Book excerpt: James stands alone, high on a Scottish hillside. He stares down at a massive, three-toed footprint...and the crushed animal within it. Is the creature that formed it responsible for James's father's sudden and unexplained disappearance?Isolated in his belief that something terrible has befallen his dad, James finally finds someone prepared to help him: Mendel - a wizard from another worldwho is trapped in the body of a goldfish. Mendel and James do a deal: James will help Mendel back to his own world - Denthan - before disaster befalls it; in return, Mendel will help James find his father. James and his best friend Craig are soon drawn into a dying world full of hideous monsters and a race of human-like creatures called Manimals. James comes to realise that Denthan can only be saved if he finds a magical talisman in time. But time is not something Denthan has. And he doesn't even know what he's looking for. And it's not only the inhabitants of this strange other world who are at risk. Unbeknownst to James, his mixed-up mother and half the village have followed them to Denthan. Can James find the Talisman in time? Is his father in Denthan too? And can he save a whole world and everyone he loves?

Particular attention is thus paid to laser diagnostics in medicine, interaction of laser radiation with biological tissue, and the development of new systems for these studies. The contributors to this volume cover such international research activities as photon migration in tissue, fibre optics, lasers in dermatology, ENT, cardiology, and in art conservation, imaging techniques in archaeology, laser technologies in contemporary art, and new laser and opto-electronic systems for biomedical and art-related studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated biography of the pioneering British artist and writer, tracing her life and work through the many places around the world where she lived The British-born artist and writer Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) is one of the vanguards in the history of women artists and the history of Surrealism. The interests of this visionary—feminism, ecology, the arcane and the mystical, the interconnectedness of everything—are now shared by many. Challenging the conventions of her time, Carrington abandoned family, society, and England to embrace new experiences and forge a unique artistic style in Europe and the Americas. In this evocative illustrated biography, writer and journalist Joanna Moorhead traces her cousin’s footsteps, exploring the artist’s life, loves, friendships, and work. Leading readers on a personal journey across Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and Mexico, Surreal Spaces describes the places and experiences that would become etched in Carrington’s memory and be echoed, sometimes decades later, in her art and writing—whether her grandmother’s kitchen with its giant stove; a remote Cornish hideaway where she holidayed with Max Ernst, Lee Miller, and Man Ray; the Left Bank of Paris; an asylum in Santander, Spain; New York, where she lived among other European exiles; or Mexico City, her final sanctuary. “Houses are really bodies,” Carrington wrote in her novella The Hearing Trumpet. “We connect ourselves with walls, roofs and objects just as we hang on to our livers, skeletons, flesh and blood streams.” Featuring photographs, drawings, and paintings of the spaces that so richly influenced Carrington’s work, Surreal Spaces is an intimate and vivid portrait of a fascinating artist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seers featured prominently in ancient Greek culture, but they rarely appear in archaic and classical colonial discourse. Margaret Foster exposes the ideological motivations behind this discrepancy and reveals how colonial discourse privileged the city’s founder and his dependence on Delphi, the colonial oracle par excellence, at the expense of the independent seer. Investigating a sequence of literary texts, Foster explores the tactics the Greeks devised both to leverage and suppress the extraordinary cultural capital of seers. The first cultural history of the seer, The Seer and the City illuminates the contests between religious and political powers in archaic and classical Greece.
