Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the C. W. S: The Jubilee History of the Co-Operative Wholesale Society Limited, 1863-1913 The Story of the c.w.s. Presupposes a general acquaintance with the co-operative store movement in England and Wales. The book may find readers, however, who have not had occasion to discover what economic and social principle that movement actually is built upon, and a few words of introduction therefore may be useful. It is in some respects unfortunate that co-operators have been obliged to adopt current terms like profit and dividend, for the use of these words has led to much misconception. For example, the modern store movement and the Wholesale Society freely are charged with departing from the principles of the Rochdale Pioneers, when to the student it is clear that the history of both consists in one logical, persistent, almost automatic working out of those principles. The Pioneers lived in a world where men on one hand were hidden to love their neighbours as themselves, and on the other were led in all economic matters to put self-interest first. The contradiction was a little more than they could endure; hence, while they also sought to advance themselves, it was with the dilierence of taking their neighbours along with them. This principle of mutual effort was not new; it belonged also to Owenite socialism, to trade unionism, to the friendly societies, and to every effort, social, educational, or religious, in which the good of one was the good of all. They applied it to trade and the consumer, by improving upon existing forms of mutual shopkeeping. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-operatives provide a different approach to organizing business through their ideals of member ownership and democratic practice. Every co-operative member has an equal vote regardless of his or her own personal capital investment. The contemporary significance of co-operatives was highlighted by the United Nations declaration of 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives. This book provides an international perspective on the development of co-operatives since the mid-nineteenth century, exploring the economic, political, and social factors that explain their varying fortunes and transformation into different forms. By looking at what co-operatives are; how they have changed; the developments as well as the persecutions of the co-operative movement; and how it is an important force in promoting development and self-sufficiency in non-industrialized areas, this book provides valuable insight not only to academics, but also to practitioners and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The introduction of co-operative societies into the Irish countryside during the late-nineteenth century transformed rural society and created an enduring economic legacy. Civilising rural Ireland challenges predominant narratives of Irish history that explain the emergence of the nation-state through the lens of political conflict and violence. Instead the book takes as its focus the numerous leaders, organisers, and members of the Irish co-operative movement. Together these people captured the spirit of change as they created a modern Ireland through their reorganisation of the countryside, the spread of new economic ideas, and the promotion of mutually-owned businesses. Besides giving a comprehensive account of the co-operative movement’s introduction to Irish society the book offers an analysis of the importance of these radical economic ideas upon political Irish nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neighbourhood co-op store was an essential element in the English shopping landscape for a century and more. Initially identified by the iconic co-operative symbols of beehives and wheatsheaves, eclectic store designs by local architects made a lasting impact on the townscape. Robustly independent local co-operative societies and lack of overall branding happily produced an unusually diverse range of architectural styles. And they were much more than just shops – their integrated educational facilities, libraries and halls made them a focal point for communities. The Co-op eventually offered a ‘cradle to grave’ service for its members. Behind the network of stores was the Co-operative Wholesale Society, the federal body responsible for manufacturing and distribution. Its factories employed thousands during the productive peak of the 1930s, and its architects brought modern design standards to bear on the whole gamut of co-op buildings. Co-op architecture is still around us countrywide, with everything from Victorian edifices to post-war artworks there to be seen and enjoyed. Using a wonderful selection of archive and modern illustrations, this book reveals the intriguing story behind the co-op’s buildings, from corner shops to vast department stores and innovative industrial structures. Remember, it’s all at the co-op now!
