Danger and romance are woven together as Dr. Willoughby must choose between keeping his well appointed preaching position or following his conscience. In this work of historical fiction, secret passageways, a devastating plague, and examples of upholding Christian values will help transport the reader to this rich period of history. Book Synopsis The Strife of Systems by : Nicholas Rescher
Download or read book The Strife of Systems written by Nicholas Rescher and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disagreement of philosophers is notorious. In this book, Rescher develops a theory that accounts for this conflict and shows how the basis for philosophical disagreement roots in divergent 'cognitive values'-values regarding matters such as importance, centrality, and priority. In light of this analysis, Rescher maintains that, despite this inevitable discord, a skeptical or indifferentist reaction to traditional philosophy is not warranted, seeing that genuine value-conflicts are at issue. He argues that philosophy is an important and worthwhile enterprise, notwithstanding its inability to achieve rationally constrained consensus on the issues. Given the nature of the enterprise, consensus is not a realistic goal, and failure to achieve it is not a defect. Accordingly, Rescher argues against the revisionist views proposed by Richard Rorty and Robert Nozick. His discussions are devoted to providing a clear view of why philosophical problems arise and how philosophers address them.

I fell in love with the Lord because I found out He loved me. I went to church all my life, raised my children in church, but I was still bound up with insecurities inside until I was forty-eight years old. When God set me free, I became determined to help others be set free. I was like Lazarus at the tomb, free and yet still bound. So many people are living in an inner hell. Satan is in control of their lives, and they don't even realize it. Not only lost people are living in a private hell, but so many Christian are too. I am tired of saved people living in defeat. I am spending the rest of my life declaring war on the devil. I am spending the rest of my life helping God expose the enemy in our lives. I want people set free and living the abundant life in Christ Jesus. It is time for Christians to take a stand in their own lives if they ever want to make a difference in someone else's life. It is up to us to show them the way. We can no longer be content to go through life allowing the devil to manipulate us like puppets on a string. We have got to start recognizing the enemy at work in our lives and start taking control over him. We have the weapons and the authority to use them on him. Let's begin to take control of our lives the way God meant for us to. It is time to declare war and start marching against the strife in our lives, Satan's counterfeit, and start living in peace, God's perfect gift.

Book Synopsis Vital Strife by : Benjamin C. Parris
Download or read book Vital Strife written by Benjamin C. Parris and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vital Strife examines the close yet puzzling relationship between sleep and ethical care in early modernity. The plays, poems, and philosophical essays at the heart of this book—by Jasper Heywood, William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, John Milton, and Margaret Cavendish—explore the unconscious motions of corporeal life and the drowsy forms of sentience at the boundaries of human thought and intentionality. Benjamin Parris shows how these writers, although trained under the Renaissance humanist paradigm of attentive care, begin to dissolve the humanist coupling of virtue with vigilance by giving credence to the vital power of sleep. In contrast to humanist thinkers who equated sleep with carelessness, these writers draw on the ancient Stoic principle of oikeiôsis—the process of orienting the living being toward its proper objects of care, beginning with itself—in asserting the value of sleep, while underscoring insomnia's threat to the ethical flourishing of persons and polity alike. Parris offers an important revaluation of Stoic philosophy, which has too often been misconstrued as renouncing feeling and sympathetic connection with others. With its striking new account of the reception of Stoicism and attitudes toward sleep and sleeplessness in early modern thought, Vital Strife reveals the period's mounting concern with the regenerative nature of physical life and its elaboration of a newfound ethics of care.
