Book Synopsis The Encyclopedia of Me by : Karen Rivers
Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Me written by Karen Rivers and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A is for "Tink Aaron-Martin," "Aardvark," and "Amazing" in this wonderful alphabetical novel! Tink Aaron-Martin has been grounded AGAIN after an adventure with her best friend Freddie Blue Anderson. To make the time pass, she decides to write an encyclopedia of her life from "Aa" (a kind of lava--okay, she cribbed that from the real encyclopedia) to "Zoo" (she's never been to one, but her brothers belong there). As the alphabet unfolds, so does the story of Tink's summer: more adventures with Freddie Blue (and more experiences in being grounded); how her family was featured in a magazine about "Living with Autism," thanks to her older brother Seb--and what happened after Seb fell apart; her growing friendship, and maybe more, with Kai, a skateboarder who made her swoon (sort of). And her own sense that maybe she belongs not under "H" for "Hideous," or "I" for "Invisible," but "O" for "Okay."Written entirely in Tink's hilarious encyclopedia entries, The Encyclopedia of Me is both a witty trick and a reading treat for anyone who loves terrific middle-grade novels.

Book Synopsis The Afterlives of the Terror by : Ronen Steinberg
Download or read book The Afterlives of the Terror written by Ronen Steinberg and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afterlives of the Terror explores how those who experienced the mass violence of the French Revolution struggled to come to terms with it. Focusing on the Reign of Terror, Ronen Steinberg challenges the presumption that its aftermath was characterized by silence and enforced collective amnesia. Instead, he shows that there were painful, complex, and sometimes surprisingly honest debates about how to deal with its legacies. As The Afterlives of the Terror shows, revolutionary leaders, victims' families, and ordinary citizens argued about accountability, retribution, redress, and commemoration. Drawing on the concept of transitional justice and the scholarship on the major traumas of the twentieth century, Steinberg explores how the French tried, but ultimately failed, to leave this difficult past behind. He argues that it was the same democratizing, radicalizing dynamic that led to the violence of the Terror, which also gave rise to an unprecedented interrogation of how society is affected by events of enormous brutality. In this sense, the modern question of what to do with difficult pasts is one of the unanticipated consequences of the eighteenth century's age of democratic revolutions. Thanks to generous funding from Michigan State University and its participation in TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes, available on the Cornell University Press website and other Open Access repositories.

Download or read book The Impossible Stranger written by Lawrence Thornbury, II and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A super human suddenly appears in present day Memphis, Tennessee, during a horrendous explosion of undetermined origin! Who is he? Where is he from? What is his mission? Why doesn't even he know who he really is, and how he ended up in Memphis? He gets into confrontations with drug dealers and the military, almost starts a nuclear war, falls in love twice, unknowingly becomes involved in an insidious plot and struggle for domination of the entire planet, and must face the second of his kind in an epic battle to the death. This is an extremely well thought out and fascinating book. It takes the concept of a super human to a depth never before explored. The science is realistic and well done, and the sociological and psychological implications of a super human are deeply, deeply probed. You will easily be able to tell that the writer did an enormous amount of research to make this novel "live." The style is very cinematic, and you will have to constantly remind yourself that this story is fiction.
