Book excerpt: The forty-five sermons collected in Volume 3 were composed and first delivered between October 1830 and November 1831. During that time Emerson's first wife, Ellen Tucker Emerson, died of tuberculosis, a loss that deeply affected Emerson. Transcribed and edited from manuscripts in Harvard's University's Houghton Library, the sermons are presented in a clear text approximating as nearly as possible the original version delivered to Emerson's congregation. As well as the detailed chronology, explanatory footnotes, and textual endnotes found in previous volumes, this one contains a comprehensive index.

Book excerpt: "Emerson was very much a person of his era, but his thought is timeless because it partakes of the perennial wisdom that has permeated philosophy and religion in every age and culture. Emerson continues to be relevant because, as he said of himself, 'I am an endless seeker with no past at my back.' Spiritual seekers of this and coming ages will continue to find in Emerson a kindred soul." - from the Introduction Master of the aphorism, Emerson is the most quoted of all American writers. Yet there have been few anthologies of Emerson's sayings and none quite like this one. Drawing from all of Emerson - his early sermons and lectures, his journals, his many books and essays, and his poetry -this unique book of thoughtfully selected passages captures the many textures and nuances of this exceptional mind. We find a spiritual message at the heart of his philosophy. Emerson's spiritual vision is reflected in these selections, the most relevant writings for today's spiritual seekers. This meditation collection will provide an opportunity to celebrate and re-evaluate Emerson's contribution to America's spiritual history. The depth and breadth of Emerson's words will show a new generation of Americans how to bring an open heart and a critical mind to the spiritual search.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited final volumes of Emerson's lectures The past several decades have witnessed an extraordinary editorial reconstruction of the life and influence of Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of America's foremost writers and intellectuals. By drawing primarily from previously unpublished manuscripts in the Ralph Waldo Emerson Memorial Association Collection in the Houghton Library at Harvard University, recent editions of Emerson's correspondence, journals and notebooks, sermons, and early lectures have provided authoritative texts that inspire readers to consider Emerson's place in American culture afresh. Drawn from the last untapped body of Emerson's manuscripts, The Later Lectures of Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1843-1871 presents the texts of forty-seven complete and unpublished lectures that Emerson delivered during the crucial middle years of his career. They offer Emerson's thoughts on subjects that occupied him throughout his life - New England and Old World history and culture, poetic theory, education, the history and uses of intellect - as well as his ideas on subjects that sparked as many debates in the nineteenth century as they do today - race relations and women's rights. Book excerpt: This critical analysis identifies the different rhetorical strategies and techniques that Emerson used first as a traditional New England preacher and then as he became a widely renowned public lecturer. Ten texts illustrating his different kinds of speeches on a wide array of subjects, such as prayer, manners, eloquence, the American scholar, the genuine man, and the fugitive slave law, accompany the analysis. A speech chronology and bibliography pointing to important primary and secondary materials further enrich this Great American Orators reference tool for students, scholars, and professionals in rhetoric, history, and American studies.
Book Synopsis The Strains of Eloquence by : Wesley T. Mott
Download or read book The Strains of Eloquence written by Wesley T. Mott and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson were central to his emergence as thinker and writer. This is the first extended study of the formative role of these long-neglected documents. Wesley Mott explores major topics and issues in Emerson scholarship: his vocational self-image; the significance and meaning of such quintessentially Emersonian concepts as self-reliance, the over-soul, and compensation; his sense of language his vision of America; his relation to Puritanism. Emerson's aphorisms, taken out of context, have enabled readers of every stamp to enlist him in their cause. Reformers, on the one hand, have claimed him as a prophet of social change, while, on the other hand, Henry Ford and Woody Hayes have found him a champion of conservative American values. These seemingly contradictory elements can be reconciled in large part by an understanding of Emerson's roots in "liberal Christianity" and of his lifelong religious habits of mind. Instead of regarding Emerson's career as a series of distinct stages (as Stephen Whicker did in Freedom and Fate), Mott emphasizes the essential continuity of his growth. David Robinson has so viewed Emerson's career as preacher and lecturer in Apostle of Culture (1982).Mott's study emphasizes the dynamics of specific sermons (mostly previously unpublished) and their role in shaping Emerson's understanding of major issues in his life of the mind. The book anticipates publication of The Complete Sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson, to be issued by the University of Missouri Press, 1989-92.
