Book excerpt: A non-local differential phenomenological theory for turbulent free-convection boundary layers along a two-dimensional heated vertical plate is described, in which both eddy viscosity and eddy thermal diffusivity are considered unknown. The total viscosity (molecular plus eddy) is taken to be governed by a parabolic rate equation which takes into account turbulent convection, diffusion, generation and decay, while the turbulent thermal diffusivity is based on a constant turbulent Prandtl number. Based on this closed system of partial differential equations, the mean velocity and temperature field as well as the eddy viscosity and the turbulent thermal diffusivity distribution can be mapped out. It is shown for the vertical-plate problem that the generation of turbulence is essentially shear induced, and that the gravity force only influences the mean velocity and temperature fields. A degenerated local theory is developed to interpret and compare with existing experimental data. Calculations show that the turbulent free-convection boundary layer consists essentially of three distinct regions, namely, the viscous sublayer, the inner layer, and the outer layer. The viscous sublayer defined by vanishing eddy viscosity, is shown to have a nonlinear velocity distribution. The inner layer is dominated by the balance of turbulent generation and decay. The outer layer is governed mainly by turbulent convection and diffusion. It is shown that Corrsin's viscous superlayer also exists in the turbulent free-convection case and that temperature fluctuations tend to reduce the sharpness of the turbulent-non-turbulent interface. It has also been found that Grashof number has strong effects on turbulent generation and decay. (Author).

In connection with the logarithmic wall law, it is shown that there is no viscous sublayer. The formulation of the oscillation problem of turbulence and the solution of boundary value tasks with coordinate systems adapted to the specific task are provided for many technically significant turbulent flows, including smooth and rough pipe flow, confusor and diffuser flow, swirl flow, stirrer flow, inlet flow, intermittency, wake flow and free jets. An epistemological component of the innovation is the representation of turbulence by con-travariant vector fields which are characterized by the stability of the turbulence structures at changed structural density. The turbulence structures act as active momentum transmitters of refracted monopoles, dipoles, tripoles and quadrupoles in the flow field. The dissipation mechanism with regard to the processes in turbulence structures is, for the first time, qualita-tively and quantitatively described. The transition from the contravariant turbulence velocity field to the covariant convection velocity field induce refraction and entanglement. The principles of turbulence act as fractal principle, reflection principle, entanglement principle, refractive principle and convolution principle. The wave structure theory of turbulence provides an arraying tool for further investigations into numerous open problems.

Book excerpt: Particle-image velocimetry (PIV), shadowgraph, and thermochroic liquid crystal techniques are applied to the study of spatial structure of turbulent thermal convection in wide horizontal water layers. A large-aspect-ratio test section for the study of turbulent Rayleigh convection in water has been constructed, instrumented and characterized. Boundary temperature measurements reveal significant finite Biot number effects for water bounded by aluminum. Particle-image velocimetry measurements in a vertical plane in Rayleigh convection gave approximately 8500 velocity vectors in each of 62 instantaneous realizations at a Rayleigh number of 1.0 $times$ 10$sp{8}$. The vector fields reveal structures ranging in size from a few millimeters in the boundary regions to large-scale motions spanning the 10 cm layer depth. Ensemble one-point statistics of the velocity field, including the mean velocity field, root-mean-square profiles, and probability-density functions of the vertical velocity as a function of height are presented. The PIV data have also provided the first measurements of the two-point spatial velocity correlation in turbulent Rayleigh convection. The PIV measurements are supplemented by thermochroic liquid crystal visualizations of temperature fields on the lower boundary, and by shadowgraph projections of the temperature fields in the bulk. The shadowgraphs reveal well-defined, viscous thermal plumes which generally cross the layer intact; midlayer transit measurements from videotaped shadowgraphs in Rayleigh convection and unsteady nonpenetrative convection give ascent rates of 1.4 to 1.5 times Deardorff's inviscid convective velocity scale. The thermochroic boundary temperature visualizations showed plumes emanating from nodes in a network of warm lines enclosing patches of cooler fluid. Deardorff's inviscid velocity and temperature scales for the core are refined by enforcing equality of bulk turbulent production and spectral energy transfer. The collapse of velocity fluctuation data under the new "bulk" scales for different modes of turbulent thermal convection shows the old systematic discrepancies arose from dimensionally correct but numerically arbitrary scale definitions. Also, under the new scaling, a monotonic Rayleigh number dependence emerges among the core temperature fluctuation profiles. This trend indicates that true high-Reynolds-number invariance is not achieved at Rayleigh numbers accessible to direct numerical simulation and laboratory-scale experiments.
