Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural The teacher in the medical school teaches physiology and anatomy and hygiene; but when we get sick and send for a doctor, we do not send in order that we may receive a lec ture on physiology or anatomy or hygiene. We send for the doctor that he may use his knowledge of physiology or anatomy or hy giene to make us well. You break a bone you do not want the doctor to tell you about bones, you want him to set the bone. So the object of ministers is not to lecture us on the philosophy of religion; neither is it to ignore the philosophy of religion; it is to use the philosophy of religion to help men and women to live better, nobler, diviner lives. The truth, says Christ, shall make you free. Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. Truth is, then, an instrument. The object of truth is to set men free; it is to sanctify men, to make them holy. The minister who simply expounds the truth does not understand his mission. His mission is so to use truth that men shall be made free; that men shall be made holy. His ministry is, therefore, to be determined by fruits in the life. That is the best sermon, not which is a great pulpit effort, but which is helpful. If, young men, you have preached a sermon and some one comes up to you and says that was a great pulpit effort, hide your head in shame and go home and never write another like it. But if some one comes to you, with a little'quaver in the voice and a little moisture in the eye, and says, Thank you; you have helped me this morning, thank God and go home and try to write another like it. That is the end of preaching - to use theology to help life. The test of the sermon is its fruitfulness in life; and that is the test of theology. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is worth noting first that "modern" in the title of The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction refers to the contemporary times of the author, this book being originally published in 1917. That said, this is a wonderful guide to the supernatural fiction of the times, and perfectly timed to track the evolution towards modern horror fiction. Dorothy Scarborough was a respected academic and writes in an engaging, accessible style. She drew on over three thousand book and short stories in the process of writing this and it is fascinating to see which stories have remained in the public conscious, which have fallen out of favour and which writers from her time which are considered classics now but she did not see fit to mention. The stories are classified by type and discussed as groups, showing the trends of writing in progress. This book is valuable both as an academic work of history, tracking the changing forms of literature but even more so to the horror or supernatural story fan as it will give the background to make your reading that much more satisfying. There is no doubt that after reading this your wishlist of reading will have expanded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She told him that she had been sent by her father, who was a wizard, to roam about the country in the shape of a wolf; and it was evident that the holiness of the hermitage had restored her to human shape. She is cured by the young man, and, a mutual attachment arising, they agree to marry. Before the wedding-day they stroll to look at the place where they originally met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Idea of the Supernatural When a man approaches Christianity from the standpoint of modern thought, he encounters an apparent unreasonable ness. Christianity insists on men believ ing its revelation as the condition of eternal life, but when it is appealed to to prove its revelation, so that a man can believe it, it presents a series of evidences more or less satisfactory, it is true, but not amounting to any absolute demonstration, and, to many honest minds, quite incon clusive. It is thus thrown into the absurd attitude of holding men responsible, under pain of eternal condemnation, When no conclusive evidence is furnished to the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitives and the Supernatural Researches such as these inevitably evoke in the mind vast problems, raised long ago and still vehemently discussed, such as: Have primitives a religion? If so, what? Do they enter tain the idea of a Supreme God? And so forth. These re searches seem indeed to border upon such questions, but they never enter into the discussion. Rightly speaking, they cannot do so, for they are upon another plane altogether. It may possibly be urged that in refusing to pose such prob lems and, as a consequence, to discuss their solution, I am thereby implicitly rejecting certain among them rather than others, and that I thus eliminate them by omission. Not at all. How can I take sides in a debate that I know nothing about? It is not this or that answer to the question that I am avoiding; it is the question itself that I have no right to treat. I could not treat it without abandoning the conception of primitive men tality which I believe to be in conformity with the facts, the method I have followed from the very beginning of these stud ies, and finally, the results which this method has enabled me to Obtain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and the Supernatural In the language of Frederic Harrison, one of the foremost positivists of the day, This method turns aside from hypotheses not to be tested by any known logical canon familiar to science, whether the hypothesis claims support from intuition, aspira tion or general plausibility. And, again, this method turns aside from ideal standards which avow them selves to be lawless, which profess to transcend the field of law. We say, life and conduct shall stand for us wholly on a basis of law, and must rest entirely in that region of science, (not physical, but moral and social science, ) where we are free to use, our intelligence in the methods known to us as ih telligible logic, methods which the intellect can analyze. When you confront us with hypotheses however sublime and however affecting, if they can not be stated in terms of the rest of our knowledge, if they are disparate to that world of sequence and sensation which to us is the ultimate base of all our real knowledge, then we shake our heads and turn aside.
