Book Synopsis Miscellaneous Writings by : John Stuart Mill
Download or read book Miscellaneous Writings written by John Stuart Mill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1989-12-15 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interests and activities of John Stuart Mill (1806–73) were so wide-ranging that even the varied subjects of thirty previously published volumes of Collected Works cannot encompass them all. In this volume are brought together diverse and interesting instances of his polymathic career, none before republished and some previously unpublished. Neatly framing Mill’s writing career are his editorial prefaces and extensive notes to Jeremy Bentham;s Rationale of Judicial Evidence (1827) and James Mill’s Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind (1869). Both demonstrate his extraordinary powers of mind and diligence as well as his fealty. His constant avocation, field botany, is shown in his botanical writings, which open a window on an almost unknown activity that sustained and delighted him. Brief comments on two medical works hint at another interest. Two articles of which he was co-author demonstrate his work as editor of the London and Westminster Review, and a calendar of his contributions to the Political Economy Club provides yet another glimpse into his chosen activities and concerns. Published for the first time are Mill’s English and French wills, providing still further biographical detail.
Book Synopsis Medicine, Madness and Social History by : R. Bivins
Download or read book Medicine, Madness and Social History written by R. Bivins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in honour of eminent historian Roy Porter by twenty of his colleagues and students, the collection renders cutting edge scholarship accessible. Historians from the three fields that Porter made his own - the histories of medicine, madness, and the Enlightenment - illustrate his influence while tackling major themes ranging from disability rights to the popularization of science. In their accounts, artisan gardeners jostle with anarchists, dentists, and hypnotists in a lively, and very Porterian, parade.

Book Synopsis Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill on Sexual Equality by : Vincent Guillin
Download or read book Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill on Sexual Equality written by Vincent Guillin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent Guillin uses the issue of sexual equality as a prism through which to examine important differences – epistemological, methodological and theoretical – between Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill. He succeeds in showing how their differing conceptions of science and human nature influence and affect their respective approaches to philosophy and to the analysis of female (in)equality in particular. Guillin shines a bright searchlight into long-neglected aspects of both men’s thinking – for example, Mill’s proposal to construct an ‘ethology’, or science of character-formation, and Comte’s seemingly bizarre interest in phrenology – and the ways in which these shaped their views of women’s intellectual and political capacities. Guillin’s wide-ranging study examines both men’s major and minor works, their correspondence with one another, and the reasons for the final acrimonious break between two of the nineteenth century’s most original and important thinkers.

Book excerpt: The Poetics of Palliation argues that Romanticism developed richer literary therapies than its contemporary reception remembers. By reading Romantic writers against Georgian medical ethics, Poetics recovers their models of literature as comfort and sustenance, challenging a health humanities tradition that sees literary therapy primarily as cure.
Book Synopsis History, Humanity and Evolution by : James Richard Moore
Download or read book History, Humanity and Evolution written by James Richard Moore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, Humanity and Evolution brings together thirteen original essays by prominent scholars in the history of evolutionary thought. The volume is intended both to represent the best of today's research in the field and also to celebrate the work of the distinguished historian, John C. Greene, whose historical writings have had a unique influence on this volume's contributors as well as the field as a whole. Using contemporary sources as diverse as medicine, literature, and natural history tableaux, and drawing on the resources of publishing history, feminist scholarship, and the histories of politics, sociology, and philosophy, the contributors offer new perspectives not only on familiar figures such as Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Lamarck, Chambers, Huxley, and Haeckel, but also on many lesser known participants in the evolutionary debates. The volume contains a fascinating introductory conversation with John C. Greene and an afterword by him that responds to the contributors' essays.
