Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF METAL PHOSPHINE COMPLEXES OF PALLADIUM(II) AND GOLD(I) WITH VARIOUS RECEPTOR LIGANDS FOR ION-CONTROLLED OR PHOTORESPONSIVE HOST-GUEST CHEMISTRY Submitted by Tang Hau San for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 A series of palladium(II) phosphine complexes containing different receptor sites, [Pd(PPh R) Cl] [R = C H NHCOCH, C H N(CH )COCH, 2 2 2 6 4 3 6 4 3 3 C HNHCONHPh, C HNHCOPyr and C H NHCO(CH )Pyr] have been 6 4 6 4 6 4 2 3 prepared. Two X-ray crystal structures have been determined, in which one of the crystal structures showed hydrogen bonding interactions between the amide protons and the Cl ions with distances of ca. 2.466 A. The photophysical properties of these complexes have been studied and their emission origins were elucidated. The binding properties of the complexes towards anions have 1 31 been studied by H NMR, P NMR, UV-vis and emission spectrophotometry, in which drastic changes in the ratio of trans to cis isomers upon addition of 31 anions were observed in the P NMR titration studies. The present ion-induced conformational change involving a trans-cis isomerization of the square-planar palladium(II) complex via the binding of anions to amide or urea functionalities through hydrogen bonding interactions represents a new class of ion-controlled switching devices based on transition metal systems. A series of gold(I) alkynyl phosphine complexes containing azobenzene or stilbene functionalities, [{Au(PPh )} (C≡C-L-C≡C)] and [Au (P DEGREESP) (C≡C-L- 3 2 4 2 C≡C) ] [L = C H -N=N-C H or C H -CH=CH-C H; P DEGREESP = dppm, dcpm, 2 6 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 Ph PN(C H F-p)PPh, Ph PN( Pr)PPh, Ph PN(C H )PPh] have been 2 6 4 2 2 2 2 14 29 2 synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure of [Au (dppm) (C≡C- 4 2 L-C≡C) ] revealed that the two azobenzene ligands in the tetranuclear complex adopted a trans disposition with the presence of short intramolecular Au Au contacts. The azobenzene-containing gold(I) complexes showed emissions both in dichloromethane solution at room temperature and in 77 K glass, which were assigned as a metal-perturbed intraligand (IL) origin mainly derived from the π-π*(C≡C) states with some mixing of a π-π* character of the azo unit. On the other hand, the emissive origin of the stilbene-containing gold(I) complexes was assigned as derived from the π-π* excited state of the stilbene moiety with some mixing of the alkynyl units, and probably mixed with σ(Au-P) → π*(C≡C) excited state in the solid states. The photoisomerization properties of the dinuclear and tetranuclear complexes have been studied, in which a tetranuclear macrocyclic gold(I) alkynyl phosphine complex was demonstrated to function as a dual input molecular logic with photoswitching behaviour that could be controlled by addition or removal of silver(I). In addition, several gold(I) complexes with different crown ether pendants including the mercapto-azacrown ether-containing complexes, [Au (P DEGREESP)(S-A15C5) ] [P DEGREESP = dppm, dcpm] and the mononuclear gold(I) alkynyl 2 2 complexes, [Au(PPh )(C≡CR)] [R = B15C5, B15S5], and dinuclear gold(I) complexes with oligo(ethylene oxide) linkages, [{(Ph P)
Book Synopsis Exploring the Bonding and Reaction Chemistry of Gold and Platinum Complexes by : Bruce Wayne Flint
Download or read book Exploring the Bonding and Reaction Chemistry of Gold and Platinum Complexes written by Bruce Wayne Flint and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platinum complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Relative Pt-X Bond Dissociation Energies (BDE's) for these complexes have been calculated from experimentally measured equilibrium and organic BDE's. Changes in relative BDE's are noted when ligands for the complexes are exchanged. Oxygen atom transfer reactions by a new platinum hydroxo catalyst have been studied. This catalyst is generated by the reaction of a platinum oxo complex with water and catalytically activates the reaction of the this complex with ethylene. The kinetics of this reaction have been studied and a reaction pathway has been proposed. The synthesis and characterization of a series of heteroatom substituted gold imido complexes have been reported. It has been demonstrated that the stability of gold imido complexes has a linear free energy relationship with the donor strength of the adjacent phosphine ligand. The decomposition of the complex involves the release of a free nitrene. Larger phosphine ligands retard the decomposition, and the decomposition is blocked by alkylation of the hydrazido ligand.

Book Synopsis Synthesis and Reactivity of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) Cyclometallated and Tridentate Complexes Derived from Iminophosphines and Phosphinoamides by : Terence James Maguire

This book was released on 2009 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the synthesis and reactivity of platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes with mixed donor ligands containing [P, N, C] and [P, N, O] donor sets derived from iminophosphines and phosphinoamides. Chapter 1 introduces the concepts and principles, like hemilability, that influence the formation of stable complexes and how this stabilisation can influence the reactivity of the complex. This is highlighted using aminophosphines and iminophosphines as examples. In order to present the application of these mixed-donor complexes, a comprehensive overview of platinum complex chemistry, including Pt(IV) complexes, trans complexes and cyclometallates, in medicine is given. Chapter 2 reports the coordination chemistry of two types of [P, N, C] donor ligands; iminophosphines HL1-4 and phosphinoamides HL5-7 to generate a novel library of monodentate, bidentate and tridentate cyclometallated Pt(II) species by a variety of methods. Chapter 3 describes the synthesis of novel ionic, monophosphine substituted Pt(II) complexes of [P, N, C] and [P, N, O] ligands. The iminophosphine ([P, N, C] and [P, N, O]) complexes underwent substitution with all three of the phosphines introduced. However, the success of the reaction of the iminolphosphine [P, N, C] complexes depended on the nature of the phosphine used. This leads to the conclusion that substitution reactions of iminolphosphine complexes are influenced by a combination of basicity and steric bulk of the incoming ligand. Chapter 4 reports the oxidation of bidentate and cyclometallated Pt(II) complexes to generate a novel series of Pt(IV) species. Additionally it reports 1H and 31P{1H} NMR investigations into the reduction of Pt(IV) by low molecular weight thiols and finally describes the reaction of the Pt(II) cyclometallates with the same low molecular weight thiols. All compounds synthesised in chapters 2-4 were characterised by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectoscopies. Selected complexes were also analysed using single X-ray crystal analyses and mass spectrometry.

Download or read book Platinum(II) Hydroxo, Oxo, Amido, Imido and Hydrazido Complexes written by Jian-Jun Li and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late transition metal oxo and imido complexes are important models for catalytic reactions involving oxygen and nitrogen transfer. The subject of this dissertation is the synthesis and reactivity study of a series of platinum(II) hydroxo, oxo, amido, imido and hydrazido complexes. The platinum(II) hydroxo complex (L$\sb2$Pt($\mu$-OH)) $\rm\sb2X\sb2$ is prepared from the reaction of L$\rm\sb2PtCl\sb2$ with two equivalents of AgX. Deprotonation of the hydroxo complex (L$\rm\sb2Pt(\mu$-OH)) $\sb2\sp{2+}$ yields corresponding oxo complexes. The site of deprotonation depends on the phosphine ligands. Pt(II) $\mu$-amido complexes are synthesized from the reaction of $\mu$-hydroxo complexes (L$\rm\sb2Pt(\mu$-OH)) $\rm\sb2(BF\sb4)\sb2$ with amines H$\sb2$NR. The result of the reaction depends on the ligand L$\sb2$ of the $\mu$-hydroxo complexes as well as on the R group of the amines. Treating (L$\rm\sb2Pt(\mu$-OH)) $\rm\sb2(BF\sb4)\sb2$ with two equivalents of H$\rm\sb2NNH\sb2$ generates an unusual hydrazido complex (L$\rm\sb2Pt(\mu$-NHNH$\rm\sb2)\rbrack\sb2(BF\sb4)\sb2$ which can be deprotonated to give ((dppm-H)Pt($\mu$-NHNH$\sb2)\rbrack\sb2$.
