Book excerpt: This summary is designed to present to the NSLS user community the possible options for wigglers and undulators. The desire is to make it possible for every user to respond to the request by the NSLS for guidance in insertion device development so that it can best serve their scientific interests. There are many options, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as certain restrictions imposed by the parameters of the NSLS storage rings. The NSLS is asking for input in two areas. First, we must decide on the instrumentation to be developed for the high field superconducting wiggler beam lines and for the hybrid permanent magnet wiggler lines. Secondly, the long-range plans for additional insertion devices are now under discussion. Choices must be made between the large number of different magnets which can be built. To facilitate user response, we provide a review of the properties of wigglers and undulators, introducing the basic concepts and defining the fundamental parameters. A detailed account of the brightness of the undulator source is presented and the insertion devices already under construction for the x-ray and VUV rings are discussed. We describe the suitability of certain proposed undulators for the generation of soft x-rays (5 to 50A), and harder x-rays (3 to 12A).

Book excerpt: The superconducting 5 pole, 5 Tesla wiggler which has been operating in the X-17 straight section of the x-ray storage ring at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) since 1989 will soon be replaced by a new wiggler being built by Oxford Instruments with lower operating costs, higher reliability, and greater performance. The new wiggler has three modes of operation: the full wiggler with 11 poles producing 3.0 T, the partial wiggler with 5 poles at 4.7 T, and the wavelength shifter with a single pole producing 5.5 T. The full wiggler, optimized for the digital subtraction radiography program, will produce the same x-ray flux at the 33 KeV iodine K-edge as the existing wiggler operating at 4.7 T but will reduce the higher energy harmonics delivered to the target. The partial wiggler will deliver the same flux for solid state physics experiments as the existing wiggler, and the wavelength shifter will provide an elliptically polarized x-ray beam that is not now available.

Book excerpt: In recent interactions with industrial companies it became quite obvious, that the search for new materials with strong anisotropic properties are of paramount importance for the development of new advanced electronic and magnetic devices. The questions concerning the tailoring of materials with large anisotropic electrical and thermal conductivity were asked over and over again. It became also quite clear that the chance to answer these questions and to find new materials which have these desired properties would demand close collaborations between scientists from different fields. Modem techniques ofcontrolled materials synthesis and advances in measurement and modeling have made clear that multiscale complexity is intrinsic to complex electronic materials, both organic and inorganic. A unified approach to classes of these materials is urgently needed, requiring interdisciplinary input from chemistry, materials science, and solid state physics. Only in this way can they be controlled and exploited for increasingly stringent demands oftechnology. The spatial and temporal complexity is driven by strong, often competing couplings between spin, charge and lattice degrees offreedom, which determine structure-function relationships. The nature of these couplings is a sensitive function of electron-electron, electron-lattice, and spin-lattice interactions; noise and disorder, external fields (magnetic, optical, pressure, etc. ), and dimensionality. In particular, these physical influences control broken-symmetry ground states (charge and spin ordered, ferroelectric, superconducting), metal-insulator transitions, and excitations with respect to broken-symmetries created by chemical- or photo-doping, especially in the form of polaronic or excitonic self-trapping.
