Book excerpt: We study the angular momentum, shape and density structures of dark matter haloes using very large dark matter simulations, and use smaller, higher-resolution simulations to investigate how the distributions of these properties are changed by the physical processes associated with baryons and galaxy formation. We begin with a brief review of the necessary background theory, including the growth of cosmic structures, the origin of their angular momenta, and the techniques used to simulate galaxies, haloes and the large scale structure. In Chapter 2, we use the Millennium Simulation (MS) to investigate the distributions of the spin and shape parameters of millions of dark matter haloes. We compare results for haloes identified using three different algorithms, including one based on the branches of the halo merger trees. In addition to characterising the relationships between halo spin, shape and mass, we also study their impact on halo clustering and bias. We go on in Chapter 3 to investigate the internal angular momentum structure of dark matter haloes. We look at the radial profiles of the dark matter angular momentum in terms of both magnitude and direction, again using large-volume dark matter simulations including the MS. We then directly compare dark matter haloes simulated both with and without baryonic physics, studying how this changes the dark matter angular momentum. After relating the spin orientation of galaxies to their haloes, we consider the shape of the projected, stacked mass distribution of haloes oriented according to their central galaxy, mimicking attempts to measure halo ellipticity by weak gravitational lensing. We consider the density structure of dark matter haloes in Chapter 4. For the dark matter simulations, we focus our interest on the source of the scatter in the distribution of concentration parameters, correlating it with both the halo spin and formation time. We compare different algorithms for predicting the concentration distribution using different aspects of the merger histories. We again go on to directly compare high-resolution haloes in simulations run with and without baryons and galaxy formation, looking at how these additional physical processes transform the density profiles. Finally, we compare the circular velocity curves of the haloes simulated with galaxies to the rotation curves of observed galaxies, using the Universal Rotation Curve model.

Book excerpt: An important, open research topic today is to understand the relevance that dark matter halo substructure may have for dark matter searches. In the standard cosmological model, halo substructure or subhalos are predicted to be largely abundant inside larger halos, for example, galaxies such as ours, and are thought to form first and later merge to form larger structures. Dwarf satellite galaxies—the most massive exponents of halo substructure in our own galaxy—are already known to be excellent targets for dark matter searches, and indeed, they are constantly scrutinized by current gamma-ray experiments in the search for dark matter signals. Lighter subhalos not massive enough to have a visible counterpart of stars and gas may be good targets as well, given their typical abundances and distances. In addition, the clumpy distribution of subhalos residing in larger halos may boost the dark matter signals considerably. In an era in which gamma-ray experiments possess, for the first time, the exciting potential to put to test the preferred dark matter particle theories, a profound knowledge of dark matter astrophysical targets and scenarios is mandatory should we aim for accurate predictions of dark matter-induced fluxes for investing significant telescope observing time on selected targets and for deriving robust conclusions from our dark matter search efforts. In this regard, a precise characterization of the statistical and structural properties of subhalos becomes critical. In this Special Issue, we aim to summarize where we stand today on our knowledge of the different aspects of the dark matter halo substructure; to identify what are the remaining big questions, and how we could address these; and, by doing so, to find new avenues for research.

Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to (i) explore the physics that drives universal accretion history of dark matter halos; (ii) determine the relation between the halos accretion history and the halos internal structure; and (iii) disentangle the impact of halos accretion history on galaxy evolution. To address these topics, we first use the extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism to derive the halo mass accretion history (MAH) from the growth rate of initial density perturbations. We show that the halo MAH can be well described by an exponential function of redshift in the high-redshift regime. However, in the low-redshift regime the mass history growth slows down because the growth of density perturbations is halted in the dark energy dominated era due to the accelerated expansion of the Universe. As a result, in the low-redshift regime the halo MAH can be described by a power-law function of redshift. We complement this study with the analysis of MAHs of dark matter halos using a suite of cosmological simulations. We explore the relation between the density profile of dark matter halos and their MAHs, and confirm that the formation time, defined as the time when the virial mass of the main progenitor equals the mass enclosed within the scale radius, correlates strongly with concentration. We combine both analysis, analytic and numerical, to show that the halo MAH is the link between halo concentration and the initial density perturbation field. The connection found between the halo MAH and its density profile reached in these studies was vital to derive a semi-analytic, physically motivated model for dark matter halo concentration as a function of halo mass and redshift. Because the semi-analytic model is based on EPS theory, it can be applied to wide ranges in mass, redshift and cosmology. The resulting concentration-mass (c-M) relations are found to agree with the simulations, and because the model applies only to relaxed halos, they do not exhibit the upturn at high masses or high redshifts found by some recent works. We predict a change of slope in the z~0 c-M relation at a mass scale of 10^11 solar masses. We find that this is due to the change in the functional form of the halo MAH, which goes from being dominated by an exponential (for high-mass halos) to a power-law (for low-mass halos). During the latter phase, the core radius remains approximately constant, and the concentration grows due to the drop of the background density. We then connect the evolution of dark matter halos to the evolution of galaxies. We investigate the hot hydrostatic halo formation and its dependence on feedback mechanisms. We find that in the presence of energy sources like stellar feedback, the hot halo mass increases and the mass scale of hot halo formation is reduced. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) do not affect the hot halo as strongly. We develop a semi-analytic approach that makes use of both, the hot halo mass and the fraction of shock-heated gas, to calculate a `critical mass scale' for hot halo formation. We find that this mass scale, where the heating rate produced by accretion shocks equals cooling, is the point in mass above which halos develop a stable hot atmosphere. In the redshift range z=0-4, the critical mass is 10^11.7 solar masses, but it then increases for increasing redshift, in very good agreement with our numerical results. Finally, we investigate the physics that drives the gas accretion rate onto galaxies at the center of dark matter halos. We separately analyze the gas accretion rate onto the interstellar medium (ISM) and onto the galaxy. We find that the accretion rate onto the ISM remains roughly constant in halos larger than 10^11.7 solar masses, whereas the accretion rate onto the galaxy increases with increasing halo mass and flattens in the halo mass range 10^11.7-10^12.7 solar masses, and at redshifts z

Book excerpt: The Lambda cold dark matter (ACDM) model is enormously successful at predicting large scale structure in the Universe. However, some tensions still remain on small scales, specifically regarding observed satellites of the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda. Foremost among the problems have been the missing satellite, too big to fail, and cusp/core problems, which concern the expected abundance of satellites and their inner structure. This Ph.D. thesis consists of a series of studies using dark matter only cosmological N-body simulations of MW-mass galaxies to address topics related to these issues. In light of the recent Planck mission, I investigate how changes to cosmological parameters affect dark matter halo substructure. I find that the process of continuous sub-halo accretion and destruction leads to a steady state description of most subhalo properties in a given host, unchanged by small fluctuations in cosmological parameters. Subhalo concentration, maximum circular velocity, and formation times, however, are somewhat affected. One way to reduce the central density of satellites, as needed to solve the cusp/core and too big to fail problems, is through self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). I search for new implications of SIDM and find that stars in satellites spread out to larger radii and are tidally stripped at a higher rate in SIDM than CDM, even though the mass loss rate of dark matter is unchanged. These signatures should be particularly prominent in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies for the class of otherwise difficult to constrain velocity-dependent SIDM models. I also helped carry out the Caterpillar project, a suite of 36 high mass resolution (~ 10' Mo/particle) simulations of MW-like galaxies used to study diversity in halo substructure. To these, I apply abundance matching and reionization models to make novel predictions about the abundance of satellites in isolated dwarf galaxies out to 8 Mpc to help guide future searches. Applying the same techniques to predict satellites within 50 kpc of the LMC, I discover large discrepancies with the observed stellar mass function, which may lead to new constraints on the galaxy stellar mass-halo mass relationship, and the ability of reionization to leave dark matter halos entirely dark.

As such there should be observational signatures of the merging process in the structure and dynamics of the remnant galaxy. State-of-the-art high-resolution cosmological simulations have been used to explore three such signatures: the abundance of substructure, the spin and shape of haloes, and the orbital content of these haloes. The Millennium Simulation, combined with semi-analytic galaxy catalogues, is used to compare the predicted frequency of bright central satellites to observations of field and lens galaxies. The predicted frequency is largely independent of galaxy type, but is shown to increase with redshift and halo mass. The predicted frequency is found to be lower than that observed in the Compact Lens All Sky Survey, but considerably higher than that observed in the lens sample of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey and in the field galaxies of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Cosmic Evolution Survey. The distributions of the spin and shape of haloes are explored and the roles of baryons and the physical prescriptions of stellar and black hole feedback are investigated. Baryons act to make the haloes more spherical and are shown to have a significant effect on the shape of the dark matter. The shapes of the simulated haloes are in broad agreement with a wide range of observational estimates of elliptical galaxies. Results of spectral analyses of the orbital content of simulations with different feedback prescriptions are presented. Dark matter only haloes are dominated by box orbits in the central region, but the fraction of box orbits is found to decrease when baryons are included. The orbits of the stellar particles are found to be remarkably similar to those of dark matter particles.

These subhalos are assumed have a mass distribution that extends down to the smallest mass in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) hierarchy, which lies below the current resolution limit of simulations. Substructure has important ramifications for indirect dark matter detection experiments as the signal depends sensitively on the small-scale density distribution of dark matter in the Galactic halo. A clumpy halo produces a stronger signal than halos where the density is a smooth function of radius. However, the small-scale Universe presents a daunting challenge for models of structure formation. In the CDM paradigm, structures form in a hierarchical fashion, with small-scale perturbations collapsing first to form halos that then grow via mergers. However, near the bottom of the hierarchy, dark matter structures form nearly simultaneously across a wide range of scales. To explore these small scales, I use a series of simulations of scale-free cosmological models, where the initial density power spectrum is a power-law. I can effectively examine various scales in the Universe by using the index in these artificial cosmologies as a proxy for scale. This approach is not new, but my simulations are larger than previous such simulations by a factor of 3 or more. My results call into question the often made assumption that the subhalo population is scale-free. The subhalo population does depend on the mass of the host. By combining my study with others, I construct a phenomenological model for the subhalo mass function. This model shows that the full subhalo hierarchy does not greatly boost the dark matter annihilation flux of a host halo. Thus, the enhancement of the Galactic halo signature due to substructure can not alone account the observed flux of cosmic rays produced by annihilating dark matter. Finally, I examine the nonlinear power spectrum, which is used to determine cosmological parame.

Book excerpt: We study the structure and substructure of Lambda-CDM halos using a suite of high-resolution cosmological N-body simulations. Our analysis of the substructure population of dark matter halos focuses on their mass and peak circular velocity functions, as well as their spatial distribution and dynamics. In our analysis, we consider the whole population of subhalos physically associated with the main halo, defined as those that have, at some time, crossed within the virial radius of the main progenitor. We find that this population extends beyond 3 times the virial radius and includes objects on unorthodox orbits, several of which travel at velocities approaching the nominal escape speed from the system. We trace the origin of these unorthodox orbits to the tidal dissociation of bound groups, which results in the ejection of some systems along tidal streams. This process primarily influences low-mass systems leading to clear mass-dependent biases in their spatial distribution and kinematics: the lower the subhalo mass at accretion time the more concentrated and kinematically hotter their descendant population. When quantified in terms of present day subhalo mass these trends disappear, presumably due to the increased effect of dynamical friction and tidal stripping on massive systems. We confirm several of these results using the ultra-high resolution Aquarius simulations, which extend the dynamic range of the subhalo mass function by nearly 3 orders of magnitude. Using these simulations we confirm that the substructure mass function follows a power-law, $dN/dM\propto M^{-1.9}$, and exhibits very little halo-to-halo scatter. This implies that the total mass in substructure within a given halo is bounded to a small fraction of the total halo mass, with the smooth component dominating the halo inner regions. Using the Aquarius simulations we study the structure of galaxy-sized Lambda-CDM halos. We find that the spherically averaged density profiles become increasingly sh.
