Download or read book Life of St. Richard written by Alcuin of York and published by Dalcassian Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Richard the Pilgrim or Richard of Wessex was the father of the West Saxon saints Willibald, Winnibald, and Walpurga. He led his family on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land but died en route in Lucca (modern Italy), where he was buried in the church of Saint Fridianus. The earliest source of his life, the 8th-century Hodoeporicon (Itinerary) of Hygeburg, predates this work by the Frankish scholar, Alcuin of York. This work of hagiography tries to grant details into his saintly cult, which was growing among both Anglo-Saxon and Frankish churches in the 9th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard of Wyche: Labourer, Scholar, Bishop, and Saint (1197-1253) A few months before she was attacked by her last illness, the late Mother Francis Raphael Drane began to collect materials for a life of St Richard of Chichester, to whom she bore a great devotion. Unhappily, she was unable to proceed far in her task, and left merely some notes and references, sufficient, however, to indicate roughly the lines on which she had intended to work. The present volume has been compiled, as far as was possible, according to the idea suggested by these notes, which show that Mother Francis Raphael had planned not only to describe the life of St Richard as Bishop of Chichester, but also to give a picture of his early and later surroundings, bringing out what she believed to have been their influence Upon him, and their share in the formation of his character. She wished, in fact, to present the story of her hero as a living portrait within a living frame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Evensong written by Richard Morris and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parish churches have been at the heart of communities for more than a thousand years. But now, fewer than two in one hundred people regularly attend services in an Anglican church, and many have never been inside one. Since the idea of 'church' is its people, the buildings are becoming husks - staples of our landscapes, but without meaning or purpose. Some churches are finding vigorous community roles with which to carry on, but the institutional decline is widely seen as terminal. Yet for Richard Morris, post-war parsonages were the happy backdrop of his childhood. In Evensong he searches for what it was that drew his father and hundreds like him towards ordination as they came home from war in 1945. Along the way we meet all kinds of people - archbishops, chaplains, campaigners, bell-ringers, bureaucrats, archaeologists, gravediggers, architects, scroungers - and follow some of them to dark places. Part personal odyssey, part lyrical history, Evensong asks what churches stand for and what they can tell us; it explores why Anglicanism has often been fractious, and why it has become so diffuse. Spanning over two thousand years, it draws on new discoveries, reflects on the current state of the Church in England and ends amid the messy legacies of colonialism and empire.
