Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Vine In reference to technics this little book will, I am sure, be found totally deficient, for I have always contended that the reading of technical phrases and scientific tables is, to say the least, tiresome. The use, therefore, of technical language is tabooed in these pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit, He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He cleanseth it. - john XV. 1, 2. A vine is planted solely for the sake of its fruit. There are many sorts of vines, each with its different sort of fruit. When a husbandman plants a Vine or a vineyard, he selects that special sort of which he desires to have the fruit. The fruit will be the manifestation of his purpose. When God planted the Heavenly Vine, it was that its fruit might bring life and strength to dying men. The very life of God, which man had lost by the fall, was to be brought back to him by Christ from heaven; Christ was to be to men the True Tree of Life. In Him, the True, the Heavenly Vine, in His Word and work, in His life and death, the life of God was brought within reach of men; all who should eat of the fruit should live for ever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Vine At about the same time, a small grape of surpassing beauty and most excellent flavor, attracted the attention of Mr. A. Thomson of Delaware, Ohio, and was exhibited by him at the County Fairs, under the name of the Heath Grape; a few years later, after becoming fully assured of its great value, he introduced it to the public under the name of Delaware. But its great excellence proved a hindrance to its dissemination, for it was claimed that no grape of such high excellence could be of American origin. Mr. Thomson had become intimately acquainted with the characteristics of foreign vines, from those growing in his own house as well as from extensive observation, and never doubted as to the native origin of the Delaware, but was too modest to make strenuous efforts to vindicate his Opinions, although he never failed positively to assert his convictions. In consequence of various hindrances and discouragements, he did not vigorously undertake its propagation, and therefore it had little opportunity to make itself generally known as the American grape, but in the mean while, its character for beauty and excellence has not deteriorated, and in size of bunch and berry, it has greatly increased as Opportunity for development has been afforded. These periods are chie y in early spring, when the occur rence of night frosts and easterly winds endanger the Opening buds - wand late in autumn, when cold damp weather may render a little artificial heat desirable, either to promote the ripening of the wood, or pre serve from mouldiness the ripened fruit. Book excerpt: A rich romp through untold American history featuring fabulous characters, The Wild Vine is the tale of a little-known American grape that rocked the fine-wine world of the nineteenth century and is poised to do so again today. Author Todd Kliman sets out on an epic quest to unravel the mystery behind Norton, a grape used to make a Missouri wine that claimed a prestigious gold medal at an international exhibition in Vienna in 1873. At a time when the vineyards of France were being ravaged by phylloxera, this grape seemed to promise a bright future for a truly American brand of wine-making, earthy and wild. And then Norton all but vanished. What happened? The narrative begins more than a hundred years before California wines were thought to have put America on the map as a wine-making nation and weaves together the lives of a fascinating cast of renegades. We encounter the suicidal Dr. Daniel Norton, tinkering in his experimental garden in 1820s Richmond, Virginia. Half on purpose and half by chance, he creates a hybrid grape that can withstand the harsh New World climate and produce good, drinkable wine, thus succeeding where so many others had failed so fantastically before, from the Jamestown colonists to Thomas Jefferson himself. Thanks to an influential Long Island, New York, seed catalog, the grape moves west, where it is picked up in Missouri by German immigrants who craft the historic 1873 bottling. Prohibition sees these vineyards burned to the ground by government order, but bootleggers keep the grape alive in hidden backwoods plots. Generations later, retired Air Force pilot Dennis Horton, who grew up playing in the abandoned wine caves of the very winery that produced the 1873 Norton, brings cuttings of the grape back home to Virginia. Here, dot-com-millionaire-turned-vintner Jenni McCloud, on an improbable journey of her own, becomes Norton’s ultimate champion, deciding, against all odds, to stake her entire reputation on the outsider grape. Brilliant and provocative, The Wild Vine shares with readers a great American secret, resuscitating the Norton grape and its elusive, inky drink and forever changing the way we look at wine, America, and long-cherished notions of identity and reinvention.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Vine: Unfermented or Fermented-Which? In the controversial portion of this work the writer has carefully omitted the names of the advocates for the use of fermented wine. He has done this for two reasons: First, he desires no personal controversy; Second, he feels that the day is not far distant when the writers, or their successors or descendants, will regret to see their names connected with the advocacy of intoxicating drinks.
