Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Comparative Anatomy, Vol. 2 The fact that this second volume of the translation appears four years after the first is due partly to the delay in the issue of the third and fourth German parts of which it is composed, and partly to the increased difficulty in the work of translation. A comparison of the two volumes will show at a glance that the work has developed under the hands of the author: the treatment has become more elaborate. The two "chapters" which practically fill this volume are in reality more like comprehensive treatises on the groups with which they deal, and as such could only be adequately translated from the German by some one with a very special knowledge of both groups. There are probably few zoologists who have attempted to make a special study of two such heterogeneous phyla as the Mollusca and the Echinodermata. In addition, therefore, to frequent references to the original literature and to constant applications to kind friends, the whole of the text relating to the two chief groups was submitted to specialists for revision. The translators beg to tender their warmest thanks to their friends who kindly undertook this laborious task. Mr. B. B. Woodward read the text of the chapter dealing with the Mollusca, revising the terminology, and suggesting slight alterations, which have been either adopted without comment in the text or else placed in short footnotes. Mr. W. Percy Sladen and Mr. F. A. Bather revised the text dealing with the Echinodermata, each with special reference to the group with which his name is most associated. Thanks are also due to Professor Jeffery Bell for his kind assistance in the solution of difficulties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates The brevity of the descriptions is, however, to some extent made up for by the number of woodcuts. Most of these are taken from the German edition, but several new figures have been added. The arrangement of the book according to organs, and not according to groups of animals, is likely to render it more difficult for a beginner, and a general knowledge of Zoology will be of great assistance. The pages on which the different groups are described are, however, collected together in the index, so that the sections relating to any one group can be easily referred to. The present arrangement seems to be the only possible one if the book is to be founded on a scientific basis, for it is most important that the student should grasp the fact that there has been an evolution of organs, as well as of animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Comparative Anatomy of Animals, Vol. 2 The publication of this volume has been long delayed, owing to my having been on military duty throughout the year 1900. As in the first volume, I have been guided in my selection Of types Of animal organisation by the requirements of students reading for the preliminary and intermediate science examina tions in the Universities Of Great Britain. A considerable space has been allotted to the leading features of the embryology of the various types, since, as I believe, a just appreciation Of the problems of Comparative Anatomy cannot be attained without the study of embryonic as well as adult structures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Comparative Anatomy To domestic animals, and to such as the sports of the field bring most frequently under our notice, I have paid particular attention; partly, because such animals are most easily procured for dissection, and partly on account of the great interest which is likely to be taken in a correct knowledge of their structure. With regard to foreign animals, I have uniformly adverted to their most striking peculiari ties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comparative Anatomy of the Domesticated Animals The high esteem in which the first edition has been held for so many years in this country, in our Colonies, and in the United States of America, amply testifies to the value of the work; and in this new edition every thing has been done to render it still more comprehensive, complete, and useful. The anatomy of the Ass, Mule, and Rabbit has been added, as well as that of the Camel - that animal being utilized not only in our army in different parts of the world, but also in some of our Colonies. The number of illustrations has been increased by more than one hundred and thirty, the pages have been enlarged, and the letterpress so modified as to make reading and reference much easier. A copious index - there is none in the French edition - has also been added, with the view of enhancing the usefulness of the book as a work of reference for students and practitioners. With these alterations, additions, and modifications, I trust the work may continue to be accepted as in every way worthy of the position accorded to it as the best on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Anatomy and Physiology The reader who is sufficiently acquainted with the progress in vertebrate physiology during the last phase of physiological methods, and who knows how scattered and incomplete are the investigations which have been made by the same kind of physical and chemical inquiries on invertebrate animals, will not expect to find in the present volume any complete statement of the physiology of animals, in the sense in which that term is now used. Such observations as have been made without especial reference to the vital processes of man are, for the most part, very valuable and suggestive but the time to write a text book oi Comparative Physiology, as we now understand it, has not yet arrived.
