Book excerpt: in Ukrainian fields and forests in the 1940s and 1950s, but what makes any successful popular insurgency work, whether it takes place in America in 1776 or in troubled parts of the world today. History aside, Roman Mac's story is also a moving human document. There is tragedy, heartbreak and heroic endurance here, both witnessed and lived. And Roman depicts it all in modest, straightforward style not only the great struggle that was going on around him, but also the struggle that was going on within himself. We see and feel the rustic joys and travails of village life, the destruction and loss that war, Nazism and Communism bring upon it, and we, too, struggle along the "winding path to freedom" with a young boy who manages to keep his faith, his humanity and not the least of accomplishments amidst so much suffering and sorrow his sense of humor through it all. Although I was already familiar with Ukrainian history and, as an aide to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, was 2 ROMAN D. MAC an eye witness to the last chapters of the Cold War, reading Roman Mac's story made me understand more fully what that colossal struggle was really like for the ordinary people who bore the brunt of it. His gift of making us see it all as he saw it then, through a young boy's eyes, brings alive both the brutality of battle and magic, solitary moments in the still forest with only woodland creatures as companions. We feel the pelting snow and piercing cold, we smell the smoke of the campfires, and we hear both the whiz of bullets and the deep, moving chords of the freedom fighters'songs, just as the young Roman Mac did more than half a century ago. Then, with the battle over, we follow a troubled but determined young man on the road to a new life in the west. We share the ups and downs of a new series of trials and tests from which he emerges once again with his humanity and his humor intact. By book's end, we feel as if we've walked beside him all the way, and we, too, experience his joy in achieving success, dignity and a happy family life in America. Thank you, Roman Mac, for sharing and showing us so much, and for doing it with such clarity, honesty and goodness of heart.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the divide that exists between the reality of finance and the image it projects. A functioning financial system is an essential feature of a modern economy, providing it with money, credit, capital, and investments. Conversely, those who provide this essential service are neither respected nor trusted. The causes and consequences of this divide is explored using the British experience from 1800 to the present, drawing upon a mixture of factual evidence and contemporary fiction. Nothing of this scale has been attempted before and this is the product of 50 years of research.

Book excerpt: “This is an exemplary reference book sure to lead readers to gems of mystery and detective fiction.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review This book tells the story of crime fiction published during the first half of the twentieth century. The diversity of this much-loved genre is breathtaking, and so much greater than many critics have suggested. To illustrate this, the leading expert on classic crime discusses one hundred books ranging from The Hound of the Baskervilles to Strangers on a Train which highlight the entertaining plots, the literary achievements, and the social significance of vintage crime fiction. This book serves as a companion to the acclaimed British Library Crime Classics series but it tells a very diverse story. It presents the development of crime fiction—from Sherlock Holmes to the end of the golden age—in an accessible, informative and engaging style. Readers who enjoy classic crime will make fascinating discoveries and learn about forgotten gems as well as bestselling authors. Even the most widely read connoisseurs will find books (and trivia) with which they are unfamiliar—as well as unexpected choices to debate. Classic crime is a richly varied and deeply pleasurable genre that is enjoying a world-wide renaissance as dozens of neglected novels and stories are resurrected for modern readers to enjoy. The overriding aim of this book is to provide a launch point that enables readers to embark on their own voyages of discovery.

Book excerpt: In the electrifying tradition of Minette Walters and Ruth Rendell, J. M. Morris savagely plumbs the depths of psychological terror in an uncompromising and brutally brilliant suspense debut. The Lonely Places etches a fiendishly compelling portrait of madness and menace, eroticism and terror, that pits a woman’s mind against a world where nothing is as it seems. THE LONELY PLACES “Then along came a spider Who sat down beside her...” Ruth Gemmill is broken. All she has known, all she has loved, all she has ever desired, have laid her waste. As autumn’s shadows begin to seep through her London home, Ruth escapes to the fading twilight of northern England in a last, desperate attempt to stave off the encroaching darkness. She needs the consolation of her brother, Alex: a man she cannot breathe without. It’s not the first time. She couldn’t breathe without Matt either. Matt, who used to beat her. Matt, who loved to hurt her. Matt, whom she loved with a masochistic passion that destroyed everything in its path. But Ruth moved on, reinvented herself. Ruth found the strength to escape the terrifying abuse of her domestic existence. Or so she would like to think. Little does she realize the extent of the crippling cobwebs her vicious lover has spun throughout her mind. But in the grim, foreboding town of Greenwell, where her brother now lives, fate deals Ruth another blow. For Alex has disappeared. To bring him safely home, she will be forced to confront her emotional demons through a bewildering landscape, where the phantoms of a menacing past lurk around every corner, wielding memories, determined to wake Ruth up to the most horrifying reality of all. Some webs can never be swept away, some spiders sting to destroy.... With chilling emotional precision and searing insight, J. M. Morris has created a novel that is at once devastatingly plausible, utterly poignant—and impossible to forget.

Book excerpt: While attending a Catholic conference in the US to boost the faith in difficult times, Australian political journalist and ex seminarian Jack Duggan is made aware of a controversial codex written by a 4th century Syrian bishop. Only photographs of the codex are available, the original having gone missing soon after its discovery at the Palestinian monastery of Mar Saba. Within a few pages we are engaged in Duggan’s struggle with his religious past, a past that furnished him with the expertise to translate the codex, but left him antagonistic to all things religious. From there we are carried into the thick of a story that reveals, step by step, what this ancient codex contains, and it contains not a few historical surprises. At once a kind of thriller, a romance and a slice of life, The Mar Saba Codex is a big story with many an unexpected twist that traverses the globe from Sydney to San Francisco, and from New York to Rome, reaching its grand climax in the old walled city of Jerusalem where equally belligerent forces strive for dominance.

What interested me as a writer was how we survived. What went on behind the scenes?... I went looking for my own fictional explanations for historical events... In Secret Kingdom, which takes place in Hungary in the dangerous summer months [of 1956] that led directly to the Revolution, I knew that the British ambassador's warnings of trouble building up had been ignored by the Foreign Office in London. Why? What were the consequences of such an extraordinary and irresponsible act?' Francis Bennett 'The Cold War here is not just a political but also a psychological landscape... In picking out a personal history from the greater tapestry unfolding in the background Bennett has produced a literary thriller of considerable merit.' The Times

The mark is Monroe Hall, a CEO who lavished more of his company's money on himself than the boys at Enron and WorldCom combined. The loot? A fleet of vintage automobiles that would leave the Sultan of Brunei blushing. The catch? Trying to outsmart a collection of angry union men who've been taken for a ride and blue-blooded suckers who've been taken for their family fortunes. But if Dortmunder and his merry band of crooks are to drive off with the loot, they'll have to act fast -- before they get caught in a deadly crossfire.

Book excerpt: “The most clever plot twist of the year.”—Washington Post “I nominate Kate Moore, the protagonist of Chris Pavone’s sizzling new thriller The Paris Diversion, for patron saint of working wives and mothers everywhere.”—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review “The Paris Diversion is the best espionage novel I’ve read this year. Smart, sophisticated and suspenseful, this is Pavone’s finest novel to date—and that’s saying something.”—Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fool Me Once “Deliciously twisty . . . This involving work has been skillfully engineered for maximum reader enjoyment.”—The Wall Street Journal From the New York Times bestselling author of The Expats. Kate Moore is back in a pulse-pounding thriller to discover that a massive terror attack across Paris is not what it seems—and that it involves her family American expat Kate Moore drops her kids at the international school, makes her rounds of chores, and meets her husband Dexter at their regular café: a leisurely start to a normal day, St-Germain-des-Prés. Across the Seine, tech CEO Hunter Forsyth stands on his balcony, wondering why his police escort just departed, and frustrated that his cell service has cut out; Hunter has important calls to make, not all of them technically legal. And on the nearby rue de Rivoli, Mahmoud Khalid climbs out of an electrician’s van and elbows his way into the crowded courtyard of the world’s largest museum. He sets down his metal briefcase, and removes his windbreaker. That’s when people start to scream. Everyone has big plans for the day. Dexter is going to make a small fortune, finally digging himself out of a deep financial hole, via an extremely risky investment. Hunter is going to make a huge fortune, with a major corporate acquisition that will send his company’s stock soaring. Kate has less ambitious plans: preparations for tonight’s dinner party—one of those homemaker obligations she still hasn’t embraced, even after a half-decade of this life—and an uneventful workday at the Paris Substation, the clandestine cadre of operatives that she’s been running, not entirely successfully, increasingly convinced that every day could be the last of her career. But every day is also a fresh chance to prove her own relevance, never more so than during today’s momentous events. And Mahmoud? He is planning to die today. And he won’t be the only one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jose Louzeiro's blunt rendering--a legacy of his years as a journalist--brings to the foreground the repetitive nature of Dito's life and obsessions. Louzeiro's rigorous focus on Dito's point of view alone makes the reader trace the decision-making process that gradually leads to Dito's criminalization. Sympathy for Dito is not asked. This is a story without heroes. Even in Dito's most heroic modeOCowhen he begins to carry the banner of revenge for his friend Pixote's deathOCoDito does not command praise. His courage is that of the desperate. Capable of bravery and of superhuman efforts, he stands either alone or with his street gang members as representative of millions of abandoned kids in Brazil and in the world. Childhood of the Dead was made into the internationally acclaimed motion picture: Pixote, the Law of the Weakest . It reflects the problem of street children in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Like Dito, they wash windshields at stoplights; they beg at restaurants for food; they peddle chewing gum and Kleenex packets; they pick pockets and snitch things from cars; they steal handbags and prey on tourists, just as they do in major cities in the U.S. from Los Angeles to Miami. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not Ready for Love is a collection of short stories which tries to tell what it can be like to be a child, a young person or a parent in Britain today. Some of the stories seek to expose the system that lets children down. Others touch on the remarkable resilience and compassion of children. Some look at the funny side of family life. Children who have experienced adversity can suffer the impact throughout their lives. But vulnerable children can triumph when given the care and support they need. Adopted and Looked After children have achieved high office in government, have become national poets and sporting heroes. And there are countless numbers who have become unsung heroes; turning out to be great parents themselves, or just being good people, getting on with their lives and making the world a better place. Extract from More Storage Space: 'It's your generation, actually; burning down the rainforests, global warming, extinction of the rhinos. Trump! Bolsanaro!' He looks up at them, the last two words summarising everything, he thinks. He hopes they'll see how obvious it is, though he's frustrated that he can't express himself more clearly. 'Bolsanaro? Which team does he play for?' asks Mike. Logan looks at the ceiling. From learning the moves: She looks at Spencer's dyed hair: bright red. 'Are you one of the entertainers?' she asks. 'Me? No, I'm hoping to be a dad one day,' says Spencer. 'Where's your wife?' 'No wife. Just me.' 'Just you?' Taylor looks puzzled. This isn't her idea of a family. From Gold: We advertised in the Big Issue. Not a sign. We got angry. How could she leave us worrying like this? We got frantic. Someone's taken her. She must be dead. It was a living nightmare. And friends and family had to know. How do you explain it? Their look seemed to say it was our fault; we must have done something. Our little Olivia who used to play her violin for them all as a party piece. Who'd won the school poetry prize. Weeks, months, a year... Ali Smith has written of one of the stories, The Gift, "I guarantee you will never forget... The Gift."
