Book Synopsis Surface Effects in Solid Mechanics by : Holm Altenbach
Download or read book Surface Effects in Solid Mechanics written by Holm Altenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the actual state of the art and future trends of surface effects in solid mechanics. Surface effects are more and more important in the precise description of the behavior of advanced materials. One of the reasons for this is the well-known from the experiments fact that the mechanical properties are significantly influenced if the structural size is very small like, for example, nanostructures. In this book, various authors study the influence of surface effects in the elasticity, plasticity, viscoelasticity. In addition, the authors discuss all important different approaches to model such effects. These are based on various theoretical frameworks such as continuum theories or molecular modeling. The book also presents applications of the modeling approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contact mechanics and surface effects, as well as their interaction, are important in modern engineering. The life and performance of structural components is affected by surface conditions such as wear, corrosion and, high cycle fatigue. Surface treatments that address contact conditions can reduce costs by extending the life of components. These are the subjects of a biennial conference first held in 1993, the papers from the latest of which are collected in this volume. The book discusses Computer simulation; Surface modification; Surface treatments; Surface problems in contact mechanics; Contact mechanics; Applications and case studies; Indentation and hardness; Thick and thin coatings; Corrosion problems; Nano-characterisation; Test methodology; Multiscale experiments and modelling; and Fracture fatigue and mechanics.

Book Synopsis Effect of Temperature and Impurities on Surface Tension of Crude Oil by : Stephen Gekwu Udeagbara
Download or read book Effect of Temperature and Impurities on Surface Tension of Crude Oil written by Stephen Gekwu Udeagbara and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface tension is one of the major issues encountered in the oil industry. This study investigated the laboratory effect of temperature and impurities on surface tension of crude oil samples and water. The aforementioned tests were carried out (in line with industrial standard) on the samples in order to determine the relationship between surface tension, temperature and impurities and also to compare the variation in the measured property due to temperature and impurities. Prediction equations were also built. The results show that surface tension decreases with an increase in temperature in the crude oil samples, water and detergent, while there was an increment in the presence of salt and bentonite as the concentrations increase. We also observed that surface tension increases with water-in-oil emulsion. Also, we see a strong relationship between temperature, impurities and the measured property (surface tension) with an r2 value range of 0.7441 to 0.8638 in all the tests carried out. This study utilized graphic and statistical illustrations to highlight the effect of temperature and impurities on the investigated property and the corresponding effect in the oil industry. The collective and individual relationship between the independent and dependent variable was highlighted and variations were scientifically explained. The prediction equations serve as a quick guide to reservoir engineers to determine the variation in the measured property from other samples of crude oil and water.
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Surface Effects in the Mechanics of Nanomaterials and Heterostructures by : Alan Cocks
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Surface Effects in the Mechanics of Nanomaterials and Heterostructures written by Alan Cocks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Surface Effects in the Mechanics of Nanomaterials and Heterostructures, held in Beijing, 8-12 August, 2010. The symposium brought together the most active scientists working in this area from the fields of solid mechanics, composites, physics, and materials science and summarized the state-of-the-art research results with a view to advancing the frontiers of mechanics and materials physics. Nanomaterials and heterostructures have a large fraction of their atoms at surfaces and interfaces. These atoms see a different environment to those in the interior and can have a substantial effect on the overall mechanical and physical behaviour of a material. The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in the study of surfaces and how the surface behaviour couples with that of the bulk to determine the overall system response. The papers in this proceedings cover: extension of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics to the nano-scale; multiscale simulations; surface effects in monolithic nano-scale elements and nanostructures; mechanical and physical properties of nanomaterials and heterostructures; self-assembly, etc. The surface stress effect is inherently a multidisciplinary and fertile field; the Symposium truly reflects these features. This IUTAM Symposium was also dedicated to Professor Bhushan L Karihaloo of Cardiff University on his impending retirement, in recognition of his contributions to the fields of solid mechanics and nanomechanics, and to IUTAM activities in general.

Book Synopsis Metal Deformation Processing by : F. W. Boulger
Download or read book Metal Deformation Processing written by F. W. Boulger and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Metalworking Processes and Equipment Program, information was collected on deformation characteristics of metals and their effect on processing operations. The report presents the information collected from technical engineering reports on Government contracts and from general engineering and metallurgical publications. The objective is to help the nonspecialist in recognizing the implications of scientific findings and in applying them in specific operations. This report contains a series of articles covering the following subjects: Ductile Fracture; Application of High Pressure to the Forming of Brittle Metals; Superplasticity; Lubrication in Metal-Deformation Processes; Swaging; Adiabatic Conditions in Deformation Processing; Residual Stresses produced by Deformation. These subjects are treated in two ways: (1) generalized discussions of common processes point out why specific variables must be modified in order to deform certain types of metals satisfactorily; and (2) data on the more difficult-to-form metals are used to illustrate the principles, limitations, and effects of the processes. Book Synopsis Surfaces and Interfaces II by : John Burke
Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces II written by John Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgical Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific corr.munity. This volume, Surfaces and Interfaces ll: Physical and Mechanical Properties, can be considered a continuation, or perhaps an extension, of the information contained in Surfaces and Interfaces I: Chemical and Physical Characteristics. The emphasis in this volume is focused on: the technological significance of surfaces and interfaces; surface sensitive mechanical properties; environment-sensitive properties; control of grain structure; and composite materials. It is felt that the rather ambitious undertaking of the program committee to place the role of "surfaces and interfaces" in its proper context has been achieved. The balance between basic research findings and more applied research allows the reader a certain degree of latitude in the use of the two volumes. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Col. C. T. Riordan, Commanding Officer, Dr. E. Scala, Technical Di rector, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center is appreciated.
