Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Production of Honeybees in Winter In considering the circumstances on this last day-of the experi ment with bees it is interesting to recall observations made in the study Of the effect Of ventilation on men, that the sensations produced by bad 7air are not experienced when the air is stirred. If this indicates an actual cliflerence in physiological conditions in the di mer ent circumstances, then it is not inconceivable that something analo gous to this was true Of the bees on this day. The stirring Of the air when the circulation was resumed may have served to remove some cause Of depression that was e mective when the circulation was stopped.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overwintering of Honey Bee Colonies Strong colonies will usually consume considerably more honey over winter than weak colonies. However, such strong colonies will usually replace most of the honey used during the winter with new honey from willow, dandelion, fruit bloom, and other early blooming sources, under the same conditions that under-developed colonies continue to lose weight or show little or no gain. The strong colony that has a large population of young bees by mid-april not only shows a smaller net loss of reserve stores at the beginning of the surplus flow in june than a subnormal colony, but also is stronger and more capable of produc ing a large surplus crop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hive Bee: A Manual of Beekeeping for Hawaii The hive bee is a familiar example of an insect under domestication. The history of its domestication is lost in antiquity; for the art of bee culture has been known since the earliest times. In the wild state bees range the woods, nesting in hollow trees, in crevices in rocks or in any place that will afford them protection, often in the most inaccessible places. Searching for these nests in order to plunder their stores of honey constitutes a favorite pastime in the countryside. This method of procuring the bees products, however, is wasteful and uncertain. The bee has small place in human economy until its cultivation as a domestic animal insures a lively and continued interest. Under domestication the bee has received considerable attention. Its cultivation among the historical peoples dwelling on the shores of the Mediterranean has led to the recognition of well-marked races, from different characteristics of size, color, behavior, etc., and some improvement in quality of the different races has been made through the application of well known principles of breeding. As a domestic animal also it has been carried with the stream of human migration to practically all parts of the earth. The German or black race of bees was the one commonly propagated by the early beekeepers and received a wide distribution; but more recently the superiority of the Italian or golden race has become recognized and it is now largely replacing the German bee. The early spread of the black bee is deplored by many beekeepers on account of the trouble it gives when they attempt to maintain pure breeds of the golden races. The principal characteristics of the Italian bee are its high color, great energy and peculiar gentleness. Hall, Colo, Story County: After trying every plan have decided that for Iowa conditions cellar wintering is best. Of equal numbers wintered in cellar and packed outside losses have been several times greater in outdoor wintered colonies. (sioux County). In Story county lost only one colony in 356 wintered in the cellar. In one cel lar which was too warm losses were heavier. When bees are in right condition they will winter in almost any hole in the ground. No ap parent differences in results whether t0ps and bottoms are left on, or removed. W. S. Pangburn, Center Junction, Jones County: A seven-eighth inch entrance is used winter and summer. The bees are tiered up five high in cellar with front of hive one inch lower than back. The door is frequently opened at night to let in fresh air. Temperature is not so important as proper ventilation and a dry cellar. The results of win tering are frequently perfect, but have had some losses when honey dew was mixed with the stores. Spring dwindling is caused by putting the bees out too early. Plenty of stores for early brood rear ing are important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Answers to Beekeeping Questions The remedy is not difficult to imagine. If possible, let the hive be in a cool, shady place. A temporary shade, and Sprinkling with water will serve a good turn. Give plenty of chance for air. Some practice leaving the covers of the hives raised an inch or so for two or three-days. Some give two stories to the swarm, taking away the lower story after two or three days. Either of these plans provides to some extent against an overheated dwell ing. Some practice giving a frame of brood to the swarm, with the idea that the bees will feel that they cannot afford to abandon so valuable a piece of property. In any case, if all laying queens are clipped no prime swarm can abscond unless it joins, or is joined, by some other swarm having a queen with whole wings. The queen with clipped wing may be lost, but it is better to lose the queen alone than to lose both queen and swarm. Swarms may abscond, also, if they are secondary or after swarms and the queen has not mated. When she goes out for her wedding flight, the swarm may follow her. We must, when we work with bees, follow where they lead if we want satisfactory results. They generally know what they want and fight to do it in their own way. The bee is an economical fellow. Efficiency is his last name. For ages before our time he has been working at the same task that he has brought to such perfection. The bees that have excited the amazement and wonder of the world as build ers of geometric comb, with all its economy and strength, the bees that make from the nectar of the flowers the honey, that is the superlative of all things sweet and good; have not stopped with these two achievements, but have maintained a marvel with in their home, which, when understood, will amaze us more than ever. The bees collect propolis (despised by the beekeeper) and with infinite work and a knowledge of the laws of condensation of moisture, have varnished the inside, sealed all openings that would give upper ventilation, making out of their home a perfect condenser for the water vapor that has filled the hive air by evaporation from the nectar. This moisture they collect from the inside surface of the hive, works right in with their idea of econ omy, saving the carrying of water from the stream or spring. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location.
