Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Grammar of the Latin Language: With a Series of Latin and English Exercises for Translation and a Collection of Latin Reading Lessons, With the Requisite Vocabularies The book is constructed upon the principle of putting every thing into practice as fast as acquired. Every grammatical form or principle of syntax, as soon as learned, is to be ren dered practical and fixed in the mind, by translations first from the Latin into the English, and then from the English into the Latin. To prepare the pupil for these exercises in translation, such forms of the verb as are requisite for con structing the Simplest sentences are given at the outset, and a few simple rules of Syntax as they are required, while all along in connection with the exercises, lists of Latin words with their definitions are given to be committed to memory, most of which, also, are collected and arranged in alphabetical Vocabularies at the end of the book. As many of the examples for trans lation as possible, were selected unaltered from the classics, others were slightly altered to suit the cases for which they were employed, and the remainder composed by the author, yet always so as to embody classical ideas and turns of thought. The examples in English may be translated into Latin, either viva voce or by writing, at the discretion of the teacher. With regard to the mode of using the book the intelligent teacher will be the best judge. In some cases it will proba bly be found best to take the pupil over the first and perhaps the second Course, omitting the English exercises at first, and then return and take them up in connection with a thorough review of the whole. Perhaps, also, a judicious teacher, fol lowing out the general principle of the book, of diminishing difficulties by division and distribution, will think best, with very young pupils in particular, to omit some other things the first time over and take them up at subsequent reviews. But whatever course is pursued in teaching the book, a complete mastery of all that it contains should be aimed at from the beginning, and should be actually attained before it is left. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While both the Latin Primer and the Shorter Latin primer are elementary compendiums this book 'The Public School Grammar' is a much higher work. Benjamin Hall Kennedy said this book was written simply as a development of the famous Latin Primers. In general principals, all Kennedy's books are the same but this book is three times as large with the subject matter being arranged more systematically. Examples have been increased and the illustrations are wider with a large amount of information added. A grammar of this size will set you on the path of becoming a Latin scholar. Kennedy's Latin books have acquired a firm place in English culture: They are not simply excellent textbooks on the Latin language but are symbols of what schoolchildren have endured and enjoyed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Even thought this famous book is being brought to you in a new edition it remains complete and includes extra material from Kennedy's other grammar books. These books provide clear and simple explanations of written and spoken Latin. Comprehensive and easy to use with coverage of all the key points of Latin grammar, the shorter primer is the ideal learning tool for the beginner in Latin. Intermediate students should use the second book Kennedy's Revised Latin Primer also published by Simon Wallenberg. While a third book, Kennedy's Public school grammar will also show you in greater detail, how the Latin language works. "For over a hundred years Kennedy's textbooks have been the unrivalled books for the teaching of the Latin language in public schools. The new Wallenberg edition will be welcomed by students and teachers alike." --- Telegraph Online Newspaper
