Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Silk Cheney Silks In the last spring month the young empress was wont to purity herself and offer a sacrifice to the goddess of the silk worms. She herself would go to the fields and gather mulberry leaves. The raising of the silk worms was so important that at this season she would dispense with the waiting women who sewed and embroidered for her, and forbid similar work for the noble ladies and ministers' wives in order that all might give their attention to the culture of the worms. As this suggests, the silk industry in ancient China was considered so vital to the prosperity of the people as to be interconnected with various religious rites. From a compilation made by the Chinese government of the early notices and rules in regard to silk culture, it is possible to get a very good idea of the methods they employed even in the earliest, as well as mediaeval, times. There are also several paintings on antique porcelains and a number of quaint wood cuts by ancient Chinese artists, which serve to visualize the industry and give something of its atmosphere as it existed in those far off days. Low-Show, for example, in 1210 produced a whole series of 46 wood cuts showing the processes of agriculture and silk culture which had already been in use from time immemorial. The industry naturally fell into the great divisions of Chinese Industry The Mulberry Tree raising the mulberry trees, producing cocoons, reeling, and weaving the silk. It was early recognized that there were two great species of mulberry trees, - the loo, or large mulberry, which was common in the north, and the king, or dwarf, which was native to the south. The king was more hardy, but the loo had larger and more abundant leaves. For this reason the Chinese early learned to graft a slip from the large on to one from the dwarf mulberry, and to raise the trees from such slips, with the dwarf one furnishing the root. Oil cakes and decayed fish were used for fertilizer. As the tree grew it was carefully pruned by cutting off the central branches, so as to make it spread and increase the foliage. Book excerpt: "This project is the first comprehensive study of a phenomenon that not only dominated the American arts of the 1870s and 1880s, but also helped set the course of such later developments in the United States as the Arts and Crafts movement, the indigenous interpretation of Art Nouveau, and even the rise of modernism. In fact, the early history of the Metropolitan--its founding, its sponsorship of a school of industrial design, and its display of decorative works--is inextricably tied to the Aesthetic movement and its educational goals. "In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement" comprised some 175 objects including furniture, metalwork, stained glass, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, painting, and sculpture. Some of these had rarely been displayed; others, although familiar, were being shown in new and even startling contexts. The exhibition and catalogue are arranged thematically to illustrate both the major styles of a visually rich movement and the ideas that generated its diversity"--From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest hopes and expectations that accompanied American colonialism – from its earliest incarnation – was that Atlantic settlers would be able to locate new sources of raw silk, with which to satiate the boundless desire for luxurious fabrics in European markets. However, in spite of the great upheavals and achievements of Atlantic plantation, this ambition would never be fulfilled. By taking the commercial failure of silk seriously and examining numerous experiments across New Spain, New France, British North America and the early United States, Ben Marsh reveals new insights into aspiration, labour, environment, and economy in these societies. Each devised its own dreams and plans of cultivation, framed by the particularities of cultures and landscapes. Writ large, these dreams would unravel one by one: the attempts to introduce silkworms across the Atlantic world ultimately constituted a step too far, marking out the limits of Europeans' seemingly unbounded power.

Book excerpt: The incredible story of nineteenth-century millionaire William Skinner, a leading founder of the American silk industry, who lost everything in a devastating flood—and his improbable, inspiring comeback to the pinnacle of the business world. In 1845 a young, penniless William Skinner sailed in steerage class on a boat that took him from the slums of London to the United States. Endowed with rare knowledge in the art of dyeing and an uncanny business sense, he acquired work in a fledgling silk mill in Massachusetts, quickly rising to prominence in the nation’s new luxury industry. Soon he opened his own factory and began turning out one of the bestselling silk brands in the country. Skinner was lauded as a pioneer in the textile industry and a manufacturer who knew no such word as fail. His business grew to sustain a bustling community filled with men, women, and children, living and working in the mill village of “Skinner-ville,” producing the country’s most glamorous, fashionable thread. Then, in 1874, disaster struck. Hundreds of millions of gallons of water burst through a nearby dam, destroying everything in its path, including Skinnerville. Within fifteen minutes, Skinner’s entire life’s work was swept away, and he found himself one of the central figures in the worst industrial disaster the nation had yet known. In this gripping narrative history, Skinner’s great-great-granddaughter, Sarah S. Kilborne, tells an inspiring, unforgettable American story—of a town devastated by unimaginable catastrophe; an industry that had no reason to succeed except for the perseverance of a few intrepid entrepreneurs; and a man who had nothing—and everything—to lose as he struggled—and succeeded— to rebuild his life for a second time. American Phoenix offers a new twist on the American dream, reminding us that just when we thought the dream was over, it may have only just begun.
