This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Teaching of Chemistry in the Secondary Schools of the United States Previous to 1850 No less authority than Foster Watson is sponsor for the state ment that the history of the study of Latin is the history of secondary education well into the nineteenth century. We have long known in a general way, at least, the factors which delayed the introduction of the natural sciences, but we have been sadly lacking in information as to when and how the natural sciences began their invasion of the curriculum. Mr. Powers has made a valuable contribution not only to the history of the teaching of chemistry, but to the general history of education. He has presented in a clear and interesting manner the many factors which brought chemistry into the foreground of social and intellect'ual interests and finally secured for it a place in the schools. In addition to the valuable data which his painstaking efforts have brought together, he has made clear the sequence of forces which are universally at work in bringing about changes in school curricula, - namely, new social and industrial needs; quests for new knowledge to meet these needs; rise of a new science (in this case, chemistry); efforts to gain for the new science a place in the schools; establishment of a new study; sub sequent formalism and devitalization; efforts to rehumanize or revitalize the now thoroughly established and thoroughly re spectable study, by teaching it in close relation to such concrete problems as originally led to its introduction. From this sum mary statement it is evident that Mr. Powers' study, though treating only one school subject and that for a comparatively brief period, will provide students of the history of education and students of secondary education not only with an explanation of many conditions and factors in the present educational situation, but also with the basis of an illuminating chapter in educational and social philosophy. Book Synopsis Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage (Classic Reprint) by : R. A. Gregory
Download or read book Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage (Classic Reprint) written by R. A. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. Download or read book Elementary Physics and Chemistry written by Richard Arman Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry and Its Uses: A Textbook for Secondary Schools Throughout the text a great many items of interesting in formation as well as supplementary explanation have been thrown into subordinate type. It is believed that the matter in large type is complete in itself and nowhere dependent on the subordinate paragraphs. However, it is thought that so much of interest will be found in these paragraphs that the teacher can easily induce the student to read them even if they are regarded as excess material. Directions for laboratory work will be found in a separate volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: Third Stage This book is the last of three little volumes containing a course of elementary Physics and Chemistry based upon a syllabus of work approved several years ago by the Board of Education as suitable for the upper standards of elementary schools. The object of the instruction prescribed is not so much to convey information as to develop a scientific habit of thinking in the pupils, and it is in sympathy with this spirit that the books have been prepared. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things; for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. Book Synopsis Physical Chemistry for Schools (Classic Reprint) by : Henry John Horstman Fenton
Download or read book Physical Chemistry for Schools (Classic Reprint) written by Henry John Horstman Fenton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry for Schools This little book is intended to serve as a brief introductory outline of Physical Chemistry for the use of students who have been through the very elementary courses of descriptive Chemistry and Physics. The subject-matter is given, as far as possible, in the form of concise, direct statements; long detailed explanations, historical introductions and mathematical formulae being avoided as far as possible. It is hoped that by introducing the subject in this way it may be possible to fix the attention and to stimulate interest in the case of many students who, as experience shows, are liable to be scared away from the subject when it is presented in the more elaborate and mathematical form. It will be understood, of course, that in the study of Physical Chemistry many important problems and theories occur which are, perhaps, beyond the capabilities of elementary students. Matters of this kind have been only briefly sketched and are given in sections printed in smaller type, so that they can be used at the discretion of the teacher. The author desires to express his sincere thanks to Mr W. H. Mills, M.A., Ph.D., for his kindness in reading the proof-sheets and in making many useful suggestions; and to Dr Shillington Scales for executing the diagrams. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Studies in Chemistry Chemistry has had a varied history in its comparatively short career as an educational factor; but it has never yet' commanded universal respect, nor has it, I think, ever been authoritatively recognized as equal in educational value to Greek, Latin, and mathematics - the standards by which, whether we like it or not, all educational subjects have been measured in the past and will be measured for some time to come. The beneficial effects of chemistry as an element of variety, or as a sort of counter-irritant, have always been recognized; but this is not the same thing as according it educational value. When all is said and done, teachers and students alike recognize the fact that a year's work in chemistry as given in the average secondary school stands for a decidedly smaller outlay of energy than a year of Greek, Latin, or mathematics, and the feeling is a perfectly natural and logical one that the results measured in terms of mental discipline vary in about the same ratio.
