This was M. Olier's conception o'f the Society; this aim had been constantly kept in view during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and this was the chief end, as M. Emery often emphasized in his letters, for which he sent his Sulpician colony to the United States. We have seen how this scheme originated, how it was favored, nay almost dictated by a variety of circumstances in France and in the United States. We have accompanied the Sulpicians on their voyage to Baltimore, seen them land, and with prompt action establish themselves on the very spot which has been the scene of their devoted labors to this day. We have seen M. Emery's original colony, increased in numbers by new arrivals, we have seen most of these accessions scat tered northward and westward to work as missionaries in the Lord's vineyard. But though necessity knows no law, and though M. Emery as a practical man was ready to give way to necessity, still he always clung with unwavering firmness to his original plan and to the ideals of his Society. The Grant was confirmed afterwards to the whole body of the Sulpicians, of which the Seminary of Montreal was a branch; this was necessary for the pur pose of preserving the subordination which is observed in Ecclesiastical bodies, but did not prevent the Governor and Intendant from regarding the Seminary of Montreal as a body so far legally constituted as to be capable of ing Se1gn10ries. - Its legal existence is also proved Ordinances concerning Mortmain, made in 1732 and having been formally notified to the Seminary of Mo (our Archives) which was therefrom considered as holdi property in Mortmain, as a community. Having received the rudiments of his education and studied the classics, he felt himself called to the sacred ministry, and entered the seminary at Angers, where he completed his course Of theology. He next went to Issy, a seminary of the Sulpicians, outside the city Of Paris, where candi dates for the priesthood are sent to make their immediate preparation for the reception of Holy Orders. The church owes much to the Society of St. Sulpice, a body of secular priests, founded in Paris by the saintly Monsieur J ean-j acques Olier, in the year 1645, principally for the purpose of educating students for the priesthood. In 1791, at the time of Rev. Gabriel Richard's elevation to the sacred ministry, his native country was in the depth of the Reign of Terror, and the most zealous had to hide their time in silent resignation. The three associates Of Father N agot were Fathers Garnier, Levadoux, and Tessier. Father An toine Garnier was then 29 years Old. He had taught divinity with great success in the Seminary of Lyons, and was a remarkable linguist. Father Michel Leva doux had been for many years a director of the Semi nary Of Bourges. Father Jean Tessier, born in 1758 in the diocese of Angers, had taught theology for two years at Viviers, when, in 1791, he was invited by Father Emery to join this little band. In order that the projected Seminary might be Opened immediately, five Seminarians accompanied the pioneer Sulpicians. The travelers having chartered an American vessel, sailed from St. Malo in the month of March, and reached Baltimore July l0th, 1791. On the same ship there was a young Frenchman, then misled by Vol tairian infidelity, but who, later on, consecrating his brilliant imagination and fascinating style to the service Of religion, rendered illustrious the name of Chateau briand.
