Book excerpt: Strategic alliances offer organisations an alternative to organic growth or acquisition when faced with the need to develop the business to a new level, innovate in terms of products or services or significantly reduce costs. The Strategic Alliance Handbook is a clear and complete guide to the nuts and bolts of the process behind successful collaborations. The book enables readers to understand the commercial, technical, strategic, cultural and operational logic behind any alliance and to establish an approach that is appropriate for the type of alliance they are seeking and the partner organisation(s) with whom they are working. Whether you are an alliance executive, responsible for the systems, strategy and performance of your organisation's alliancing programme or an alliance manager needing to ensure the success of a given partnership, The Strategic Alliance Handbook is an essential guide.

Download or read book In Doubt written by Dan Simon and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The criminal justice process is unavoidably human. Police detectives, witnesses, suspects, and victims shape the course of investigations, while prosecutors, defense attorneys, jurors, and judges affect the outcome of adjudication. In this sweeping review of psychological research, Dan Simon shows how flawed investigations can produce erroneous evidence and why well-meaning juries send innocent people to prison and set the guilty free. The investigator’s task is genuinely difficult and prone to bias. This often leads investigators to draw faulty conclusions, assess suspects’ truthfulness incorrectly, and conduct coercive interrogations that can lead to false confessions. Eyewitnesses’ identification of perpetrators and detailed recollections of criminal events rely on cognitive processes that are often mistaken and can easily be skewed by the investigative procedures used. In the courtroom, jurors and judges are ill-equipped to assess the accuracy of testimony, especially in the face of the heavy-handed rhetoric and strong emotions that crimes arouse. Simon offers an array of feasible ways to improve the accuracy of criminal investigations and trials. While the limitations of human cognition will always be an obstacle, these reforms can enhance the criminal justice system’s ability to decide correctly whom to release and whom to punish.
Book Synopsis Proportionality and Facts in Constitutional Adjudication by : Anne Carter
Download or read book Proportionality and Facts in Constitutional Adjudication written by Anne Carter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the relationship between proportionality and facts in constitutional adjudication. Analysing where facts arise within each of the three stages of the structured proportionality test – suitability, necessity, and balancing – it considers the nature of these 'facts' vis-à-vis the facts that arise in the course of ordinary litigation. The book's central focus is on how proportionality has been applied by courts in practice, and it draws on the comparative experience of four jurisdictions across a range of legal systems. The central case study of the book is Australia, where the embryonic and contested nature of proportionality means it provides an illuminating study of how facts can inform the framing of constitutional tests. The rich proportionality jurisprudence from Germany, Canada, and South Africa is used to contextualise the approach of the High Court of Australia and to identify future directions for proportionality in Australia, at a time when the doctrine is in its formative stages. The book has three broad aims: First, it considers the role of facts within proportionality reasoning. Second, it offers procedural insights into fact-finding in constitutional litigation. Third, the book's analysis of the dynamic Australian case-law on proportionality means it also serves to clarify the nature and status of proportionality in Australia at a critical moment. Since the 2015 decision of McCloy v New South Wales, where four justices supported the introduction of a structured three-part test of proportionality, the Court has continued to disagree about the utility of such a test. These developments mean that this book, with its doctrinal and comparative approach, is particularly timely.

Book Synopsis Civic Engagement by : Robin G. Milne
Download or read book Civic Engagement written by Robin G. Milne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civic engagement in this book is understood to include attendance at booked National Health Service appointments; compulsory attendance at school; the take-up of a variety of State benefits in cash and kind, such as Pension Credit and free school meals; and attendance at work. This book is the outcome of a collaborative exercise, in which specialists in a variety of disciplines have come together to better understand the state of civic engagement in the fields of health, education, social security, and employment. Their research is drawn primarily from the British experience, but the phenomena studied are international in scope. Generally, civic engagement has been improving, but in certain areas there are serious gaps that still need addressing. Administrative arrangements are shown to reduce absence for booked appointments, without necessarily making referred patients more or less likely to attend. A variety of measures are suggested for truancy, and the take-up of social security benefits faces a number of issues. Work absence attributed to sickness is at least partly viewed as a psychosocial problem. Economic analysis shows the importance of incentives, and the potential cost of changing from selective to the universal provision of free school meals. Taken together, the sociological analysis in the book highlights the fragmentation of society and its consequences for civic engagement. This book was originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social Science.

Book Synopsis Analysis of the mechanical performance of pin-reinforced sandwich structures by : Mohamed Adli Dimassi
Download or read book Analysis of the mechanical performance of pin-reinforced sandwich structures written by Mohamed Adli Dimassi and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rising demand to reduce fuel consumption and the continuous increase of materials and manufacturing costs has obliged aircraft manufacturers to boost the use of composite materials and to optimise the manufacturing methods. Foam core sandwich structures combine the advantages of high bending properties with low manufacturing costs when liquid composite processes are used. However, the use of foam core sandwich structures is not widespread in aircraft applications due to the better weight-specific performance of honeycomb cores and the susceptibility to impact loading. In this context, pin reinforcements are added to the foam core to improve its mechanical properties and its damage tolerance. This work contributes to the understanding of the mechanical behaviour of pin-reinforced foam core sandwich structures under static and impact loading. Ultrasonic scan and micro-computed tomography are used to identify the different damage modes. The effect of very low temperature on the damage behaviour under impact loading is investigated. An explicit simulation model to predict the impact response of pin-reinforced foam core sandwich structures is also proposed.

Book Synopsis Electrochemistry of N4 Macrocyclic Metal Complexes by : Jose H. Zagal
Download or read book Electrochemistry of N4 Macrocyclic Metal Complexes written by Jose H. Zagal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition describes the state of the art regarding metal complexes of N4-ligands, such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines. Volume 2 focuses on the electro assisted use of N4 complexes as biomimetic models for studying several biological redox processes. It focuses on molecular oxygen transport and catalytic activation to mimic monooxygenase enzymes of the cytochrome P450 in particular. It also examines N4 complexes’ use as catalysts for the oxidative degradation of various types of pollutants (organo-halides, for example) and residual wastes. The remarkable activity of these complexes towards a large number of significantly relevant biological compounds makes them excellent candidates as electrode modifiers for electrochemical sensing. This volume also discusses applications of N4 Macrocyclic Metal Complexes to photoelectrochemistry and photocatalysis, and concludes with an exciting section on Electrosynthesis of N4.
