Book excerpt: Ian Green OAM became a student of Buddhism in the early 70s. He has undertaken Buddhist training at Kopan Monastery and at various Buddhist centres throughout Australia and the USA.In 1981, Ian and his wife Judy moved to Bendigo to set up Atisha Buddhist Centre. In August of that year, Lama Yeshe, a senior teacher in Tibetan Buddhism, laid out the masterplan for a monastery, lay community, aged care facility and, right in the centre, a large structure called a stupa. Ian's life's work has been building this stupa, officially named, "the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion" by His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. In 2003 Ian heard about a large boulder of jade discovered in Canada dubbed "Polar Pride." A series of events led to the purchase of the boulder and the eventual creation of the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, a major international project to promote peace and harmony. Ian toured the Jade Buddha internationally for nine-years before it was housed in inside the Great Stupa. In the process the Jade Buddha visited 120 cities throughout North America, Asia, Europe and Australia and it is estimated in that time over 11 million people viewed it. During this time, Ian and his wife Judy travelled to most of these showings where they represented the Jade Buddha. Ian's work has been recognised with a Meritorious Award for Excellence in multicultural affairs by the Government of Victoria in 2009. He has also received Special Recognition for Honouring Leadership in Promoting Peace from Phap Vuong Monastery, San Diego. Added to this he was awarded Special Recognition for Efforts in Promoting Peace from the Office of the Assistant Chief of Police, San Diego and for Outstanding Contribution to World Peace and Tranquility from the International Buddhist Meditation Association in Hawaii. Ian's contributions have most recently been recognised in 2020, receiving a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to Buddhism and Interfaith Relations.Ian continues to live and work in Bendigo as Chairman of the Great Stupa to this day.

Book excerpt: In considering medieval illustrated Buddhist manuscripts as sacred objects of cultic innovation, Receptacle of the Sacred explores how and why the South Asian Buddhist book-cult has survived for almost two millennia to the present. A book “manuscript” should be understood as a form of sacred space: a temple in microcosm, not only imbued with divine presence but also layered with the memories of many generations of users. Jinah Kim argues that illustrating a manuscript with Buddhist imagery not only empowered it as a three-dimensional sacred object, but also made it a suitable tool for the spiritual transformation of medieval Indian practitioners. Through a detailed historical analysis of Sanskrit colophons on patronage, production, and use of illustrated manuscripts, she suggests that while Buddhism’s disappearance in eastern India was a slow and gradual process, the Buddhist book-cult played an important role in sustaining its identity. In addition, by examining the physical traces left by later Nepalese users and the contemporary ritual use of the book in Nepal, Kim shows how human agency was critical in perpetuating and intensifying the potency of a manuscript as a sacred object throughout time.

In the case of the Amitabha Stupa that vision came from Jetsunma Ahkön Lhamo who was recognized by His Holiness Penor Rinpoche as a reincarnate bodhisattva (tulku) and Palyul lineage holder in the Nyingma tradition of Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism. She saw that the Amitabha Stupa, built in Sedona during these troubled and turbulent times, would ease the suffering of the world and bring tremendous blessing to those who visit and live in the region. Jetsunma is the founder and spiritual director of Kunzang Palyul Chöling (KPC), and its worldwide centers for compassionate practice, activity and outreach. Jetsunma has built nearly three dozen stupas, bringing together the talents, resources, generosity and energy of hundreds of volunteers. To oversee the building of the Amitabha Stupa, Jetsunma invited one of the foremost stupa builders in the world, Tulku Sang-nang Rinpoche. Rinpoche came to Sedona to manage the Stupa's construction and to lead ceremonies that would create the most auspicious conditions for the building and empowerment of the Amitabha Stupa. It took 18 months to complete the Amitabha Stupa. The construction culminated with a three-day consecration ceremony in July and August of 2004. Since that time, tens of thousands of visitors from around the world have come to the Amitabha Stupa looking for healing for themselves or loved ones, solace from sorrows, good fortune, long life, help for those dying or deceased, and, most especially, for the ultimate goal of spiritual awakening. Most people have no idea that stupas are filled to the very top with hundreds of sacred objects. The Amitabha Stupa contains these offerings: sacred mandalas for prosperity, well-being and peace which antidote specific causes of suffering, close to a billion mantras for peace, compassion, and the pacification of negativity, precious medicines from around the world, and earth from every continent. Within the Amitabha Stupa there is also a sacred relic from the Buddha of our time, Shakyamuni (Gautama) Buddha! There are numerous other extraordinary relics from past living Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. These relics give the Amitabha Stupa its profound potency to alter the karmic fabric for all who stand in its presence.
