Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States Catholic Historical Society, Vol. 8: Historical Records and Studies As we have seen, the essential purpose of the Society of St. Sulpice from the beginning was the education of the secular clergy, and the management of clerical seminaries. This was M. Olier's conception o'f the Society; this aim had been constantly kept in view during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and this was the chief end, as M. Emery often emphasized in his letters, for which he sent his Sulpician colony to the United States. We have seen how this scheme originated, how it was favored, nay almost dictated by a variety of circumstances in France and in the United States. We have accompanied the Sulpicians on their voyage to Baltimore, seen them land, and with prompt action establish themselves on the very spot which has been the scene of their devoted labors to this day. We have seen M. Emery's original colony, increased in numbers by new arrivals, we have seen most of these accessions scat tered northward and westward to work as missionaries in the Lord's vineyard. But though necessity knows no law, and though M. Emery as a practical man was ready to give way to necessity, still he always clung with unwavering firmness to his original plan and to the ideals of his Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Historical Researches, Vol. 3: October, 1886 Gabriel Richard was born of respectable and pious parents, at Saintes, in France, on the 15th of October, 1764, his mother, it is said, being a relative of the illustrious Bossuet. Having received the rudiments of his education and studied the classics, he felt himself called to the sacred ministry, and entered the seminary at Angers, where he completed his course Of theology. He next went to Issy, a seminary of the Sulpicians, outside the city Of Paris, where candi dates for the priesthood are sent to make their immediate preparation for the reception of Holy Orders. The church owes much to the Society of St. Sulpice, a body of secular priests, founded in Paris by the saintly Monsieur J ean-j acques Olier, in the year 1645, principally for the purpose of educating students for the priesthood. In 1791, at the time of Rev. Gabriel Richard's elevation to the sacred ministry, his native country was in the depth of the Reign of Terror, and the most zealous had to hide their time in silent resignation. The superior-general of the Sulpicians, the Abbe Emery, determined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Far-reaching changes continue to take place in the American priesthood. Building on insights gained from four previous surveys, Same Call, Different Men uses fresh data from a 2009 survey-jointly implemented by the National Federation of Priest's Councils and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate-in which 900 priests shared attitudes and stories about their lives and ministry. Among topics covered are the challenges of ministry with fewer ordinations and larger parishes, ministering to an increasingly multicultural laity, collaboration with lay leaders, and personal reflections on the sexual abuse issue. It also relates the many satisfactions of being a priest, one who brings Christ to others and who is invited into many profound moments of individual lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Volume of the Centenary of St. Mary's Seminary of St. Sulpice, Baltimore, MD., 1791-1891 Theological Seminary, in Paris. Among those who had selected him as their spiritual guide, it may be interesting to mention that celebrated Irish priest, the Abbe Edgeworth, who attended Louis XVI at the scaffold.' The three associates Of Father N agot were Fathers Garnier, Levadoux, and Tessier. Father An toine Garnier was then 29 years Old. He had taught divinity with great success in the Seminary of Lyons, and was a remarkable linguist. Father Michel Leva doux had been for many years a director of the Semi nary Of Bourges. Father Jean Tessier, born in 1758 in the diocese of Angers, had taught theology for two years at Viviers, when, in 1791, he was invited by Father Emery to join this little band. In order that the projected Seminary might be Opened immediately, five Seminarians accompanied the pioneer Sulpicians. The travelers having chartered an American vessel, sailed from St. Malo in the month of March, and reached Baltimore July l0th, 1791. On the same ship there was a young Frenchman, then misled by Vol tairian infidelity, but who, later on, consecrating his brilliant imagination and fascinating style to the service Of religion, rendered illustrious the name of Chateau briand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few today would contest that the priesthood is in a state of crisis. The nature and implications of that crisis, however, remain the subject of considerable discussion and debate. In The Changing Face of the Priesthood, Fr. Donald Cozzens offers insight into the crisis by reflecting on the issues, challenges, concerns, and realities of the priesthood today. The same year that Pope John XXIII surprised the Catholic world with his call for an ecumenical council, Cozzens began his formal study of theology. As a seminarian he felt the shaking of the priesthood's foundations. The very face of the priesthood was evolving even as he arrived at his first parish assignment. A generation later, the face of the priesthood continues to reveal new contours, fascinating features, and sadly, some tragic blemishes. In The Changing Face of the Priesthood, Cozzens takes a long, honest look at the present state of the priesthood. He provides this examination not merely from an empirical, scientific perspective but also from a personal, pastoral perspective. Drawing on clinical data, church documents, and his nearly forty years of pastoral experience, Cozzens gives shape and form to the changing face of the priesthood. Through his reflections he leads readers to both concern and hope for the priesthood of the twenty-first century. Chapters are Discovering an Identity," *Guarding One's Integrity, - *Loving as a Celibate, - *Facing the Unconscious, - *Becoming a Man, - *Tending the Word, - *Considering Orientation, - *Betraying Our Young, - and *The Changing Face of the Priesthood. - Donald Cozzens, PhD, a priest and writer, is author of two award-winning titles, Sacred Silence and The Changing Face of the Priesthood, and editor of The Spirituality of the Diocesan Priest, all published by Liturgical Press. He is writer in residence at John Carroll University where he teaches in the religious studies department. "
