Book excerpt: This is one of a thousand stories dealing with the transition from innocence to a maturity stage where unforeseen events forced this change to occur sooner and faster than expected. The death of a father forcing an older brother to become the strong figure in a family, the absence of both parents often causes the same circumstances. In my case it was a sudden change in government brought by a revolution and followed by family separation in exile at an early age. I have often heard so many similar stories from older Jewish friends about the fragmentation of families during the Nazi era. The name changes to save a life, the denials of ethnicity and religion in order to survive. The quest for God's given freedom does not know ethnic background or frontiers. My story is no different from those who have risked everything to live in a free society. We often associate these stories with Nazi Germany, Communist China or the old Soviet Union. It's hard to conceive, yet a reality that the same circumstances could happen just ninety miles from our shores in a country that was always ( and I believe still is) traditionally and culturally strongly linked to the United States. I write this book with dual purpose. One is to pour my heart out and leave a written legacy on my experience to my children. As much as a father tries to explain verbally, time tends to erase the memories. The second purpose is to serve as an inspiration to all those who today seek freedom. Every human being should have freedom to worship, freedom to speak their minds and express their opinions, freedom to travel, freedom to prosper in abundance and decide who their elected leaders will be through free elections. These freedoms still do no exist in Cuba today. In spite of some recent cosmetic changes and Castro's mummified state, his younger brother is still preaching the same lies designed to create an illusion of change. After more than fifty years of totalitarian government, the Castro brothers along with their puppets in Venezuela and Panama still rule like old dinosaurs from a bygone era.

Book excerpt: Seasoned Traveller, Dominic Reeve, writer of many acclaimed books on the Travellers' way of life - as it is, not romanticised - here tells us of the period when Travellers were more or less universally changing from the horse drawn waggon to the age of the lorry and trailer (caravan). The book has the added interest of giving us a glimpse into the private life of the great painter and Romani Rai, Augustus John, of whom the author was a friend. Reeves' wife Beshlie - who illustrates this book - was a frequent (and the last) model for the renowned painter.

Book excerpt: The book Back and Forth Forever; A Biography is an inciteful treatise on the life and experiences of Stephen Clements that portrays the individual in his Bildungsroman and formative development as a worthy cynosure of interest and admiration. He had lived in an unorthodox and Bohemian lifestyle as he progressed into a genuine and complete boulevardier and dilettante. Primordially disadvantaged, he did overcome debilitating and obtrusive obstacles that enabled him an exponentially and compensatory advantage as he dealt with his conflicts and inherit deficits by overachieving. His experiences are for the most part idiopathic as he has a vast knowledge and inner drive to pursue high ideals and a propensity for the unconventional. He strives for recognition and appreciation that he was ill-afforded.

Book excerpt: From the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning poet: an extraordinary memoir and blistering meditation on fatherhood, race, addiction, and ambition. Gregory Pardlo's father was a brilliant and charismatic man--a leading labor organizer who presided over a happy suburban family of four. But when he loses his job following the famous air traffic controllers' strike of 1981, he succumbs to addiction and exhausts the family's money on more and more ostentatious whims. In the face of this troubling model and disillusioned presence in the household, young Gregory rebels. Struggling to distinguish himself on his own terms, he hustles off to Marine Corps boot camp. He moves across the world, returning to the United States only to take a job as a manager-cum-barfly at his family's jazz club. Air Traffic follows Gregory as he builds a life that honors his history without allowing it to define his future. Slowly, he embraces the challenges of being a poet, a son, and a father as he enters recovery for alcoholism and tends to his family. In this memoir, written in lyrical and sparkling prose, Gregory tries to free himself from the overwhelming expectations of race and class, and from the tempting yet ruinous legacy of American masculinity. Air Traffic is a richly realized, deeply felt ode to one man's remarkable father, to fatherhood, and to the frustrating yet redemptive ties of family. It is also a scrupulous, searing examination of how manhood can be fashioned in our cultural landscape.

With half a dozen or more loup garouappearing every full moon, mysterious shadow demons, houdoun necromancers, fifty-foot bipedal crocodiles showing up every couple of months and more vampires than a Goth concert, New Orleans in the '80s gives a whole new perspective to the term “Hell on Earth.” In fact, more monsters are popping up than crawfish at a fais do do! Book excerpt: A Vintage Shorts Selection • Almost three decades ago, iconic and incomparable American essayist Joan Didion’s now-classic report from the Dukakis campaign trail exposed, in no uncertain terms, the complete sham that is the modern American presidential run. Writing with bite and some humor too, Didion betrays “the process”—the way in which power is exchanged and the status quo is maintained. All insiders—politicians, journalists, spin doctors—participate in a political narrative that is “designed as it is to maintain the illusion of consensus by obscuring rather than addressing actual issues.” The optics of presidential campaigns have grown ever more farcical and remote from the needs and issues most relevant to Americans’ lives, and Didion’s elegant, shrewd, and prescient commentary has never been more urgent than it is right now. An ebook short.

Here is a story of the humour and tragedy that touched the daily lives of the officers and enlisted men of the R.A.F. during that time. It is a valuable link to an era long past and a part of aviation that no longer exists outside of aviation museums. Here, also, is a story about early aircraft operations; about flying in zero visibility, sometimes in formation with other aircraft, before the advent of instrument flight regulations. It gives us a taste of the risks those aviators took and the judgement they needed to survive. This book is a must for aviation buffs. Within its pages, flight instructors will discover the origins of their trade. Terry Finney's story is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of aviation.

Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
