I have made but slight use of the Second Series of Synonyms by His Grace the Archbishop of Dublin. I have adopted freely the matter contained in the First Series, which has become rapidly incorporated in the general stock of Theological literature. As I have attempted to desynonymize some words which have not been treated by previous writers, I will only hope that all my readers will extend to me that favourable indulgence, with which His Grace welcomed my earlier efforts in this interesting and instructive pursuit.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepositions are important in the exegesis of the Greek New Testament, but they are at the same time very slippery words because they can have so many nuances. While Prepositions and Theology in the Greek New Testament rejects the idea of a “theology of the prepositions,” it is a study of the numerous places in the Greek New Testament where prepositions contribute to the theological meaning of the text. Offered in the hope that it might encourage close study of the Greek text of the New Testament, its many features include the following: Coverage of all 17 “proper” and 42 “improper” prepositions Explores both literary and broader theological contexts Greek font—not transliteration—used throughout Comprehensive indexes to hundreds of verses, subjects, and Greek words Discussion of key repeated phrases that use a particular preposition

(Sec Vocabulary.) 1 Or perhaps the plural in these words may denote repetition. The sun rises or sets there " again and again." ' Of the plural in this sense there is no other instance in the Scriptures, and only one in the classics. The plural of blood is often found in the LXX. (from the Hebrew), where violent bloodshedding is denoted. 3 In this expression (not in the other), some would read evylo. (fem.), as referring to a noun, like xdnpa, place. This is, however, most unlikely. ofipavol, heavens, is found with meaning indistinguishable from or'/pdvos, heaven. The plural usage probably arose from the Hebrew, where the word is always plural: " the parts of the firmament." There is also " the third heaven." Matthew almost always has the plural; Luke, almost always the singular; Mark, most usually the singular; John, the singular always, except in Rev. xii. 12. The other parts of the New Testament vary between the two almost equally. Other plurals of this kind will be sufficiently explained in the Vocabulary. b. 1. In the second above-mentioned class may be included those cases where persons are said generally to do what was really done by one of their number. Thus, Matt. xxvi. 8, "his clisciples said, To what purpose," etc.; while in John xii. 4 we read, " one of his disciples, Judas." Compare Mark vii. 17 with Matt. xv. 15; Matt. xiv. l7 and Mark vi. 38 with John vi. 8, 9; Matt. xxiv. 1 with Mark xiii. 1; Matt. xxvii. 37 with John xix. 19; Matt. xxvii. 48 and Mark xv. 36 with..."
