Book excerpt: The Tail of Jasmine Court by Royce LaLonde On Jasmine Court lives a sweet ,little cat named Autumn who very recently lost her best friend, her sister Snowflake. As months dragged into a year, Autumn’s sadness turned into an angry bitterness. To Autumn, the whole world had gone crazy, nothing made sense to her anymore. To make matters worse, Mama, brought home a DOG!!! Did Mama think a stupid, stinking, DOG could take the place of Snowflake? Even worse it was a puppy, a dumb puppy! Now , Mama spent all her time oohing and ahhing over Chloe Puppy Dog instead of consoling Autumn with hugs and kisses. After several months of enduring the audacity of sharing Mama with the new “adorable puppy.” ( Mama’s words -not Autumn’s for Autumn’s words would certainly be inappropriate!) Autumn discovers that an embarrassing rumor about her is being spread around the court. She knows it can’t be Tooter ,the wise old gray cat, who leads the court. It can’t be the two dogs across the street because they are dogs and dogs are too stupid to think of something more complicated than finding their bowls not to mention that they are just flat out lazy! Since it couldn’t be Tooter or the dumb dogs then it could only be Chloe Puppy Dog! She was always yapping and yapping about nonsense. Filled with burning revenge, Autumn plots a vivacious plan to get even with the dumb dog for taking all Mama’s attention and spreading nasty rumors. When her plan tragically backfires, Autumn learns to leave revenge to the Lord.

Look for her next adventure, in the City of Jasmine.

Book excerpt: Afeni Shakur, one of the most visible figures in both the hip-hop and civil rights movements, reveals her moral and spiritual development in an innovative memoir spanning four decades. Before becoming one of the most well-known members of the Black Power movement, Alice Faye Williams was not unlike any other poor, African American girl growing up in the impoverished South. But when her family moved to New York during the radical sixties, she became intoxicated by the promise of social change. By the time she turned twenty-one, Alice had a new name—Afeni Shakur, derived from the Yoruba term for "lover of people"—and a new vision for the future. The rest is history. In 1969, Afeni was arrested along with other members of the Black Panther party on 189 felony charges that included 30 counts of conspiracy. Though she was eventually acquitted of the charges, Afeni spent eleven months in jail before being released. Once on bail, she became pregnant with a son: Tupac Amaru Shakur, a rap megastar until his tragic death in 1996. In this searing work, renowned actress and Afeni's trusted friend Jasmine Guy reveals the evolution of a woman through a series of intimate conversations on themes such as love, death, race, drugs, politics, music, and, of course, her son. Filled with startling revelations and heartbreaking truths, Afeni's memoir is a powerful testament to the human spirit and the perseverance of the African American people.

This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some playwrights have a gift to amuse; Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig has a darker gift. Anyone with romantic notions of Chinese culture will be unsettled by the jagged, unsentimental portrait of modern urban China."(Chicago Reader) Poetic and devastating, sensuous and politically acute, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's China Plays explore the forces of global capital as they explode within the lives of everyday people in contemporary China. This volume collects together the three plays in the series, including Cowhig's exploration of the human cost of development in China's socialist market economy (The World of Extreme Happiness), of justice and revenge amidst ecological and economic catastrophe (Snow in Midsummer), and the tale of the trade in blood that brought the AIDS crisis to rural China (The King of Hell's Palace). In addition to Cowhig's plays, the volume includes a host of supplemental materials including an editorial preface and three (previously published) brief essays responding to each play by the editor, Joshua Chambers-Letson; a new introduction by theatre/performance scholar and dramaturg Christine Mok that explores the key themes in Cowhig's body of work; a summary discussion between Cowhig, Chambers-Letson, and Mok, on Cowhig's process and the political and aesthetic currents animating her work. The World of Extreme Happiness: "Fearless, zippily-paced, and satirical . . . Cowhig forces us down the long hard look path" (Independent) Snow in Midsummer: “Gripping and affecting... graceful and impassioned” (Times) The King of Hell's Palace: "A medical-scandal drama that we can't afford to ignore" (Telegraph)

Book excerpt: They were the Finest Creations--mystically forged creatures of perfection sent by the creators to aid the Fallen (mankind) during their mortal existence. Though they resemble ordinary horses they are highly intelligent, capable of communicating telepathically, and completely moral. They are assigned to bond with individuals of great potential and to protect them from harm while guiding them along a path of virtue. THE FINEST CHALLENGE Kalantha has successfully rescued her brother from the shadow of the evil bishop's bellicose influence, but now finds herself cut off from both him and her Finest protector, Gallant Stallion. All three must race against the clock to curtail the unnecessary war that the Bishop’s minions have engineered. And, still lurking in the shadows and prowling the night skies is the avian menace whose dreams of a carrion-strewn countryside can still come through if their equine nemesis is neutralized. The Finest series combines elements of Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar series with C.S. Lewis’s Narnia to tell an inspiring tale of moral and mystical intrigue. Book excerpt: State failure takes many forms. Somalia offers one extreme. The country's prolonged civil war led to the collapse of central authority, with state control devolving to warlord-led factions that competed for the spoils of local commerce, political power, and international aid. Malawi, on the other hand, is at the other end of the scale. During President Bingu's second term in office, the country's economy collapsed as a result of poor policies and Bingu's brand of personal politics. On the surface, Malawi's economy seemed largely stable; underneath, however, the polity was fractured and the economy broken. In between these two extremes of state failure are all manner of examples, many of which Mills explores in the fascinating and profoundly personal Why States Recover. Throughout he returns to his key questions: how do countries recover? What roles should both insiders and outsiders play to aid that process? Drawing on research in more than thirty countries, and incorporating interviews with a dozen leaders, Mills examines state failure and identifies instances of recovery in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. For anyone interested in the reasons behind states' failure, and remedies to ensure future economic stability, it is important reading.
