It is crowded with figures, each of which is a distinctive personality, conceived with that vividness and definiteness of outline which we expect in the work of John Oliver Hobbes; and we get Society life, the life of the stage, scenes abroad and at home, two very fascinating love stories, sympathetic studies both of Nonconformity and Roman Catholicism, while interwoven with the tale is a problem of modern life which will interest every reader and cause every reader to think. The story is written with John Oliver Hobbes' wonted epigrammatic incisiveness and scholarliness of phrase, is full of movement and animation, and will probably come to be regarded as one of the most notable contributions to English fiction for the last decade. --Saturday Review, Vol. 102 With all its vigor, its vitality, its occasional artificiality, it's too brilliant, too easy epigram, its cosmopolitan temper, its exquisite tenderness, its slightly metallic laughter, there is a deep note of world-weariness underlying The Dream and the Business. "Women of my type [writes the dying woman in the Epilogue] who are not strong enough physically to bear the strain of moral suffering, very soon, and gladly, flicker out.... Although we may have the courage to face hard things and the faith that can accept hard sayings, God mercifully allows us to die early in the fight. Do not you doubt that I have made a good little fight." Finally, the book concludes with words that seem to come straight from John Oliver Hobbes herself as a fitting farewell after the "good little fight" of a brave life had been concluded: "For the rest [wrote Jim Firmalden to Lessard], you know my creed: Poor vaunt of life indeed Were man but formed to feed On joy, to solely seek and find and feast; Such feasting ended, then As sure an end to men. Suffering can never be suppressed by statute. It is a law of nature, but, as all other laws of nature, since it must be obeyed, let us at least submit as sons of God and co-heirs with Christ -- not as beasts of burden and as those who believe that all labour is in vain." --The Dublin Review, Vol. 139

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Sinner's Comedy" is a story by John Oliver Hobbes, who first touched the public pulse in Some Emotion and a Moral. Although its author's name is new in fiction, The Sinner's Comedy does not strike one as a youthful work. It wears an air of experience: as if the writer knew too much to be merely cynical, and yet was so modern that he is afraid to be anything else than cynical. It is when you come to write about it that yon learn how little of a story there is to tell. The book may be read in an hour; and in that time some half-a-dozen characters are discovered with remarkable brilliancy. The method of the unfolding may be seen in this explanation of the change which took place in Richard Kilcoursie when he came into his title. "Then life took at once a wider and a narrower meaning: wider, because his interests covered a larger field, narrower, because his own personality-the figure of Sir Richard Kilcoursie-blocked up the way. Not that his egoism was loud-voiced or swaggering-it was merely constant: if his intellect had possessed an equal stability he would, no doubt, have achieved greatness." That passage illustrates the manner in which The Sinner's Comedy is written from first to last. The dialogue is brilliant with exactly the same brilliancy-; although two pages of Mrs. Grimmage's conversation display a turn for broader humour which the author nowhere else indulges. Thus, the story affords an intellectual rather than an emotional incitement. Nevertheless, it ends sentimentally; that is because in every case the story, and not the writer, must have the last word. We have a suspicion that through it all the author of The Sinner's Comedy is restraining sentiment. If So, the restraining process has resulted in one of the cleverest of recent books. -- National and English Review, Vol. 19

Book excerpt: As we think that John Oliver Hobbes' genius is best displayed in short stories, the public at large should welcome excellently printed edition of Some Emotions and a Moral, together with The Sinner's Comedy. Both stories coruscate with epigrams agreeably flavoured with cynicism. The moral, if moral it can be fitly called, applicable to the two, is that renunciation in love may sometimes, after all, be a mistake. --The Westminster Review, Vo. 164

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DAILY NEWS. It abounds in epigrams, and is full of sentiment and satire. The characters are drawn with a deft touch, the dialogue is swift and pointed, the setting is delicately artificial.... The book is full of felicities of phrase, of shafts of wit. DAILY TELEGRAPH. The style will be found to exhibit the same polish and frigid glitter as before. It is the story which is so poor and disappointing.... Nor is the character-drawing very felicitous, for although John Oliver Hobbes says very shrewd things about her personages, she seems hardly to have interpreted them to herself. If only this indubitably clever writer would forego the luxury of writing for a twelve-month! ATHENAEUM. It is like entering a new world to suddenly come across a book by John Oliver Hobbes.... There is hardly a page on which at least one epigram does not occur, or some admirably phrased description: the whole very cynical and pessimistic of course, but somehow all the more amusing for that.... Though some of the women are hardly dealt with, at least one and possibly two are charming.... This book must certainly be placed very high among the books which have given the Pseudonym Library its reputation. PALL MALL GAZETTE. John Oliver Hobbes must be careful.... "A Bundle of Life" will not do.... All her characters talk the talk that never was in drawing-room or smoking-room.... The story is hardly interesting, and the passion will not bear analysis. Some of the descriptions are clever, however, and the rest have an air of being clever, and John Oliver Hobbes is an undeniably clever writer, but she must be careful. WESTMINSTER GAZETTE. "A Bundle of Life" is amazingly clever, and shows the faculty of beating out character by a few swift strokes of dialogue.... It says much for John Oliver Hobbes that he can make the situations even plausible, and to do him justice he does much more than that.... The scene between Wicke and Lady Mallinger is really most admirable....The doings of these astonishing people are full of entertainment. NATIONAL OBSERVER. If John Oliver Hobbes could but make up his (or her) mind to be less vastly clever than he (or she) is, or essays to be, it would be an excellent thing for her (or his) work. The little book reeks with unbridled smartness.... It is nothing to you that some of the epigrams are good....Who shall thrive by sugar-plums alone?

The heir-apparent of Urseville Beylestein resigns his rank to win the hand of Clementine Gloucester, and sets out for the New World to push his fortunes as a financier. There are some extravagancies in the description of the American millionaire, and Mr. Gloucester's wife is a strange study, but Clementine herself is fascinating enough even to win the heart of a prince, and Prince Paul makes a good choice when he prefers such a woman to a kingdom. The book is less philosophical than The School for Saints, and as a story it has more life and more various interest. --The London Quarterly "Love and the Soul-Hunters" is one of the most amusing books published in a long time; it is full of the clever dialog which the author knows so well how to invent, but it is suffused with a grave tenderness, and, from beginning to end, envelopes the reader in a thoughtful atmosphere.... The author's art is exercised with peculiar delicacy and effect.... Every page is rich in these little touches, the little half-lights and suggestions which reflect not so much the practiced as the instinctively skilful hand. Love and the Soul-Hunters' is a book for mature men and women. To such readers it must bring a keen pleasure, touching them by the insight into human nature which it illustrates, and diverting them with its witty intellectuality." --The New York Tribune. This is a tender and beautiful love story.... Mrs. Craigie has treated it with an originality and sparkling wit which carry the reader delightedly to the end. --British Weekly. It is one of the most absorbing of the new books. It is a book that, once read, is destined never to be forgotten. --The Providence Telegram.
