Book Synopsis Works for string quartet by : Alban Berg
Download or read book Works for string quartet written by Alban Berg and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive volume brings together three major 20th-century chamber works: Berg's String Quartet No. 1, Op. 3; Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet; and Webern's Five Movements for String Quartet. Heavily influenced by the works of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg’s String Quartet No. 1 brought its composer into the musical vanguard. Schoenberg declared himself astonished by the "fullness and unconstraint of its musical language, the strength and sureness of its presentation, its careful working and significant originality." Stravinsky recognized his Three Pieces for String Quartet as marking an important change in his art, and this turning point can be regarded as an experiment in new stylistic possibilities. The first piece features a mechanical repetition of a musical figure; the second is highly atonal; and the final piece introduces the austere style to which the composer later returned. Like Berg, Webern was a student of Schoenberg, and the Five Movements for String Quartet both reflects the master's teachings and extends beyond them. Departing from traditional thematic composition and form, these gemlike miniatures anticipate the development of the twelve-tone method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is the most up-to-date body of musical knowledge ever gathered together. The New Grove composer biographies have been selected from the dictionary to bring the finest of the biographies to a wider audience. Each has been expanded and updated for book publication and contains a comprehensive work-list, index, and fully revised bibliography, in addition to the definitive view of the subject's life and works. Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Alban Berg comprise what is known as the 'Second Viennese School.' Their early 20th-century atonal and 12-tone composition marked the abolition of the traditional tonal functions and heralded an entirely new treatment of dissonance. These three biographies by Paul Griffiths (Webern), Oliver Neighbour (Schoenberg), and George Perle (Berg) provide insight into these developments and offer succinct and illuminating discussions of the composers' lives and works.

Download or read book Webern Studies written by Kathryn Bailey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays looks at the music of Webern from several different perspectives. Webern scholarship, based on the sketches and other primary material now owned by the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel and the Library of Congress in Washington, has emphasised Webern's lyricism, and this is a theme running through Webern Studies. Most of the essays are the result of work with primary material. The volume includes entries from Webern's diaries, and all of the row tables for his twelve-note music. A comprehensive Webern bibliography covers thoroughly the period since Zoltan Roman's bibliography of 1978.
Book Synopsis Schoenberg and His School by : René Leibowitz
Download or read book Schoenberg and His School written by René Leibowitz and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noted music theorist presents a brilliant and sweeping study of Schoenberg’s compositions and his influence on the generations that followed. A pioneering composer and leader of the Second Viennese School, Arthur Schoenberg was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century classical music. In Schoenberg and His School, composer, conductor, and music theorist René Leibowitz offers an authoritative analysis of Schoenberg’s groundbreaking contributions to composition theory and Western polyphony. In addition to detailing his subject’s major works, Leibowitz also explores Schoenberg’s influence on the works of his two great disciples, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Leibowitz considers how the influences of all three men have, in turn, created new movements within contemporary music today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schoenberg's quartets and trio, composed over a nearly forty-year period, occupy a central position among twentieth-century chamber music. This volume, based on papers presented at a conference in honor of David Lewin, collects a wide range of approaches to Schoenberg's pieces. The first part of the book provides a historical context to these works, examining Viennese quartet culture and traditions, Webern's reception of Schoenberg's Second Quartet, Schoenberg's view of the Beethoven quartets, and the early reception of Schoenberg's First Quartet. The second part examines musical issues of motive, text setting, meter, imitative counterpoint, and closure within Schoenberg's quartets and trio.
