This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book covers various aspects of prepositional syntax between c. 900-1400, including case relations and the range of prepositional complements; it also examines word order, both within the PP and at clause level, and it explores changes in clausal word order. Furthermore, it provides a detailed semantic analysis of the three prepositions at, in and on in selected Old and Middle English texts, which shows to what extent the relative distribution of these prepositions changed during that period and how they gradually acquired new, extended senses. The front cover illustration renders the 895 entry of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Parker Ms., and has been reproduced with the permission of the Master and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
Book Synopsis Genitives in Early English by : Cynthia L. Allen
Download or read book Genitives in Early English written by Cynthia L. Allen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the evidence for the development of adnominal genitives (the knight's sword, the nun's priest's tale, etc.) in English. During the Middle English period the genitive inflection -es became either the possessive his or the clitic 's, but how, when, why, and over how long a time are unclear, and have been subject to considerable research and discussion. Cynthia Allen draws together her own and others' findings in areas such as case marking, the nature of syntactic and morphological change, and the role of processing and pragmatics in the construction of grammars and grammatical change. Using evidence derived from a systematic examination of a wide range of texts, she reviews the evidence for the nature of the possessive inflection in earlier stages of English. In doing so Dr Allen shows that Middle English texts are more reliable witnesses to the grammar of Middle English than has sometimes been assumed, and that where the written evidence runs counter to typological generalization about syntactic change it may be the latter, not the former, which is in need of qualification. The texts may have been conservative, but their language, the author argues, is a reasonable reflection of the spoken language. While the book focuses on Middle English it also contains discussions of linguistic change before and since, and draws on comparative evidence from other languages, particularly Germanic languages such as Swedish and Dutch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederik Theodor Visser's An Historical Syntax of the English Language, published in four massive volumes between 1963 and 1973, is certainly one of the cornerstones of research in English linguistics. Visser's achievements can hardly be overestimated. Before the advent of modern corpus linguistics, he compiled a remarkable wealth of detailed philological data from all periods of English and combined this with current grammatical analyses of his time. This has made this publications an indispensable resource for anyone investigating the history of English syntax. This reproduction of Visser's volumes is more than welcome, and timely, as the volumes have been out of print for quite some time and were sometimes a little bit difficult to navigate. Having a searchable and easy-to-use online version, although maybe not perfect, available now means a revival for scholarship that celebrates its fiftieth birthday without losing any of its relevance.
Book Synopsis A New English Grammar by : Henry Sweet
Download or read book A New English Grammar written by Henry Sweet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The respected phonetician and philologist Henry Sweet (1845–1912) has had a lasting influence on the study and teaching of linguistics, particularly phonetics and Old English. Sweet is also known for being, in part, the inspiration for Henry Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion. This two-volume work, first published in 1892–8, marks the start of a new tradition in the study of English, although it received little attention in Britain upon its publication. Building on developments in European linguistics, this was the first grammar of English to adopt a scientific approach to the description of language, in particular of phonology. The work is a thorough description of English grammar in comparison with that of Old English, and covers the parts of speech, phonology, accidence and syntax. Volume 2 (1898) presents a detailed description of English syntax.

Book Synopsis The Development of Old English by : Don Ringe
Download or read book The Development of Old English written by Don Ringe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the second volume in A Linguistic History of English, describes the development of Old English from Proto-Germanic. Like Volume I, it is an internal history of the structure of English that combines traditional historical linguistics, modern syntactic theory, the study of languages in contact, and the variationist approach to language change. The first part of the book considers the development of Northwest and West Germanic, and the northern dialects of the latter, with particular reference to phonological and morphological phenomena. Later chapters present a detailed account of changes in the Old English sound system, inflectional system, and syntax. The book aims to make the findings of traditional historical linguistics accessible to scholars and students in other subdisciplines, and also to adopt approaches from contemporary theoretical linguistics in such a way that they are accessible to a wide range of historical linguists.
