Book excerpt: Interest in the problems of underdeveloped economies has increased since the early 1950s, and is now a primary topic in university courses. When this book was originally published, it reflected a sense among some economists that current, orthodox economic theory is inadequate in this field. The volume includes leading American and non-American economists. The discussion of the content of courses was, in the nature of things, an extension of the discussion on the state of knowledge and reflects the period immediately prior to initial publication. Some of the issues continue to be debated, including the balance of instruction between macro- and micro-economics, the place of mathematics and econometrics, the question of the desirability of linking the study of economics with studies in administration, languages, political science, sociology or even engineering.Development economics is now an established subject in the teaching curricula of most universities. The attention of the volume is focused on the problems of creating courses of study in subjects relevant to development within some framework specially designed for the purpose. The problems of organizing such courses concerned the length of courses, the type of students to which they would cater, the qualifications and standards required for admission and successful completion of courses, and so on.The balance of instruction between macro- and micro-economics, the place of mathematics and econometrics, the question of the desirability of linking the study of economics with studies in administration, languages (in connection with area studies), political science, sociology or even engineering, the merits of methods like case studies, workshops and training in field work, are all discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous, pathbreaking analysis demonstrating that a country's prosperity is directly related in the long run to the skills of its population. In this book Eric Hanushek and Ludger Woessmann make a simple, central claim, developed with rigorous theoretical and empirical support: knowledge is the key to a country's development. Of course, every country acknowledges the importance of developing human capital, but Hanushek and Woessmann argue that message has become distorted, with politicians and researchers concentrating not on valued skills but on proxies for them. The common focus is on school attainment, although time in school provides a very misleading picture of how skills enter into development. Hanushek and Woessmann contend that the cognitive skills of the population—which they term the “knowledge capital” of a nation—are essential to long-run prosperity. Hanushek and Woessmann subject their hypotheses about the relationship between cognitive skills (as consistently measured by international student assessments) and economic growth to a series of tests, including alternate specifications, different subsets of countries, and econometric analysis of causal interpretations. They find that their main results are remarkably robust, and equally applicable to developing and developed countries. They demonstrate, for example, that the “Latin American growth puzzle” and the “East Asian miracle” can be explained by these regions' knowledge capital. Turning to the policy implications of their argument, they call for an education system that develops effective accountability, promotes choice and competition, and provides direct rewards for good performance.

In this volume, leading scholars are brought together to illuminate this tradition, with particular emphasis on the question of growth and development. Divided into two parts, this collection offers a blend of papers of history of economic thought and development economics, and suggests that classical political economy - that strand of thought which goes from Physiocracy to Smith and to Ricardo and Marx - has a precise vision and indeed a precise model of long term development. This book: examines the influence that has been exerted by both pre-classical and classical thought on modern day development economics provides a synthetic analysis of the classical vision of growth and development from the mercantilist era to physiocracy examines Adam Smith’s contribution to growth theory explores Marxian thinking and ideas, and the political developments that gave rise to state functions in post-war theory. Including contributions by well known authors such as Eltis, Murphy and Kurz, this significant volume by one of the premier historians of economic thought will be a valuable resource for postgraduates and professionals in the fields of economic history and political economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the rise and especially the demise of diverse revolutionary heterodox traditions in Cambridge theoretical and applied economics, investigating both the impact of internal pressures within the faculty as also the power of external ideological and political forces unleashed by the global dominance of neoliberalism. Using fresh archival materials, personal interviews and recollections, this meticulously researched narrative constructs the untold story of the eclipse of these heterodox and post-Keynesian intellectual traditions rooted and nurtured in Cambridge since the 1920s, and the rise to power of orthodox, mainstream economics. Also expunged in this neoclassical counter-revolution were the structural and radical policy-oriented macro-economic modelling teams of the iconic Department of Applied Economics, along with the atrophy of sociology, development and economic history from teaching and research in the self-purifying faculty. This book will be of particular interest to researchers in the history of economic thought, sociology of knowledge, political economy, especially those engaged in heterodox and post-Keynesian economics, and to everyone wishing to make economics fit for purpose again for negotiating the multiple economic, social and environmental crises rampant at national and global levels.

Book excerpt: This book is written as a tribute to Frederick Nixson’s extensive work on industrial development in the Global South, while seeking to actively engage with the latest arguments concerning development economics, together with changes in manufacturing and industrial policy that continue to shape the role of the Global South in the international economy, the impact of the increased concentration of global multinational corporations in that space, along with the rise of new financing tools and debt traps. The chapters pay homage to Fred’s broad view of the international development process and reflect his breadth of perception both theoretically and geographically. The book targets both the scholarly and policymaking audience.
