Book excerpt: On mobilization the Household Cavalry Composite Regiment was formed with one squadron from each of 1st and 2nd Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards. They joined the 4th Cavalry Brigade in The Cavalry Division and landed in France on 16 August 1914. This account begins with extracts from the private diary of Lt Col E.B.Cook, CO of the regiment which begins on 14th August wqhen the regiment was put under orders for foreign service. This takes the story up to 22 Oct 1914 when Cook was wounded by a shell and was sent back to England. At this point the story is taken up with extracts from the private diary of Surgeon-major Cowie, 1st LG, which continue to 11 November 1914 when the regiment was broken up with the squadrons returning to their parent regiments in the 7th Cavalry Brigade (1st and 2nd LG) and 8th Cavalry Brigade (RHG). The 1st Life Guards, less one squadron, joined the newly formed 7th Cavalry Brigade in the UK on 1 Sep 1914; this brigade was part of the 3rd Cavalry Division then also being formed. They landed at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914 and it is on the following day, 8th October the Regiment s War Diary begins. It goes on to 31 July 1915 and it makes a most interesting document, thanks to the officer who kept it, Capt the Hon E.H.Wyndham. Entries include all operation orders received from brigade, orders from other higher authorities, reports from squadrons in addition to the daily record of the regiment s activities. Casualties are named, officer arrivals and departures are noted. There are nominal rolls, rolls of honour which include details of PW and their place of internment, and lists of honours and awards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Waterloo Campaign, Wellington had only one division that was composed entirely of British infantry, the 1st Division. This consisted of two brigades of the most famous regiments of the British Army the three regiments of Guards. The exploits of the Guards at Waterloo have passed into legend. On that day, Wellington entrusted the most crucial part of his line to the men he knew would hold their position at all cost. That vital position was the Chteau d'Hougoumont, and those men were the Guards. As the great battle unfolded, the French threw more and more troops at the walls of Hougoumont, setting some of the Chteaus buildings on fire and almost forcing their way in through its northern gateway. Though almost an entire French corps was engaged in the struggle for Hougoumont, the detachment of the Guards valiantly resisted every attack. Then, as the battle reached its climax, Napoleon launched his Imperial Guard at the centre of Wellingtons line. Just as the French believed that victory was in their grasp, up stood the 1st Guards Brigade to deliver a devastating volley, followed by a ferocious bayonet charge from which the French never recovered. The experienced duo of Robert Burnham and Ron McGuigan have compiled the first comprehensive study of the Guards Division throughout the entire Waterloo campaign, from the initial deployment in Belgium to the Occupation of Paris. The book also includes an explanation of the organisation and composition of the two brigades and personal details of many of the Guards officers the men who saved the day at Waterloo.

Book Synopsis The First Conspiracy by : Brad Meltzer
Download or read book The First Conspiracy written by Brad Meltzer and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking place during the most critical period of our nation’s birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington’s character, but also illuminates the origins of America’s counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA. In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan. In the months leading up to the Revolutionary War, these traitorous soldiers, along with the Governor of New York, William Tryon, and Mayor David Mathews, launched a deadly plot against the most important member of the military: George Washington himself. This is the story of the secret plot and how it was revealed. It is a story of leaders, liars, counterfeiters, and jailhouse confessors. It also shows just how hard the battle was for George Washington and how close America was to losing the Revolutionary War. In this historical page-turner, New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer teams up with American history writer and documentary television producer, Josh Mensch to unravel the shocking true story behind what has previously been a footnote in the pages of history. Drawing on extensive research, Meltzer and Mensch capture in riveting detail how George Washington not only defeated the most powerful military force in the world, but also uncovered the secret plot against him in the tumultuous days leading up to July 4, 1776. Praise for The First Conspiracy: "This is American history at its finest, a gripping story of spies, killers, counterfeiters, traitors?and a mysterious prostitute who may or may not have even existed. Anyone with an interest in American history will love this book." —Douglas Preston, #1 bestselling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God “A wonderful book about leadership?and it shows why George Washington and his moral lessons are just as vital today. What a book. You’ll love it.” —President George H.W. Bush “This is an important book: a fascinating largely unknown chapter of our hazardous beginning, a reminder of why counterintelligence matters, and a great read.” —President Bill Clinton
