Book excerpt: The primary concern of this essay is to review the strategic significance of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore as they relate to the overall problem of freedom of the seas. Literature from the United States Army War College Library, the University of Washington Library, as well as material from the Seattle, Washington and King County Public Libraries were consulted. The geography and history of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore have combined to produce an extremely sensitive situation, which is of vital interest to the major industrial nations of the world, as well as all nations in the eastern littoral of the Indian Ocean, or the southwestern littoral of the Western Pacific. These two significant bodies of water affect not only the balance of power and the economic well-being of Asia, but the longrange settlement of the legal and actual status of all of the 115 straits throughout the world. In doing research for this essay, the author has considered logical alternatives and made recommendations which should form the basis of United States policy for dealing with this complex problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia, focusing especially on how the relationship has developed in the last fifty years. It argues that the political relationship between the two countries has been largely defined by rivalry, despite the fact that the processes of national self-determination began by emphasising Indo-Malay fraternity. It shows how the two countries have different, contested interpretations of Indo-Malay history, and how the continuing suspicion of Javanese hegemony which defined much of the history of the Indo-Malay world is also a key factor in the relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986, Lewis M. Alexander, a world-renowned marine geographer, prepared for the U.S. Department of Defense a report, Navigational Restrictions within the New LOS Context: Geographical Implications for the United States. Edited by J. Ashley Roach, the reformatted report is presented in five sections and includes 20 maps, illustrating the world’s international straits and major ocean navigation routes. Forty-three tables present the most comprehensive descriptions of the world’s straits used for international navigation, as well as identify various categories of maritime claims. What made the Report extraordinarily valuable in 1986, and which makes it equally valuable today, is the compilation of geographic data - not available elsewhere - describing the world’s straits used for international navigation and illustrations of the chokepoints and major international shipping trade routes. Roach has faithfully reproduced Alexander’s seminal work by retaining the original structure and references. A table of defined terms and an index have been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the Straits of Malacca, a narrow waterway between the Malay peninsula and the island of Sumatra, has been both a major conduit for long distance trade between Asia and the West and one of the most dangerous areas for commercial shipping. Casting a broad net across several disciplines, particularly geography and political economy, Donald Freeman examines the significance of the Straits as both a trade gateway and a choke-point that has forced generations of sailors to run the gauntlet. Rather than the more conventional historical-narrative approach, he offers an innovative adoption of an interdisciplinary, analytical perspective through his use of detailed case studies of trading systems and shipping hazards.

Book excerpt: Students come to study International Relations at university driven by a variety of motives and active concern to study great contemporary issues, such as the causes and persistence of war, threats of nuclear proliferation and terrorism, the persistence of global poverty amid globalization’s riches and longer term threats to sustainable development. Building on the success of the first edition, Issues in International Relations 2ed provides students with a clear, but stimulating, introduction to the most significant issues within international relations in the 21st Century. Written by experienced teachers in a jargon-free way, it assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, and allows students approaching International Relations for the first time to gain confidence in what is an often complicated and confusing discipline. Completely revised throughout with the addition of ten new chapters, this textbook; introduces key conceptual issues, including theories of international relations, power, sovereignty and globalisation considers contemporary global problems such as: force and security; law and military intervention; terrorism; the environment; religion explains the relationship between global politics and economics with chapters on international organisations, international political economy and development provides students with boxed 'revision-style' notes and case studies throughout the text and a guide to further reading and websites at the end of each chapter. This book is ideal reading for students on introductory international relations courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study is the first in depth examination of the environment and development of the Straits. Taking an integrative approach, the book argues that the region has an underlying unity which political divisions (between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore) disguise. Its emphasis is on three major elements: first, a study of the historical geography of the region illustrates its role as a sea-corridor which connected the markets of India and China. Secondly, that contemporary patterns of economic development and trade have continued to increase the strategic importance of the region. Finally, the text highlights the major environmental problems, such as pollution, traffic and tourism, that now threaten the sea and coastline.
