In this descriptive study, the experiences, attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions that rural instrumental music educators held about their schools, students, and communities were investigated. Furthermore, the researcher examined how rural secondary instrumental music educators defined success for their programs, what challenges and rewards they experienced in their positions, and what skills from a pre-determined list (Fitzpatrick, 2008) they considered to be most important in their classrooms.

Book excerpt: In education policy, research, and reform, rural education spaces are often an afterthought, if included at all (Azano et al., 2021; McShane & Smarick, 2018; Tieken, 2014). Music education research has followed a similar trend, with scholarly efforts directed toward school districts with greater resources or addressing racial equity while excluding rural music programs (Bates, 2011). To bring rural music education into discussions of music education for all, there is a need to understand what rural spaces are and how rural communities and music programs interact. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning and value of elementary music in rural communities. Specific research questions were: 1) How do students, music teachers, administrators, and caregivers in rural communities view their elementary music programs, and what meanings do these stakeholders construct? 2) In what ways do elementary music teachers connect with and respond to their communities? I designed and completed an instrumental multiple case study (Stake, 1995; Yin, 2018) that included elementary school music programs. Primary participants were rural three elementary music teachers representing different geographic areas of the United States. Additional participants included students in third through fifth grade, elementary administrators, secondary music teachers (where available) and caregivers. I conducted three interviews with each elementary music teacher as well as a week-long residence at each site. I interviewed administrators and secondary music teachers. I conducted focus group sessions with caregivers and students. I generated field notes, thick descriptions, and researcher memos. Throughout design, data collection and analysis, I utilized social constructivism with a focus on meaning making (Charmaz, 2014; Hayes, 2020) as my theoretical framework. I analyzed the data and generated case descriptions, then conducted a cross-case analysis. My cross-case analysis revealed shared and unique values of the elementary music program. Participants highlighted music enjoyment, music as a social connection, and the music teacher and important. I observed several hierarchies being enacted within the school and community impacting the music program, including suburbanormative biases and the subordinate status of elementary music. Music teachers worked to navigate community perceptions of music benefits, such as academic support, emotional regulation, and preparation for secondary ensembles. Participants described the connections their elementary music program created and engaged with place as a locale and a physical location. Based on the findings from each case and my cross-case analysis, I presented several implications for practice and policy, including a closer examination of the definition of musical success, further investigation into the wants and needs of rural elementary music educators, and the importance of soliciting essential voices in music education research.
Book Synopsis A Study on Factors that Influence Instrumental Music Programs in Secondary Schools by : Charles B. Evans
Download or read book A Study on Factors that Influence Instrumental Music Programs in Secondary Schools written by Charles B. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors previously associated with challenges facing in-service instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina. Two research questions guided the study: 1) How do instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina rate factors that may influence their programs? and 2) To what extent are the following factors relevant to instrumental music educators: school size, student involvement, geographic location, budget, and support? The Rural Instrumental Music Teacher Survey was constructed by the researcher using a five point Likert-type scale. The 38-item questionnaire was distributed to 84 instrumental music educators in northwest North Carolina, of which, 56 were returned and used for analysis (N=56). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the questionnaire data. Results from the data suggest that class offerings are perceived to be adequate within perspective schools, but scheduling conflicts are rated as problematic, and to a greater extent with educators who are service multiple schools. Regardless of school size, instrumental music educators choose to participate in large ensemble adjudicated events, with a less clear picture of school participation in small ensemble or solo events. All survey participants agreed they have high student participation in other school and community extra-curricular activities. Geographic location was rated as less of a hindrance for access to music retailers than it was for access to university outreach. Budget considerations received inconclusive results. Music educators valued the support received from all sources and deemed them important to the overall success of the music program; the perceived amount of support received was strongest from parents and school level administration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers chapters written by some of the most respected narrative and qualitative inquiry writers in the field of music education. The authorship and scope are international, and the chapters advance the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological bases of narrative inquiry in music education and the arts. The book contains two sections, each with a specific aim. The first is to continue and expand upon dialogue regarding narrative inquiry in music education, emphasizing how narrative involves the art of listening to and hearing others whose voices are often unheard. The chapters invite music teachers and scholars to experience and confront music education stories from multiple perspectives and worldviews, inviting an international readership to engage in critical dialogue with and about marginalized voices in music. The second section focuses on ways in which narrative might be represented beyond the printed page, such as with music, film, photography, and performative pieces. This section includes philosophical discussions about arts-based and aesthetic inquiry, as well as examples of such work.

Download or read book A Case Study of an Instrumental Music Program and Its Influence on the Culture of a School written by Anthony Terence Womack and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to examine how participation in a school-based instrumental music program contributed to the culture of a suburban high school. The questions guiding the research were: (1) How and why are multiple music programs supported by staff, students, parents and the community at this school? (2) What are the benefits of maintaining a music curriculum at the school? A single-site case study was conducted at Bigrock High School, a suburban public school in an area outside a major Mid-Atlantic city. The case study utilized in-depth interviews of students, parents, teachers, school administrator and members of the community as data sources. A content analysis of these interviews provided insight into perceptions and beliefs that stakeholders have about the value of students performing in musical ensembles at this research site. Three strands of literature helped frame the content analysis, namely self-efficacy, social capital, and the implementation of music schools. Findings from this study can provide useful ideas on how schools with fewer resources can benefit from having a music program at their site. This includes investigating programs that support the arts in and outside of schools. Future research can focus on schools with smaller music programs and investigate ideas on becoming larger. Additionally, future research can be centered on the level of musical influence to children whose parents/guardians also played a musical instrument.

Book excerpt: Trying to understand the complex interplay between effective learning and personal experience is one of the main challenges for instrumental music education. Much of the research that focuses on effective learning outcomes often adopts experimental methodologies that do not allow for a thorough examination of the subjective and social processes that accompany each student's musical journey; on the contrary, contributions dedicated to the detailed analysis of the learners' lived experience often do not offer generalizable outcomes to different types of learning and teaching.
