Book excerpt: Taboo breakers. Films that pushed boundaries, overstepped the line or simply went all out to shock. Whether through their advertising or their content these are the movies that used shock tactics to sell tickets. Film critic and journalist Calum Waddell subjects 18 films to analysis and puts them into historical perspective, whilst discussing the films and their impact with those involved in their production. All of these movies, some good, some bad and some very, very bad indeed, carried with them a certain marketing savvy and air of controversy which ensures that they will stay in the mind long after the screen goes blank. Films covered are: Blood Feast, Night of the Living Dead, Behind the Green Door, Fritz the Cat, Tenderness of Wolves, Coffy, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, Candy Tangerine Man, Halloween, Cannibal Holocaust, Maniac, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain, The Plague Dogs, Evil Dead, House of 1000 Corpses, Oldboy and Hostel. Featuring exclusive interviews with Herschell Gordon Lewis, David Friedman, Connie Mason, George Romero, Judith O'Dea, Marilyn Chambers, Ralph Bakshi, Ulli Lommel, Jack Hill, Sid Haig, Ed Neil, Kim Henkel, Gunnar Hansen, Jeff Burr, Robert Burns, Don Edmonds, Howard Maurer, Dyanne Thorne, Matt Cimber, John Carpenter, P J Soles, Irwin Yablans, Ruggero Deotato, Carl Gabriel Yorke, Robert Kerman, William Lustig, Romano Scavolini, Baird Stafford, Martin Rosen, Tom Sullivan, Ellen Sandweiss, Rob Zombie, Bill Moseley, Park Chan-Wook, Eli Roth and Scott Spiegel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sexual upheaval of the 1970s was a remarkable turning point in the evolution of contemporary sexual behavior. As much as anyone, John Warren Wells stalked the barricades of this social revolution. He met the players, and let them pour their stories into his sympathetic ear. From the original publisher's edition: " The Taboo Breakers is a penetrating, unbiased study of these modern "swingers." Just what do they do, and with whom, and why? Are they fools and sinners, the shock troops of a new sexual revolution, hell-bent hedonists piling one thrill upon another? Or are they merely individuals who have successfully separated sex from love? John Warren Wells, author of Eros and Capricorn, supplies the answers in a book that is itself a pioneering work...a true taboo breaker."

Book Synopsis Taboo Topics by : Norman L. Farberow
Download or read book Taboo Topics written by Norman L. Farberow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to investigate taboo topics? A myriad of forces shape and fashion human action, reaction, thought, and feeling, and these are not always well understood. Norman L. Farberow argues that culture itself provides structure for its members, developing in a well-defined way the rules to which they will conform. Such rules find expression not only in written laws and regulations but include, and most often stem from, unwritten folkways, customs, and especially taboos, the subject of this book. The researchers reporting in this volume take no position on the nature of a taboo itself, but concentrate on the difficulty in investigating taboos. As members of society and human beings, they do make judgments and personal investments. Thus, when taboos continue or develop without useful society-enriching functions or facilitate self-destructive activities, they raise questions about why they persist.Such topics include many areas‘some social, such as sex, death, and peace; others more academic, such as parapsychology, graphology, religion, and hypnosis. Peace and the public are included in the discussion because they are emotion-laden areas and powerful and important factors in a shrinking world and expanding universe. Peace, especially, has begun to be looked upon with suspicion perhaps a real commentary on our times. This probing collection will be sure to interest sociologists, anthropologists, and all other social scientists.

Download or read book Non-Nuclear Peace written by Tom Sauer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the possibility of a world without nuclear weapons. It starts from the observation that, although nuclear deterrence has long been dominant in debates about war and peace, recent events show that ridicule and stigmatization of nuclear weapons and their possessors is on the rise. The idea of non-nuclear peace has been around since the beginning of the nuclear revolution, but it may be staging a return. The first part reconstructs the criticism of nuclear peace, both past and present, with a particular emphasis on technology. The second part focuses on the most revolutionary change since the beginning of the nuclear revolution, namely the Humanitarian Initiative and the resulting Nuclear Ban Treaty (2017), which allows imagining non-nuclear peace anew. The third and last part explores the practical and institutional prospects of a peace order without nuclear weapons. If non-nuclear peace advocates want to convince skeptics, they have to come up with practical solutions in the realm of global governance or world government.

Book Synopsis Intimate Relations by : Christine Weder
Download or read book Intimate Relations written by Christine Weder and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shows that engagement with art and literature was essential to the programmatic sexual theories of the late 1960s and early 70s and that the period's aesthetic theories were characterized by forms of sexual obsession. In the period around and after 1968, sexuality and the arts entered into a remarkably intimate and mutually beneficial relationship: on one hand, scientific theories of sexuality and their pop-psychological counterparts incorporated lengthy reflections on art movements and literary texts, since artistic media were understood as crucial to the project of inventing radically new modes of human living and loving. On the other hand, the aesthetic ambitions that informed new conceptions of sexuality had their mirror image in the varying forms of sexual obsession that characterized contemporary aesthetic theories. Approaches as diverse as those of Theodor W. Adorno, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Leslie A. Fiedler, Peter Gorsen, and Herbert and Ludwig Marcuse all contributed to a dramatic eroticization of the arts. Christine Weder's interdisciplinary study explores this largely neglected relationship, providing a dual insight into an era of profound transformation: she demonstrates how and why the engagement with art and literature was essential to the programmatic theories of the new Eros. At the same time, she offers a fresh historical perspective on aesthetics around 1968. Whereas aesthetic developments in the late sixties have conventionally been conceived in terms of politicization, Weder demonstrates that the sexualization of the arts was no less profound, and in doing so contributes to a fundamental reframing of this tumultuous period"--
Download or read book Sigmund Freud written by Robert Bocock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2002. To those who see Freud solely as a psychologist and a psychotherapist it may be surprising to find him discussed as a major contributor to sociology. In this book, Robert Bocock argues that Freud’s work, far from being exclusively concerned with individual personality seen in abstraction from the social and cultural environment, does have important implications for social theory and is not always given the serious sociological study it deserves. Bocock demonstrates Freud’s central relevance to sociological discussions about gender, sexuality, the family, religion, ideology and symbolism, political authority, and language, and examines the considerable influence that Freud’s theories have had upon sociological schools.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Talmud by : Hyam Maccoby
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Talmud written by Hyam Maccoby and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new presentation of the philosophy of the Talmud. The Talmud is not a work of formal philosophy, but much of what it says is relevant to philosophical enquiry, including issues explored in contemporary debates. In particular, the Talmud has original ideas about the relation between universal ethics and the ethics of a particular community. This leads into a discussion on the relation between morality and ritual, and also about the epistemological role of tradition. The book explains the paradoxes of Talmudic Judaism as arising from a philosophy of revolution, stemming from Jewish origins as a band of escaped slaves, determined not to reproduce the slave-society of Egypt. From this arises a daring humanism, and an emphasis on justice in this world rather than on other-worldly spirituality. A strong emphasis on education and the cultivation of rationality also stems from this. Governing the discussion is a theory of logic that differs significantly from Greek logic. Talmudic logic is one of analogy, not classification and is peculiarly suited to discussions of moral and legal human situations. This book will be of interest to those in the fields of philosophy, religion and the history of ideas, whether students, teachers and academics, or the interested general reader.
