing full-color booklet with hundreds of facts about the Temple. In the First Temple picture, each of the furnishings are identified. In the Second Temple diagram, you can see King Herod's expansion of the New Testament Temple with the massive courts that were added before Jesus' birth. These were the courts where Jesus taught and prayed. The Temple Pamphlet tells the 1000-year history of the Temple in Jerusalem. King David gathered gold and silver for the First Temple's construction, but his son King Solomon built the Temple on Mt. Zion. After the destruction of the Temple in 586 BC a Second Temple was built on the same site in 516 BC by Zerubbabel. Then just before Jesus' birth King Herod expanded the Temple Mount and enlarged the entire Second Temple complex. The Jewish Temple was destroyed in AD 70 by the Romans, but the Temple Mount remains. The First Temple Diagram: Key Features A beautiful cutaway illustration of the first temple, Solomon's Temple, shows what the Temple may have looked like inside and out. The Ark of the Covenant The Mercy Seat The Brazen Altar The Sea (The Bronze Basin) Sacrifice / the Brazen Altar (Bronze Altar) The Sea (Bronze Basin) Brass Pillars (Bronze Pillars) Golden Lampstand (Golden Candlestick) and Table of Showbread Golden Incense Altar The Veil Cherubim The Holy Place and the Holy of Holies ...and more The Second Temple Diagram: Shows the Expanded Courts Detailed Bird's Eye View of the Second Temple, Also Known as Herod's Temple or the New Testament Temple The Court of the Gentiles The Court of the Women The Israel Court The Priest's Court The Temple pamphlet has a detailed and colorful diagram of the Jewish Temple drawn to scale based on measurements from the Bible. Each of the Temple furnishings are explained in detail, as well as their functions, purposes, and the meanings they have for believers today. The Temple Pamphlet also has a question-and-answer section filled with fascinating facts about the biblical Temple. The physical pamphlet version is 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches folded, which fits in most Bibles; it unfolds to 33 inches long. The e-book and/or digital versions can be scrolled or zoomed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasp the Majesty, Beauty, and Significance of God's Dwelling Places At various points in Israel's history, God dwelt in specific, significant places, most notably in the tabernacle and the temple. These structures, meticulously planned, extravagantly furnished, and regularly frequented by the devout, were more than just places of worship and sacrifice. They were pictures of God's relationship with his chosen people and of the atoning work that would be done by the Messiah. To understand the tabernacle and the temple, then, is to understand how we are brought into God's family through the sacrifice of his only Son, Jesus. Visually stunning and theologically rich, this full-color resource brings together the latest scholarship and archeological discoveries to bring God's dwelling places alive for modern believers. It places these important structures in their historical and theological contexts, connects them with the overall biblical story, and shows how they bring meaning and depth to the faith of Christians today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture tells us that the words of Jesus made people uncomfortable, confused, angry, repentant, worshipful, and riotous. Today, we read the words of Christ in a steady, even tone and find ourselves wondering if maybe we're missing something. Could it be that we've lost the emotional power of Jesus's words simply because we're too familiar with them? With incredible insight into the surprising and unsettling aspects of Jesus's parables and life, Matt Mikalatos reimagines familiar stories and parables in a modern-day setting, bringing alive for the contemporary reader all the controversy and conflict inherent in the originals. These emotional, sometimes humorous, and jaw-dropping retellings include the stories of the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the lost coin, the feeding of the 5,000, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and more, asking provocative questions like What would be the modern equivalent of Jesus letting a "sinful woman" wash his feet? Who would be the hero of "The Good Samaritan"? How would Jesus tell the parable of the lost sheep in a city like Portland?
