She wanted “to awaken sympathy and feeling for the African race [...]” (xiii). Stowe is more precise in her preface to A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin where she defines her goal of writing “to bring this subject of slavery, as a moral and religious question, before the minds of all those who profess to be followers of Christ in this country” (Stowe qtd. in Nuernberg 44). Stowe was successful and her sentimental novel reached the hearts of millions of readers and brought “[...] grown men to their emotional knees” (Yarborough 62). The novel did not only touch of the heart of the readers, it had as well political effects which can be underlined by the fact that Abraham Lincoln claimed that Stowe had caused the Civil War. This is one of the reasons why Josephine Donovan describes Uncle Tom’s Cabin as “probably the most influential novel ever written” (Donovan 11). This paper will deal with another level of the novel’s influence. In the Longman Dictionary the term “Uncle Tom” is defined as “a black person who is too respectful to white person”. This definition is an evidence for the fact that Uncle Tom “entered the stock of American cultural archetypes” (Yarborough 53). The label “Uncle Tom” has even become “an index for racial degradation” (Railton 104). This paper focuses on the contradiction between Stowe’s antislavery conviction and “her tendency to see characters as representatives types” (Donovan 49) of different races.

In the nineteenth century it sold more copies than any book in the world except the Bible and became "the most cussed and discussed book of its time" 1. While in the 1850s slavery opponents hailed Stowe's novel as "the greatest weapon ever brought to bear in the abolitionist battle" 2, it was a hundred years later exposed to immense criticism, especially on the part of the blacks. Like Edmund Wilson reports, "it was still possible at the beginning of this century for a South Carolina teacher to make his pupils hold up their right hands and swear that they would never read Uncle Tom" 3. This research paper is intended to focus on why the reactions to this novel were so contradictory. After going into the general ideas of ‘race’ at Stowe's time, it will give an account of which attitudes towards this topic the writer herself expresses in Uncle Tom's Cabin and how these reply to the view of her contemporaries. George, upon being deprived from his privileged work in a factory by his brutal owner, decides to flee to Canada to seek his freedom. Shortly after the escape of George, Eliza, together with her toddler son Harry, also decides to escape from the Shelby farm. Her resolve to escape is based on Mr. Shelby’s deal with the salve trader Haley, who forced Mr. Shelby to sell him Harry together with Tom. After surviving lots of perils on their escapes, George, Eliza and Harry are reunited. They reach Canada and freedom, spend 4 years in France, get another child- little Eliza, and finally go back to their ‘roots’ -to Africa/ Liberia. The story or more correctly the depiction of George and Eliza Harris as a ‘perfect white Anglo-Saxon middle class family of the 19thcentury’ will be the topic of this term paper. The description of blacks or mulattoes in terms of white categories was quite a novelty in a time in which blacks were often considered as: [...]”child/savage”in counterpoint to their[whites]own self-image: The antithesis of themselves and of what they value, he lacked “incentive to industry,” “moral restraint,” the principle of “accumulation” and control over the “animal part” of man. (Takaki 1979: 126) Racial stereotypes in 19thcentury America will be further discussed in chapter 2. Chapter 3 will focus on white Anglo-Saxon gender and family concepts. Chapter 4 will present a detailed discussion on how Mrs. Stowe uses these concepts in the description of the mulattoes Eliza and George Harris. Chapter 5 will sum up the discussions of this term paper.

Aiken’s play Uncle Tom’s Cabin considering the question of the usage of racial stereotypes. The subject will be introduced by quoting a German newspaper headline that stirred a controversy and reflects on how Uncle Tom’s Cabin and especially the perception of racial stereotypes had an impact to this day. Here it will also be stated how the meaning attributed to the character has gone through a major change since its creation. In the following paragraph the origins of the story will shortly be described, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel of the same title, her background, her motivations and the ambivalence of opposing slavery on the one hand while using und thus reinforcing racial stereotypes on the other. The next paragraph will show that the same can be said of Aiken who used the novel as the basis for his play shortly after it was published and adopted Stowe’s stereotypes on a large scale. This will be demonstrated on the example of the supposed “religious spirit” of Uncle Tom by taking a closer look at his religious beliefs and his “child-like faith” in the different scenes of the play. Here it becomes particularly interesting how he relates to white adults, respective the discrepancy demonstrated between him and people his own age on the one hand, while the affinity of his mind to the one of children on the other. The closing statements will include an interpretation and analysis of the representation of Uncle Tom in Aiken’s play especially in terms of Tom’s Christianity. This is meant to discover whether he is only that child-like spirited slave or only a tragic hero or whether his personality is more complex and one should use more then a few words for describing his character.

In so doing, she presents different types of femininity and masculinity which help to point out the nature of the system of slavery. Generally speaking, women in Beecher Stowe’s work present abolitionist ideas stating the evil of the system whereas the depiction of male characters is more complex. This paper seeks to examine the types of masculinity in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, distinguishing between good and bad, black and white masculinity embodied in the characterization of the characters. Masculinity has always been associated with physical strength and muscles, toughness and power but most of all courage. This paper, however, will not only address masculinity as such but will also show that masculinity is courage by softness and religious faith. Harriet Beecher Stowe disguises variations of masculinity in her characters: Bad white masculinity is depicted in the behavior of the plantation owner Simon Legree in contrast to the Kentuckian Mr. Shelby and Mr. Augustine St. Clare from New Orleans who imply good white masculinity. The latter two may depict an intermediate position between bad white and black masculinity presented by the slaves Uncle Tom and George Harris. Since Uncle Tom’s Cabin is considered to be a novel in favor of the abolition of slavery, black masculinity is unlikely to be presented badly. This paper therefore focuses on the above-mentioned characters and how they present different types of masculinity, also in relation to how they treat other human beings.

Both images have long been burned into the American conscience through popular entertainment, and today they exert a powerful and disturbing influence on Americans' understanding of race. So argues Linda Williams in this boldly inquisitive book, where she probes the bitterly divisive racial sentiments aroused by such recent events as O. J. Simpson's criminal trial. Williams, the author of Hard Core, explores how these images took root, beginning with melodramatic theater, where suffering characters acquire virtue through victimization. The racial sympathies and hostilities that surfaced during the trial of the police in the beating of Rodney King and in the O. J. Simpson murder trial are grounded in the melodramatic forms of Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Birth of a Nation. Williams finds that Stowe's beaten black man and Griffith's endangered white woman appear repeatedly throughout popular entertainment, promoting interracial understanding at one moment, interracial hate at another. The black and white racial melodrama has galvanized emotions and fueled the importance of new media forms, such as serious, "integrated" musicals of stage and film, including The Jazz Singer and Show Boat. It also helped create a major event out of the movie Gone With the Wind, while enabling television to assume new moral purpose with the broadcast of Roots. Williams demonstrates how such developments converged to make the televised race trial a form of national entertainment. When prosecutor Christopher Darden accused Simpson's defense team of "playing the race card," which ultimately trumped his own team's gender card, he feared that the jury's sympathy for a targeted black man would be at the expense of the abused white wife. The jury's verdict, Williams concludes, was determined not so much by facts as by the cultural forces of racial melodrama long in the making. Revealing melodrama to be a key element in American culture, Williams argues that the race images it has promoted are deeply ingrained in our minds and that there can be no honest discussion about race until Americans recognize this predicament.
