Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive economic and political history of the Panama Canal On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal officially opened for business, forever changing the face of global trade and military power, as well as the role of the United States on the world stage. The Canal's creation is often seen as an example of U.S. triumphalism, but Noel Maurer and Carlos Yu reveal a more complex story. Examining the Canal's influence on Panama, the United States, and the world, The Big Ditch deftly chronicles the economic and political history of the Canal, from Spain's earliest proposals in 1529 through the final handover of the Canal to Panama on December 31, 1999, to the present day. The authors show that the Canal produced great economic dividends for the first quarter-century following its opening, despite massive cost overruns and delays. Relying on geographical advantage and military might, the United States captured most of these benefits. By the 1970s, however, when the Carter administration negotiated the eventual turnover of the Canal back to Panama, the strategic and economic value of the Canal had disappeared. And yet, contrary to skeptics who believed it was impossible for a fledgling nation plagued by corruption to manage the Canal, when the Panamanians finally had control, they switched the Canal from a public utility to a for-profit corporation, ultimately running it better than their northern patrons. A remarkable tale, The Big Ditch offers vital lessons about the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects, American overseas interventions on institutional development, and the ability of governments to run companies effectively.

Book excerpt: The paper examines whether an interocean waterway through Central America is now or will in the forseeable future be of sufficient strategic significance to the U.S. defense posture to require retention of control over the Panama or a successor canal. The history and importance of the Panama Canal to world commerce were examined as was its wartime defense role.

Book excerpt: This book discusses in depth the importance and history behind the Panama Canal. To the uninitiated, the Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. Colombia, France, and later the United States controlled the territory surrounding the canal during construction. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped because of lack of investors' confidence due to engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project on May 4, 1904, and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Panama Canal is studied beginning with its conception and construction. The treaty arrangements which have applied in the past, present negotiations and their possible future implications are discussed. Panama's desire for control is examined and the strategic importance of the canal is evaluated. There is a chance that Panama's wishes may be gratified, however a number of Congressmen view a new treaty with disfavor. In the opinion of the author, the United States should retain ownership and control of both the Canal and the Zone. (Author).

Book excerpt: From the earliest days of European colonization, the traffic crossing the Isthmus of Panama has been a primary source of income for the inhabitants. Surveys for the building of a canal were made as early as 1534. Spurred by the acquisition of Florida and of California in the wake of its 1849 Gold Rush, the United States determined that it was in its national economic interests to build a canal across Panama. With the emergence of the U.S. as a global power, the canal took on increased national strategic importance. The Canal Treaties of 1977 generated much discussion as to whether the canal retains the same high level of national security interest it once enjoyed. This paper investigates the current economic and military value of the Panama Canal and possible U.S Coast Guard involvement in protecting United States interests there through an examination of the historical perspectives that are essential to understanding Panamanian-United States relations.
