Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusually thoughtful and well-constructed introduction to the serious study of mathematics, this book requires no background beyond high school courses in plane geometry and elementary algebra. From that starting point, it is designed to lead readers willing to work through its exercises and problems to the achievement of basic mathematical literacy. The text provides a fundamental orientation in modern mathematics, an essential vocabulary of mathematical terms, and some facility in the use of mathematical concepts and symbols. From there, readers will be equipped to move on to more serious work, and they'll be well on the way to having the tools essential for work in the physical sciences, engineering, and the biological and social sciences. Starting with elementary treatments of algebra, logic, and set theory, the book advances to explorations of plane analytic geometry, relations and functions, numbers, and calculus. Subsequent chapters discuss probability, statistical inference, and abstract mathematical theories. Each section is enhanced with exercises in the text and problems at the end. Answers to the exercises and some of the problems are included at the end of each section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a rigorous presentation of mathematics before the advent of calculus. Fundamental concepts in algebra, geometry, and number theory are developed from the foundations of set theory along an elementary, inquiry-driven path. Thought-provoking examples and challenging problems inspired by mathematical contests motivate the theory, while frequent historical asides reveal the story of how the ideas were originally developed. Beginning with a thorough treatment of the natural numbers via Peano’s axioms, the opening chapters focus on establishing the natural, integral, rational, and real number systems. Plane geometry is introduced via Birkhoff’s axioms of metric geometry, and chapters on polynomials traverse arithmetical operations, roots, and factoring multivariate expressions. An elementary classification of conics is given, followed by an in-depth study of rational expressions. Exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions complete the picture, driven by inequalities that compare them with polynomial and rational functions. Axioms and limits underpin the treatment throughout, offering not only powerful tools, but insights into non-trivial connections between topics. Elements of Mathematics is ideal for students seeking a deep and engaging mathematical challenge based on elementary tools. Whether enhancing the early undergraduate curriculum for high achievers, or constructing a reflective senior capstone, instructors will find ample material for enquiring mathematics majors. No formal prerequisites are assumed beyond high school algebra, making the book ideal for mathematics circles and competition preparation. Readers who are more advanced in their mathematical studies will appreciate the interleaving of ideas and illuminating historical details.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Trigonometry, and Trigonometrical Analysis, Preliminary to the Differential Calculus The three great branches of elementary mathematics, meaning all that should precede the study of the Differential Calculus, are Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry. Each pair of these gives rise to a new inquiry, namely, the connexion which exists between the two. Thus, it is practicable to consider separately, 1. The application of arithmetic to algebra, and of algebra to arithmetic. 2. Thai of arithmetic to geometry, and of geometry to arithmetic. 3. That of algebra to geometry, and of geometry to algebra. This will, at first sight, appear something like an undue quantity of distinction: nevertheless, with the exception only of the two-fold comparison of arithmetic with geometry, there is in it no degree of separation which cannot be fully justified,, either as matter of necessity or convenience. The application of arithmetic to algebra is made in the very formation of the latter science, though based upon considerations neither known nor admitted in the former. But, nevertheless, those considerations are derived from arithmetic in this sense, - that the want of them is suggested by the imperfections of the latter, and the method of arriving at them by the manner in which those imperfections appear. Book excerpt: A fun, entertaining exploration of the ideas and people behind the growth of trigonometry Trigonometry has a reputation as a dry, difficult branch of mathematics, a glorified form of geometry complicated by tedious computation. In Trigonometric Delights, Eli Maor dispels this view. Rejecting the usual descriptions of sine, cosine, and their trigonometric relatives, he brings the subject to life in a compelling blend of history, biography, and mathematics. From the proto-trigonometry of the Egyptian pyramid builders and the first true trigonometry developed by Greek astronomers, to the epicycles and hypocycles of the toy Spirograph, Maor presents both a survey of the main elements of trigonometry and a unique account of its vital contribution to science and social growth. A tapestry of stories, curiosities, insights, and illustrations, Trigonometric Delights irrevocably changes how we see this essential mathematical discipline.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geometry and Trigonometry The Editor, in offering to the public Dr. Brewster's translation of Legendre's Geometry under its present form, is fully impressed with the responsibility he assumes in making alterations in a work of such deserved celebrity. In the original work, as well as in the translations of Dr. Brewster and Professor Farrar, the propositions are not enunciated in general terms, but with reference to, and by the aid of, the particular diagrams used for the demonstrations. It is believed that this departure from the method of Euclid has been generally regretted. The propositions of Geometry are general truths, and as such, should be stated in general terms, and without reference to particular figures. The method of enunciating them by the aid of particular diagrams seems to have been adopted to avoid the difficulty which beginners experience in comprehending abstract propositions. But in avoiding this difficulty, and thus lessening, at first, the intellectual labour, the faculty of abstraction, which it is one of the primary objects of the study of Geometry to strengthen, remains, to a certain extent, unimproved.
