Book excerpt: The story of Gallipoli has been told many times, but few first-hand accounts exist, and none shows such acute observation as this one by the commander who led the assault on Chunuk Bair: Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone. His diary and letters reveal a man of honesty, wit, knowledge and courage — and tell a moving story we should never forget. Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone, commanding officer of the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli, is best known for his capture and heroic defence of Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915. A gifted leader of men, he planned the action with his characteristic good sense and attention to detail. Chunuk Bair was held for two days before being lost in the last of a series of furious counter-attacks. By then William Malone was dead, and New Zealand had lost one of its finest officers. It emerged later that Malone had left behind a detailed diary and a large number of letters to family members and friends. Always shrewd and observant, Malone charts almost daily the events in the year leading up to Chunuk Bair: his preparation for war, the training camps, the voyage to Egypt, landing at Gallipoli, and life on the peninsula during the eventful few months from April to August 1915. Renowned for his imposition of tight discipline, Malone was nevertheless a caring and thoughtful leader of his men, always concerned for their welfare. He also loved his family, and in particular his second wife Ida. His letters to her are among the most moving in this book, and his tender concern for their young family back home shines through. The story of his older sons, three of whom also served in the Great War, forms part of the narrative too, a family story which continues right up to 2012, when Malone’s great-great-grandson was killed on active service in Afghanistan.

Book excerpt: The American Civil War tore the nation apart in the 1860s, and in some ways, it continues to do so today, with arguments over states' rights, racism, and Confederate flags and monuments. Robert E. Lee became the face of one side of this debate. Much of our knowledge about Lee is gained culturally, filtered through public opinion and our own personal biases. This book provides a more holistic view of Lee, detailing his life before the war, thoughts he communicated during it, and his nineteenth-century Virginian background. It offers a chance to learn about the roots of the controversy around Lee, as well as enough facts for readers to develop opinions for themselves.

Book excerpt: The fateful duel of 1809 between Lord Castlereagh and George Canning is one of the great puzzles of 19th-century British politics. What made these two titans of the political scene - close colleagues and both highly effective members of the Cabinet - draw arms against each other? Canning was Foreign Secretary while Castlereagh was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies: what were they thinking on that ominous morning and what was important enough to provoke two Cabinet ministers to such extraordinary behaviour? This detailed history of the famous duel is the first to examine fully the careers of these two great men and the political conflicts that brought them to fire shots at each other on Putney Heath. Drawing on previously overlooked private papers, Giles Hunt traces what happened on that eventful day and its consequences for British politics. Castlereagh is traditionally depicted as an old-fashioned Tory reactionary, Canning as a brilliant but ambitious liberal. "The Duel" analyses how much truth there is in these descriptions and examines the roots of the political and personal rivalry which led these two men to face each other with pistols early in the morning of 21st September 1809 in one of the strangest and most significant duels of history.

Coit in the Saturday Review and as "masterly" by Henry F. Graff in the New York Times Book Review. The Constitution could not be more specific: "No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States." Yet, in over two centuries since these words were written, the American people, despite official disapproval, have chosen a political nobility. For generation after generation they have turned for leadership to certain families. They are America's political dynasties. Now, in the twentieth century, surprisingly, American political life seems to be largely peopled by those who qualify, in Stewart Alsop's phrase, as "People's Dukes." They are all around us?Kennedys, Longs, Tafts, Roosevelts. Here is the panorama of America's political dynasties from colonial days to the present in fascinating profiles of sixteen of the leading families. Some, like the Roosevelts, have shown remarkable staying power. Others are all but forgotten, such as the Washburns, a family in which four sons of a bankrupt shopkeeper were elected to Congress from four different states. America's Political Dynasties investigates the roles of these families in shaping the nation and traces the whole pattern of political inheritance, which has been a little considered but unique and significant feature of American government and diplomacy. And in doing so, it also illuminates the lives and personalities of some two hundred often engaging, usually ambitious, sometimes brilliant, occasionally unscrupulous individuals.

Book excerpt: **2014 Must Read** Otago Daily Times 'The life, the health, the intelligence, and the morals of the nation count for more than riches, and I would rather have this country free from want and squalor and unemployed than the home of multi-millionaires.'—Richard Seddon, 1905 *** Casting a long shadow over New Zealand history, Richard John Seddon, Premier from 1893 to his untimely death in 1906, held a clear vision for the country he led. Pushing New Zealand in more egalitarian directions than ever before, he was both the builder and the maintenance man – if not the architect – of our country. Challenging popular opinion of New Zealand's longest-serving Prime Minister as a ruthless pragmatist, cunning misogynist and Imperialistic jingoist, this landmark biography of Seddon presents an altogether more sympathetic, erudite appraisal. Reconciling two generations of New Zealand scholarship, Richard Seddon: King of God's Own demonstrates that, while holding fast to common ideals, Seddon was successful by mastering the art of the possible. He knew instinctively what his electorate would tolerate and remained in step with public opinion. Despite contradictions in his attitudes towards other races, he fought to ensure privilege did not become entrenched in what he envisioned as a white man's utopia. In this perceptive new evaluation, political historian Tom Brooking explains Seddon's complex relationship with Maori and shows how he in fact held a progressively bi-cultural vision for the future of 'God's Own Country'. Seddon was no saint. Somewhat autocratic and given to petty nepotism, he nevertheless remains the most dominant political leader in our country's history. Internationally, his high profile within the Empire helped put New Zealand on the map. Domestically, he sought a middle ground between free-market extremism and full-blown socialism. And more privately, Seddon was a devoted family man, his actions shaped much more by his supportive wife and assertive daughters than has previously been realised. Richard Seddon: King of God's Own is a superlative achievement in New Zealand history writing. Absorbing, wide-ranging and beautifully articulated, it reframes and repositions one of the founding fathers of modern New Zealand. *** 'The definitive biography of one of New Zealand's most influential political leaders.' —Paul Moon, author of New Zealand in the Twentieth Century 'King of God's Own is a nuanced and generous assessment of our most famous Premier, a man very much of his own time.' —Gavin McLean, co-editor of the bestselling Frontier of Dreams: The Story of New Zealand 'An excellent biography, and a major revision of an important period in this country's history.' —Barry Gustafson, acclaimed biographer of Sir Keith Holyoake, Sir Robert Muldoon and Michael Joseph Savage Also available as an eBook

Book excerpt: "America the Great" is the result of five years' research and writing that began in late 2009 in response to the contemporary American "tea party" movement and criticisms that the movement's participants did not know the history and theory of the original 1773 Boston Tea Party from which the modern movement takes its name. The extensive library of original books, newspapers, magazines, etc., now available (primarily via "google books") to anyone over the Internet, means that researchers have available to them the university libraries of the world. The availability of accurate original documents made it possible to expand the original scope of research into other historical events, and into other countries (primarily Great Britain), and enabled the work to develop into a more general examination of theories of human dignity, and of the differing conception of government that arises depending on the conception of human dignity that is characteristic of the people that is creating that government.

Book excerpt: A TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Drawing on an exceptional combination of skills as literary biographer, novelist, and chronicler of London history, Peter Ackroyd surely re-creates the world that shaped Shakespeare--and brings the playwright himself into unusually vivid focus. With characteristic narrative panache, Ackroyd immerses us in sixteenth-century Stratford and the rural landscape–the industry, the animals, even the flowers–that would appear in Shakespeare’s plays. He takes us through Shakespeare’s London neighborhood and the fertile, competitive theater world where he worked as actor and writer. He shows us Shakespeare as a businessman, and as a constant reviser of his writing. In joining these intimate details with profound intuitions about the playwright and his work, Ackroyd has produced an altogether engaging masterpiece.

Book excerpt: Most people are completely unaware that the Shakespeare authorship question is the greatest cultural mystery in Western Civilization. Few realize that Will Shakspere of Stratford-on-Avon was an uneducated grain speculator and real estate investor who could not read or write, yet he was chosen as the front man for a fraudulent conspiracy perpetrated by Queen Elizabeth's chief counselor, Robert Cecil, for reasons of monarchial succession, greed and power. The astonishing power of Conventional Wisdom has kept the ruse going, perpetrated by Professors of English who cannot break the tenacious shackles of their guild mythology and thus refuse to believe the reams of authoritative evidence discovered in the past century in favor of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, as Shakespeare. Volume 10 of this anthology series--Moniment-- contains eighteen brilliant, compelling articles by highly qualified authorship experts who convincingly reinforce the case for Edward de Vere and annihilate the completely impossible candidacy of the illiterate Stratford Man. Judge Philip Howerton, Jr. BA, JD: "It doesn't take an 'academically based' person to realize that the quarter page of known facts of William Shakspere's life can be mastered by a twelve year old and that all the rest of the stuff that has been written--in the attempt to connect his 'life' and the works--by [Professors] Brown, Chambers, Chute, Rowse, Schoenbaum, et al, ad nauseam, is, and always has been, as Vladimir Nabokov once put it, in another context, 'thirty-two percent nonsense and fifty of neutral padding.' "[Scottish Author]Josephine Tey called it 'tonypandy' [a nonsensical, untrue story grown to legend and accepted by the public in the face of all evidence to the contrary]." Michael H. Hart, Ph.D. in Astrophysics, Princeton. Author of The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History: "I made a serious error in the first edition when, without carefully checking the facts, I simply 'followed the crowd' and accepted the Stratford man as the author of the [Shakespeare] plays. Since then I have carefully examined the arguments on both sides of the question and have concluded that the weight of the evidence is heavily against the Stratford man and in favor of de Vere."
