Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Church of Sweden We rejoice that you Anglican bishops have for some time had in View the binding together Of your Church and ours in some sort Of alliance. I would ask that you should deliberate as to the points and the method of such an alliance with Henry William Tottie, Bishop of Kalmar, my beloved colleague, who, with your kind permission and under the orders Of our most gracious King, is about to come to the council which you are soon to hold. Bishop Tottie also addressed the conference, on which he made a remarkable impression by his fine presence, his dignified bearing and his sympathetic and intelligent attitude. At the same time the conference received a report of the committee on re-union and inter-communion (of which I had the honour to be chairman), which contained a chapter on the Scandinavian Churches,1 in which it dealt particularly with the Church in Sweden. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Sweden and the Anglican Communion The following papers are submitted to the Episcopate and others, as evidence bearing upon the Form, Intention, and Continuance of Holy Orders in the Swedish National Church. Opinions heretofore published seem to have been based upon one or another of the various forms, and never upon them all. I have tried to make all the actually material evidence accessible in fair English, having more regard, however, to accuracy than to elegance, and feeling that a double rendering of a phrase or word here or there would be no loss, if both renderings were fair. The Lambeth Commission which has visited Sweden may conclude its labors by a Report to the Arch bishop oi Canterbury Within the near future. But as the Swedish Church has only just appointed a Standing Commission on the sub jcet, it may be presumed that the Commission may continue in activity for some time to come, and report to the Lambeth Conference proposed for 1918. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Pictures From Swedish Church History The religious spirit of Ansgar was very early molded for his future vocation by certain dreams, occasioned partly through his peculiar bent of mind and partly by his environment. One night during his first years in the cloister he dreamed that he himself was in a dismal marsh, but nearby lay a pleasant plain, where he saw ap proaching him a company of holy women clad in white and among them his own mother. One of them, whom he took for the Virgin Mary, asked him: My son, would you like to come to your mother? When he had replied affirmatively to that question, the Virgin Mary said to him: If you wish to be one of our company, you must not indulge in vanities and childish pranks, for we will not tolerate vanity and idleness, and whosoever finds pleasure in such things cannot be in our com pany. So deep was the impression of this dream on Ansgar's mind that he withdrew from child ish folly, and at the age of twelve years became an ascetic of the order of St. Augustine. But in spite of his prayers, reading and singing, his ascetic zeal languished, and he found no peace for his troubled soul. This depression reached its depth in 814, when he was informed of the death of Charlemagne, whom he had seen shortly before in imperial power and glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Olavus Petri: The Church Reformer of Sweden By God's grace alone are we justified and have eternal life, when in humble faith we behold Jesus, the Lamb of God, and follow Him. Thus we have cause also to cherish in grateful remembrance those of His servants who have preached His gospel in its purity to our fathers and to us. Hence it behooves us as a Lutheran people, for the better observance of their doctrines and precepts, to keep a steady eye on our great teacher Martin Luther at all times, and to give second place in our esteem to that foremost champion of Church Reformation in our Swedish fatherland - Olavus Petri. In remembrance of our studies in Church History and Pastoral Theology, please accept, dear brethren, this guide to the life and teachings of the Swedish Reformer, Olavus Petri, "preacher of the Word of God." Brief as it is, it has been drawn from the best of historic sources. To Mr. Ernst W. Olson, for his services in rendering the manuscript into English, my grateful acknowledgment is due. Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Book excerpt: The Greatest Feminist Classics in One Volume curates an unparalleled collection of literary works that together trace the evolution and impact of feminist thought across generations and geographies. Including an array of literary styles from the pioneering novel to insightful essays, and groundbreaking plays this anthology situates itself within a critical period of social and literary history where the voices of women, and some supportive men, began to loudly question and dismantle the patriarchal structures limiting their lives. The breadth of diversity and the literary richness of works, inclusive of seminal pieces by figures like Virginia Woolf and Harriet Martineau, illustrate the multifaceted nature of feminist discourse, showcasing variations in approach, perspective, and outcome that have enriched the dialogue on gender equality and womens rights. The contributors to this volume, ranging from Henrik Ibsen to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, are as varied in their backgrounds as in their writing styles, representing a wide spectrum of the 19th and early 20th centuries' intellectual and cultural landscape. These authors, collectively, offer insights into feminist thought's evolution, aligning with several critical movements from Romanticism to Modernism. Their works collectively highlight how different cultures, historical periods, and personal experiences have shaped understandings and expressions of gender and identity, providing readers with a comprehensive overview of feminisms literary and social significance. For readers seeking to immerse themselves in the foundational texts of feminist literature, The Greatest Feminist Classics in One Volume presents a unique and enriching opportunity. It invites a broad audience to explore the transformative power of words in shaping societal norms and values regarding gender. This collection not only serves as an educational resource but also as a starting point for discussions about the diversity of feminist perspectives and the ongoing struggle for equality. Engaging with these texts offers an unparalleled insight into the legacy of feminist thought, making this anthology an essential addition to any literary collection.

Book excerpt: Martin Luther's 'The Collected Works of Martin Luther' is a comprehensive collection of writings by the influential theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation. The book covers a wide range of topics including theology, biblical interpretation, and the relationship between church and state. Luther's writing style is direct, passionate, and deeply rooted in his spiritual beliefs, making it both engaging and thought-provoking for readers. This collection provides valuable insights into the historical and religious context of the 16th century Europe, shedding light on the turbulent times in which Luther lived and worked. Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian, wrote these works in response to the corruption and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. His bold ideas and critiques sparked a major religious movement and forever changed the course of Western Christianity. Luther's personal experiences and strong convictions are evident in his writing, making it a valuable resource for scholars and readers interested in the Reformation era. I highly recommend 'The Collected Works of Martin Luther' to anyone interested in the history of Christianity, theology, or the Protestant Reformation. Luther's writings are not only historically significant but also intellectually stimulating, offering a unique perspective on faith and spirituality.
