Book Synopsis Coastal and Estuarine Management by : Peter French
Download or read book Coastal and Estuarine Management written by Peter French and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coast cannot be left to nature to determine its fate. Wealth, property, economic interests, recreation, tourism and wildlife are all threatened. Coasts are an administrative battle ground and one of the most important and widely examined topics in environmental management. Coastal and Estuarine Management examines the issues surrounding the human use and abuse of estuarine and coastal environments. Emphasising the importance and significance of this natural resource, the uses and conflicts which occur and the results of human activity, this book explains the ways in which conservation and management policies and practices can protect this productive and diverse ecosystem. Examples and real-life case studies illustrate the effect of human intervention, both from an historic and contemporary perspective. Exposing the environmental consequences of estuarine pollution, Peter French highlights the need for management strategies to promote a sustainable development ethic for estuaries.

Book Synopsis A Rehabilitated Estuarine Ecosystem by : Martin J. Attrill
Download or read book A Rehabilitated Estuarine Ecosystem written by Martin J. Attrill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well documented history of pollution and recovery in the Thames Estuary has made the system one of the world's most famous case studies. However, the story is incomplete in terms of the status of the rehabilitated ecosystem resulting from the remedial management policies. What ecosystem might we expect to recover from a once lifeless estuary? have the extensive efforts made by policy makers, environmental managers and scientists resulted in a diverse, complex estuary that may be a model for other systems? This book draws together many detailed aspects of the recovering Thames Estuary ecosystem from environmental management and scientific sources. The result is probably the most comprehensive account of the management and ecology of a single estuarine system yet produced. It includes important and extensive long term studies of the fish communities, water quality and management policy, spatial accounts along the full length of the estuary for benthic invertebrates and algae, significant case studies on zooplankton, saltmarshes and parasitology, as well as an overview looking forward to the next millennium. Altogether, this study of the long term ecological consequences of management policy provides a benchmark for comparison with other estuarine ecosystems, both `natural' and rehabilitated, and forms a unique and valuable reference for environmental managers, estuarine scientists and ecologists.
Book Synopsis Wetland Management by : R. A. Falconer
Download or read book Wetland Management written by R. A. Falconer and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1994 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been growing concern about the management of wetlands, particularly in the USA and increasingly in Europe. These wetlands, ranging from a small harbour, such as Christchurch in the UK, to the large mangrove swamps of Malaysia, are natural resources which require comprehensive management. Whilst considerable research has been undertaken and documented on the management of wetland ecosystems, little emphasis has been focused on the geomorphic, hydraulic and hydrologic behaviour of wetlands and the consequent implications for practical management solutions.

Book excerpt: East Anglia has long been known for its internationally significant cultural and environmental Palaeolithic archaeology, often overshadowing the potential of its Holocene resource. This volume details the results of 8 years of palaeoenvironmental, archaeological and geoarchaeological investigations focused on the post-glacial history and evolution of the Suffolk river valleys, funded by Historic England and a number of commercial developers. The volume illustrates the largely untapped research potential of the region and provides information concerning the timing, pattern and process of alluvial development, landscape change, and human activity. The highlight of these investigations was the excavation and associated analyses of three well-preserved later prehistoric timber alignments and their environmental records, discovered during flood alleviation works on the floodplain of the lower Waveney Valley. As well as documenting these internationally significant remains, the research described includes innovative approaches to wetland archaeological and palaeoenvironmental study, highlighting important methodological considerations with respect to radiocarbon dating and chronology, applying novel geophysical approaches to site prospection, and recording wooden artefacts using 3-D laser scanning. The volume also discusses the results of groundwater monitoring of sediments containing the late prehistoric timber alignment at Beccles and considers the longer-term preservation potential of these fragile remains, which – as with other wetland archaeological sites – are at ever increasing risk from development pressures, as well as the longer term impacts of climate and environmental change.
