Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Political Economy: Hints to Students and Teachers The interest which the public now manifests in economic studies led me to put the material of my lectures into a general form, in order that they might assist inquirers in any part of the country. No special knowledge has, therefore, been demanded of the reader by way of prep aration for the substance of what I have intro duced into this volume. By avoiding, as far as possible, all technical language, I have sought to make the inquiry useful to any general read er of intelligence who may be interested to know how to study political economy. But that which I have most at heart is the exten sion of instruction in political economy in all schools and colleges, and the improvement in methods of teaching the subject. I need hardly say that I shall be glad if these pages call out any suggestions by which these two objects may be furthered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Political Economy Of all the sciences Political Economy is one of the most important. It is the foundation of public and private prosperity. Hence, every person who is to be a citizen of this Republic should have a good knowledge of the elementary principles of Political Economy. It should be one of the prescribed studies in the public schools, but it has seldom been taught outside of colleges and the higher seminaries. It has always been considered a most intricate subject, and hence to be attempted only at the close of a long course of study; but it does not seem possible that a science of such importance can be too difficult for common people to understand. May it not be that the trouble is with the textbooks rather than the subject? The old treatises are full of statistics, discussions, theories, opinions, hypotheses, and arguments; but these are worse than useless in a textbook of elementary principles. They contain matters which I thought the student should know oi, but which it is not necessary for him to study. I would suggest that in no case should the words printed in Italics be passed, until it is known that the class has a clear sense of their meaning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disturbing Elements in the Study and Teaching of Political Economy The following lectures were delivered in the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, April 25-29, 1910, to the Economic Seminary, at whose desire, by the courtesy of the University, they are now printed. As the title suggests, they are discourses not on economic error in general, but on the more subtle fallacies which are apt to invade the reasoning of trained economists in spite of learning and discipline. Such errors creep in from a popular political philosophy (Lecture I), from want of any political philosophy (II), from mistaken aversion to theory (III), from the shortcomings of common or technical language (IV), and from the wrong handling of distinctions of time (V). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics This book is designed to be an introduction to the science of economics. Technical discussions and difficult terminology have been avoided. The author has endeavored to write a book of practical value to the student, but is convinced that any practical work must be founded upon sound theory. There are many economic questions upon which there may be differences of opinion. Both sides of most disputed questions are given. Students should be encouraged to draw their own conclusions after weighing the evidence. While the experience of most teachers of economics has convinced them that one book should be followed as a guide, students should read references in other works. Fortunately there are many excellent books - perhaps too difficult in parts for the beginner - containing many chapters that can be read with profit by even an immature student. Among many works suitable for reference purposes the following are especially recommended: Bulloch, Introduction to the Study of Economics; Carver, Principles of Political Economy; Ely, Outlines of Economics; Fetter, Principles of Economics; Seager, Introduction to Economics; and Turner, Introduction to Economics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy This book has been prepared for use in High Schools and Academies. In writing its pages, I have been Well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no Primer of Political Economy which is here offered but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject. I can only hope that it will be found that those for whom it has been designed will be able to follow that course to their own satisfaction and with good results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American ideals--liberty, equality, democracy, national unity--are bandied about by liberal politicians as a package deal, inseparably intertwined. But the words often flow together better as rhetoric than they mold together in theory. But, as Herbert Croly and his turn-of-the-century contemporaries found, jelling these appealing yet often conflicting concepts into a liberal philosophy was not nearly as easy as embracing them in a campaign speech. In this first full-length study of Herbert Croly's political theory, Edward Stettner analyzes Croly's writings and examines the events, experiences, and people who influenced Croly's thinking. In the process, he reveals Croly's significant influence on modern liberalism as classical liberal theory merged with progressive philosophy. Croly, founder of The New Republic, expounded on issues from the nationalization of railroads to the Espionage Act in his search for a middle way between socialism and capitalism. Stettner illustrates how Croly's political theory influenced the editorial position of one of the leading liberal journals and how his thought in turn was modified in reaction to national and world events, such as presidential elections and World War I. Stettner portrays Croly as a modest and conscientious intellectual who wholeheartedly came to embrace the progressive movement and consequently helped establish the framework for modern liberalism. In doing so, Stettner emphasizes how Croly's philosophy evolved and how Croly was drawn to the conclusion that a strong national government and individual rights could indeed coexist--if not always serenely--in a democratic society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Practical Political Economy: Being the Substance of Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford The following pages speak of Practical Political Economy. The expression might seem to denote a particular department of what is called Political Economy, or else a special application of its truths. I do not use the term in either of these senses. I mean by it simply Political Economy itself. The word Practical is added solely in contradistinction to what may be called Scientific Political Economy. It is intended to indicate a mode of treatment which not only does not claim to be scientific, but which supposes the strictly scientific method to be a mistake. It implies that the body of knowledge, summed up under the title of Political Economy, belongs entirely to the every-day practice of human life. Political Economy finds processes applied all the world over to the satisfaction of the wants of human life in the matter of wealth. It does not invent nor discover them. It does not announce them, like the developments of geometry or the generalisations of physical science, as new discoveries previously unknown, but now revealed by the application of systematic reasoning.
