Book excerpt: In the field of astrophysics, modern developments of practice are emerging in order to further understand the spectral information derived from cosmic sources. Radio telescopes are a current mode of practice used to observe these occurrences. Despite the various accommodations that this technology offers, physicists around the globe need a better understanding of the underlying physics and operational components of radio telescopes as well as an explanation of the cosmic objects that are being detected. Analyzing the Physics of Radio Telescopes and Radio Astronomy is an essential reference source that discusses the principles of the astronomical instruments involved in the construction of radio telescopes and the analysis of cosmic sources and celestial objects detected by this machinery. Featuring research on topics such as electromagnetic theory, antenna design, and geometrical optics, this book is ideally designed for astrophysicists, engineers, researchers, astronomers, students, and educators seeking coverage on the operational methods of radio telescopes and understanding the physical processes of radio astronomy.

Book excerpt: Natural and man-made radio frequency interference (RFI) are potentially serious obstacles to the successful operation of an array of spacecraft used for low frequency (1 to 30 MHz) radio interferometry in the near-earth environment. Several satellites and planetary probes have carried radio astronomy experiments, and the moderate data base that they provide are examined to help understand the near-earth RFI environment. The general conclusion is that the region of space within 100 earth-radii of the earth is a hostile environment for any radio astronomy experiment. If a low frequency array in earth orbit is to yield useful astronomical results, severe interference problems must be anticipated and overcome. A number of recommendations are made to further examine the feasibility of such an array. Erickson, W. C. Jet Propulsion Laboratory ...

Due to the fast expansion of active wireless systems, RFI becomes a critical issue for RASs. Strong RFI can cause an RAS’s low noise amplifier (LNA) to operate in its nonlinear region causing nonlinear distortion for the received signal. We address this issue for both single dish RAS and array RAS. For single dish RAS, we develop a signal model that incorporates the nonlinearity effect and study its impact on RAS observation performance. We propose an auxiliary receiver assisted nonlinear-RFI cancellation scheme and a modified RAS signal detection scheme. Furthermore, we develop two channel estimators (unscented Kalman filter-based approach and nonlinear-to-linear mapping approach) for nonlinear systems which we apply in our RFI cancellation scheme. For array RAS, we develop a new signal model at the output of RAS array processing when the LNA at each RAS receiver behaves nonlinearly. We show that the two existing methods to address RFI in RAS array systems fail to deal with the nonlinear RFI. Next, we propose two modified methods to address the nonlinear RFI. Analytical and numerical evaluations are carried out to show the severe effects of nonlinear distortions and show that our proposed methods are capable of achieving a substantial performance advantage.

Book excerpt: The Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen of the EC Joint Research Centre (IPSC-JRC) has been mandated to perform a study on the Radio Frequency (RF) threat against telecommunications and ICT control systems. This study is divided into two parts. The rst part concerns the assessment of high energy radio frequency (HERF) threats, where the focus is on the generation of electromagnetic pulses (EMP), the development of corresponding devices and the possible impact on ICT and power distribution systems. The second part of the study concerns radio frequency interference (RFI) with regard to global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). This document contributes to the second part and contains a detailed literature study disclosing the weaknesses of GNSS systems. Whereas the HERF analysis only concerns intentional interference issues, this study on GNSS also takes into account unintentional interference, enlarging the spectrum of plausible interference scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With rapid innovations in Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless technology, more and more consumer electronic devices around the world are now connected to the internet. In a small form factor electronic device, there are plenty of potential noise sources such as System On Chip (SoC), high speed traces, flexible cables and power converters, etc. Those noise sources can possibly introduce radio frequency interference (RFI) issues. In this dissertation, a transfer function based calculation method is proposed to estimate radio frequency interference (RFI) problems. The derived equations can clearly decompose the RFI problem into two parts: the noise source and the coupling transfer function to the antenna. The proposed method is validated through numeric simulations and real cellphone experiments. Based on this method, a novel RFI mitigation method is proposed. Through near-field scanning of a real product, an equivalent dipole moment of the noise source (CPU and DDR3) is reconstructed, and the near-field components of the victim (Wi-Fi antenna) are measured. By determining the relationship between dipole moment and antenna near field, the noise source is rotated by a certain angle to reduce RFI. New boards with the suggested changes are fabricated and the measured results show a good RFI reduction (up to 8 dB) compared to original boards. Novel machine learning method is also introduced to accurately extract equivalent dipole moments from the near field scanning of a noise source. Compared to the conventional least square method, the proposed machine learning based method is believed to have a better accuracy. Also, machine learning based method is more reliable in handling noise in practical applications"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is an increasing problem that degrades or, even, disrupts the performance of electronic devices. A specific case of great concern is the electromagnetic emissions in the L1 band (1.5742 GHz) that affect GNSS receivers and prevent them from retrieving position, and timing information. Although several RFI detection and mitigation techniques have been developed, none of them exhibit enough rejection against different kinds of interference signals. The aim of this work is to implement an anti-jamming hardware specific for GPS receivers by optimally combining some of the known techniques to take advantage of the best properties of each of them. These techniques include time-frequency analysis based on the Short-Time Fourier Transform and statistical filtering using the Kurtosis normality test and robust standard deviation estimation. The hardware that has been implemented has been tested with a real commercial GPS jammer signal exhibiting a rejection ratio of up to 50 dB. This result is a first step forward in the fight against RFI. Future improvements will include RF bandwidth increase, larger filter bank and additional normality tests.

Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamentals of wireless communications and services, explaining in detail what RF spectrum management is, why it is important, which are the authorities regulating the use of spectrum, and how is it managed and enforced at the international, regional and national levels. The book offers insights to the engineering, regulatory, economic, legal, management policy-making aspects involved. Real-world case studies are presented to depict the various approaches in different countries, and valuable lessons are drawn. The topics are addressed by engineers, advocates and economists employed by national and international spectrum regulators. The book is a tool that will allow the international regional and national regulators to better manage the RF spectrum, and will help operators and suppliers of wireless communications to better understand their regulators.
