Book Synopsis The Sword and the Scales by : Cesare P. R. Romano
Download or read book The Sword and the Scales written by Cesare P. R. Romano and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sword and the Scales is the first in-depth and comprehensive study of attitudes and behaviors of the United States toward major international courts and tribunals, including the International Courts of Justice, WTO, and NAFTA dispute settlement systems; the Inter-American Court of Human Rights; and all international criminal courts. Thirteen essays by American legal scholars map and analyze current and past patterns of promotion or opposition, use or neglect, of international judicial bodies by various branches of the United States government, suggesting a complex and deeply ambivalent relationship. The United States has been, and continues to be, not only a promoter of the various international courts and tribunals but also an active participant of the judicial system. It appears before some of the international judicial bodies frequently and supports more, both politically and financially. At the same time, it is less engaged than it could be, particularly given its strong rule of law foundations and its historical tradition of commitment to international law and its institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the storied Massachusetts eateries that have left an indelible mark on their customers. Author Christopher Setterlund details the history of the iconic establishments of the Cape, still fresh in the memories of patrons, complete with famous recipes. Bill and Thelma’s was hugely popular with students from the 1950s to the 1970s, often packed with locals after sporting events and dances. Starbuck’s Restaurant in Hyannis featured the Chief Justice Warren Burger Burger and the Larry Bird Burger on its menu and boasted of the soup du jour, “We don't know what it is, but we have it every day.” Opinions differ on how the Reno Diner actually got its name, whether from a broken sign or a local appliance company. This fun collection is sure to arouse some fond memories of these old eateries, and perhaps a little hunger too. “Forty chapters—one each for 39 restaurants and another for some recipes—make for a delicious and nostalgic read.” —Barnstable Patriot

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Generation: The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington, Under Fire: The Story of a Squad by Henri Barbusse. After the First World War, special people returned to their home towns from the front. When the war began, they were still boys, but duty forced them to defend the homeland. "Lost Generation" - as they were called. This concept is used today when we talk about writers who worked during the breaks between the First and Second World Wars, which became a test for all of humanity and were almost all beaten out of their usual, peaceful rut. One of the themes that commonly appears in the authors' works is decadence and the frivolous lifestyle of the wealthy. Writers of the lost generation raise in their works the problem of young people who returned from the war and did not find their home, their relatives. Questions about how to live, how to remain human, how to learn to enjoy life again - this is what is paramount in this literary movement. Table of Contents: 1. Ernest Hemingway: A Farewell to Arms 2. Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises 3. Francis Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby 4. Richard Aldington: Death of a Hero 5. Henri Barbusse: Under Fire: The Story of a Squad

On this island, with its cruel legacy of slave trade and Latin revolution, and its turbulent present of marijuana millionaires, threadbare illegal immigrants, and hard-luck treasure hunters, lives St. Cloud, an American expatriated in his own country, a fugitive from the unresolved anguish of his generation. Chronicling St. Cloud's dangerous reawakening, Mile Zero illuminates the inward and outward tumult of our time in a huge, startling, and profoundly felt novel.
Book Synopsis Dawn of The Coruscus by : Maximillian Q. Letizi
Download or read book Dawn of The Coruscus written by Maximillian Q. Letizi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel starts with a prologue dealing with the mythology surrounding the development of two different species of mankind: the group of people designated as Homo Sapiens and the much smaller subtype know as Cro-Magnon Man. The action starts immediately with the two groups clashing and then differentiating into the development of civilizations populated by Homo Sapiens but mentored by Cro-Magnon known as the Coruscus. As the adventure develops other themes come into play. “The capacity of the Coruscus to influence the whims of nature has been characterized by numerous titles, the most common of which is known as magic.” Magic is the undercurrent of this action adventure but there are more themes which become sophisticated in both concept and presentation. For example, the idea of life beyond death is explored. There are detailed description of Virgil’s journey into the realms of life beyond this physical plane. There are also metaphysical themes running through this novel with detailed descriptions of chakra meditations as necessary preparations for Virgil to enter into the realms beyond the first plane of physical life. The dark side of human nature is explored but mostly in the context of an adventure story about the Coruscus known as Virgil and his warrior companion known as Glaiden. The story describes how their relationship was developed and how their efforts to evade the overwhelming Roman forces of the rouge Coruscus known as Baracore. When evasion is no longer an option, battles ensue.
