Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the term “Solar System” it is to be understood that an Astronomer, speaking from the standpoint of an inhabitant of the Earth, wishes to refer to that object, the Sun, which is to him the material and visible centre of life and heat and control, and also to those bodies dependent on the Sun which circulate round it at various distances, deriving their light and heat from the Sun, and known as planets and comets. The statement just made may be regarded as a general truth, but as the strictest accuracy on scientific matters is of the utmost importance, a trivial reservation must perhaps be put upon the foregoing broad assertion. There is some reason for thinking that possibly one of the planets (Jupiter) possesses a little inherent light of its own which is not borrowed from the Sun; whilst of the comets it must certainly be said that, as a rule, they shine with intrinsic, not borrowed light. Respecting these reservations more hereafter. The planets are divided into “primary” and “secondary.” By a “primary” planet we mean one which directly circulates round the Sun; by a “secondary” planet we mean one which in the first instance circulates round a primary planet, and therefore only in a secondary sense circulates round the Sun. The planets are also “major” or “minor”; this, however, is only a distinction of size. The secondary planets are usually termed “satellites,” or, very often, in popular language, “moons,” because they own allegiance to their respective primaries just as our Moon—the Moon—does to the Earth. But the use of the term “moon” is inconvenient, and it is better to stick to “satellite.” There is yet another method of classifying the planets which has its advantages. They are sometimes divided into “inferior” and “superior.” The “inferior” planets are those which travel round the Sun in orbits which are inside the Earth’s orbit; the “superior” planets are those whose orbits are outside the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploration of our solar system by spacecraft has been one of the greatest scientific achievements of the twentieth century. The mapping of other worlds has resulted from numerous space missions by NASA, extending over many years. The data from these planetary missions have been synthesised by the US Geological Survey to produce detailed maps. Every planet, moon, or small body investigated in NASA missions is discussed and where appropriate mapped. Geological maps, reference maps, shaded relief maps, synthetic aperture radar mosaics and colour photomosaics marvellously present the features of planets and their satellites. This is truly a 'road map' of our solar system. All maps are fully indexed. The gazetteer lists the names of all features officially approved by the International Astronomical Union. The Compact NASA Atlas of the Solar System is the definitive reference atlas for planetary science.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sun: Its Planets and Their Satellites, a Course of Lectures Upon the Solar System, Read in Gresham College, London, in Years 1881 and 1882, Pursuant to the Will of Sir Thomas Gresham The Lectures contained in this volume have been delivered at gresham college during the last two years. In response to various requests, and by the kind and liberal assistance of the gresham committee of the City of London, to whom the author desires to tender his grateful thanks, they are now published. In the description of the Planets and Satellites which they contain, such information as may be found in almost every astronomical text-book is briefly recapitulated that which is less familiar, or of recent announcement, is discussed more fully. In the case of the Sun and Moon it has only been possible to mention a few points of Special interest. Those who desire fuller information may consult the larger works of Professor Young, Mr. Proctor, and the late Padre Secchi, upon the Sun; of Mr. Neison, Mr. Proctor, and others, upon the Moon. The time and space at the author's disposal have prevented him from making more than a passing reference to the cometary and meteoric members of the Solar System. About 4.6 billion years ago, a swirling gas cloud comprised of carbon dust, hydrogen, helium, water and ice collapsed under its own gravity, creating an enormous explosion the -- a big bang, so to speak. As it contracted, the solar system we know today began to take shape. In The Solar System, readers journey back billions of years, to witness the birth of the planets, stars, and more. This insightful book features the following. * The celestial bodies that make up our fascinating solar system are explored with a team of scientists and experts . * This book offers provocative research of the nine major planets, their largest moons, famous comets and asteroids, and illuminates the amazing details of their creation, development and discovery. * Unique spreads contain detailed descriptions, important data tables, intriguing graphics and lavish artworks of the planets, moons and other key celestial bodies. * Interesting speculation is discussed about the possibility one day -- perhaps in the year 2515 -- of people inhabiting the moon. * Fascinating information and more than 500 spectacular color illustrations and photographs add to this insightful book.
