Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Problem and Social Reform The new evidence, it will be seen, includes maps of six Prohibition towns, including the three largest towns in Maine and the two largest towns in New Hampshire, showing in each case the number, position, and character of the places where drink is regularly on sale, while typical photographs of the exteriors and interiors Of the saloons are also supplied. If, as the present writers believe, the evidence now given is decisive as to the non-existence of Prohibition, apart from the Statute book, in the urban centres Of the Prohibition States investigated, a question Of great interest arises as to the real significance Of the fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Temperance Reform in Massachusetts, 1813-1883 From boyhood we have been interested in the temperance movement, and have also been connected with different organizations of temperance workers. As the history of this reform has been closelv identified with the history of the State, for three-fourths of a cen tury, we have sought to rescue from oblivion a record of the noble work that has been done by the earnest men and women, who have enlisted in this holy war against the gigantic crime of crimes, the liquor traffic. For some years, in the relaxation from other duties we have gathered the materials here brought together. We have culled from a wide field, including the written or printed records-and reports of the principal societies, the statements of prominent members, and the files of temperance and other papers. We have not referred to all our sources of information, because it would too much encumber the pages with notes. We have endeavored to be accurate in our statements. Yet we cannot vouch for their reliability in all cases, especially of names, as many of them have been taken from news papers.. Where we have had no trustworthy records. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bases of the Temperance Reform: An Exposition and Appeal The design Of this work is to set forth, with clearness and succinctness, the principal grounds Of the Temperance Reform, with the hope that, by securing the reader's enlightened assent, a stronger public sentiment may be called forth against all the causes - personal, social, and legalized - Of Intemperance. There are many opponents who, if better informed, would be converted into friends. There are many inquirers to whom an Essay like the present will be acceptable, as furnish ing, within a brief compass, answers to ques tions by which they have been perplexed. There are also many personal abstainers, who, having become such from benevolent impulse, will be confirmed in their course by an ac quaintance with the argumentative bases Of the Temperance system. The mission Of this work is in the highest degree practical, since nothing can be more eminently practical than the promotion Of per feet and universal sobriety - 011e Of the most important Of all conceivable ends in reference to the material and moral interests Of mankind. How this end can be reached most surely and speedily, is a subject Of transcendent and ur gent moment; and the writer makes his confi dent appeal to those who are prepared to con duct this inquiry in a candid spirit, and to carry into effect, faithfully and resolutely, the line Of action best contributive to the highest good Of the individual and Of society at large. Book excerpt: Given the current concerns about binge drinking, the national alcohol strategy, and the new Licensing Act, alcohol issues are high on the policy and public agendas. However, the history in this debate is relatively under-exploited and the historical role of temperance rarely drawn upon. This timely report looks back at the role of temperance and considers how the lessons learned and the principles of the Temperance Movement can be applied to alcohol use in today's society. It draws on existing literature about temperance and reviews how the models it offered can be brought into present day thinking and debate. The report also examines whether abstinence changes personal behaviour, and and how it corresponds with structural factors, such as licensing and taxation, as well as environmental improvement. Whilst the nineteenth century mass movement of temperance cannot be recreated in the same way today as it was in Victorian Britain, the author argues that it does present models for current strategies and can lead to discussion of how to achieve cultural change in mass society. Temperance outlines how the legacy of temperance has been expressed in recent decades and how this may be built upon today, raising issues for current policy making.
