Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Poetry, in the High School There has lately been much criticism of the teaching of literature in the high school. It has been suggested, by those who have attempted to measure school work by its effect upon later life, that recent generations of high-school students have not gained all that they should from this study. They point out that we have been led to expect that twelve years of school contact with the best literature would establish an abiding interest in good reading; but we have found that high-school graduates, once they enter upon their life-work, give a surprisingly small part of: their leisure time to reading of any sort, and still less to reading the world's best literature. It may be that this unsatisfactory result is not altogether new; that the school, without being aware of the fact, has always partially failed in its teaching of literary content. The boys and girls of the Latin schools and academies of the past years represented a highly selected population. As compared with the high-school students of to-day, they came of a favored cultured class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Teaching of Poetry Spend many more. I think, at times, of Shaw's epigram: Those who can, do: those who cannot, teach. If we could write poetry no doubt we would do so, and leave the teaching to others. If we only love poetry, but cannot write it, then we teach. Yes, but teaching is also doing, and it is because I have felt that in teaching poetry I was, in the fullest sense, doing, that I have found it so satisfying. Life's inadequate to joy, as the soul sees joy, says Cleon. Teach a poem, as it should be taught, and see the flash in your pupils' eyes as the living beauty of the poem goes home to their hearts, and you will find that life is adequate to joy. Certainly, at the end Of a lesson on poetry, Shaw's epigram has seemed to me merely a clever futility. He never knew the teacher's joy in doing. But there is another reason for beginning with poetry. If I had to test a teacher of English by his work in any one branch of the subject I would choose this. It is the highest work he has to do, that which demands most of him. If he can teach poetry he can teach any other department of the subject if he will; but he may teach other departments Of the subject Well and fail with poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the High School, And, What to Teach in Poetry The fourth aim suggested is to develop in the pupil a fuller appreciation of good literature and increasing appreciation of the fullness of life. This aim is frequently lost sight of by the teacher of composition. To be sure, it can not be measured as easily as the three aims just considered. But if composi tion is taught successfully the pupil will appreciate more fully the great masterpieces, and he will see new meaning in life and in external nature. The mere fact that he can construct a good sentence or paragraph will help him to value aright the sentence and paragraph structure of Macaulay and Stevenson. So also a description of a character from life or of some phase of external nature, and the narration of events that happen every day, will increase his interest in the world in which he lives. Writing about things gives one a fuller realization and appreciation of the things themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Poetry in the Grades The book is designed not only to meet the needs of grade and rural school teachers but also to be used as a text in methods classes in Reading. Here, we believe, the best results can be secured not by the mere study of the model lessons but by the actual use of the lessons in class. One student may take the part of teacher and the others imagine themselves pupils in one of the eight grades and respond accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Poetry Book The inspiration and delight derived from familiarity with the best poetry may be regarded as among the most precious results of education. Children should be made to understand that school training is but the preparation for the broader education and culture which it is their duty, and should be their pleasure, to acquire for themselves; and to this end it is essential that they be so taught that after leaving school they may look not to the newspaper and the last novel for their ideals, but to the high and worthy thoughts of the English classics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As teachers today, everything we teach has to be turbo-charged with skills and the promise of advancing our students academically. Here's the cool thing: poetry can get you there. It is inherently turbo-charged. Poets distill a novel's worth of content and emotion in twenty lines. The literary elements and devices you need to teach are all there, powerful and miniature as a Bonsai tree." -Paul B. Janeczko You'd like to teach poetry with confidence and passion, but let's face it: poetry can be intimidating to both you and your students. Here is the book that takes the fear factor out of poetry and shows you how to use this powerful genre to spark student engagement and meet language arts requirements. Award-winning poet Paul B. Janeczko is the master for creating anthologies for pre-teen and adolescent readers, and here he's chosen 20 contemporary and classic selections with step-by-step, detailed lessons for investigating each poem from the inside out. Kids learn to become active readers of poetry, using graphic organizer worksheets to help them jump over their fear and dive into personal, smart, analytical responses. There's no better genre than poetry for helping students gain perspective on their own identities and their own worlds, and Paul provides a space on each reproducible poem for private thoughts, questions, feelings, and ideas. Your students will discover what each poem means to them. The 20 poems in this collection were chosen for their thought-provoking topics; compelling real-world themes that lead to conversation and collaboration in middle school classrooms. And by showing you how the poems and activities address the common core standards for English Language Arts (complete with a sample chart linking the poems to the standards), Paul provides a clear understanding of how you can "get there" using poetry. You can cultivate a passion for poetry in your classroom. Take the journey with Paul B. Janeczko and grow in confidence with your students, meeting some standards along the way.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English Literature in Secondary Schools This little book was originally projected by Mr. A. C. Guthkelch, of King's College, and was to be written by us in common. The pressure of other work prevented him from carrying out his share of the undertaking, and, at the request of the publishers, I took up the work alone. For the plan of the book I am mainly, and for the execution entirely, responsible. Mr. Guthkelch's originality and accurate scholarship would have produced a very different kind of book, and the chapters which follow can have little or nothing to offer to the trained teacher of literature; but there are many who, without special training, have to teach literature as a subsidiary subject, and to them these hints and suggestions of method may be useful. My aim has been practical guidance, rather than originality. Doubtless the results of my own reading will be found imbedded in what I have here written, and for this I need make no apology; I have not, however, consulted for this present purpose, nor consciously drawn upon any books of reference or histories of literature.
