Book excerpt: Reverend Dr. Charles Leach was the only Member of Parliament who has ever lost his seat for being of 'unsound mind'. Worsted to Westminster charts how he rose from a humble birth in rural Yorkshire to become a shoemaker, prominent preacher, lecturer, traveller, writer, socialist, businessman, army chaplain, and MP. His ability to be where the action was, makes for a fascinating glimpse into the history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: From “the leading novelist of his generation” (the Daily Telegraph)—a story about marriage, family, and 1 man’s 2nd chance At age 47, former playwright Frank Attercliffe lives with 2 of his 5 children in a 4-bedroom apartment on Walton Lane on the outskirts of an English suburb. For the past 3 years, his wife, Sheila, has been living with Maurice, a car dealer who owns a Rolls-Royce, a Bentley, and a Jaguar—a man rumored to have killed 3 people in car accidents. Attercliffe cowrites a weekend football roundup for the local sports column, and after a match, he is introduced to the beautiful actress Phyllis Gardner at his favorite watering hole. That night, however, Sheila comes home, having left Maurice and given up her current lover, Gavin. She wants to move back to Walton Lane with the entire family—but she wants Attercliffe to move out. With its cast of eccentric and endearing characters, including Attercliffe’s loquacious fellow journalists, his alcoholic mentor, and the daughters who force him to live in the moment, Present Times is a novel about marriage, changing family values, and 2nd acts.

Book Synopsis The Story of Sheffield at War by : Margaret Drinkall
Download or read book The Story of Sheffield at War written by Margaret Drinkall and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique account of the impact that the Second World War had on the city of Sheffield. Soon after the declaration of war, the government and the people of Sheffield realized that the Germans would make the city one of their prime targets, due to the importance of the steel industry. Also, for the first eighteen months of the war Sheffield had the only drop hammer in the country, which was capable of producing Rolls Royce crankshafts for Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft. Using contemporary diaries, letters, police accounts and other archive material, this book reveals how, despite heavy bombing, the people of Sheffield refused to be intimidated. It looks at the events that were happening in the city during the countdown to the war, such as the evacuation of the children not only to other safer districts, but to the Dominions, and the development of the Sheffield Home Guard, who started out as 'Dads Army' but were sent to London to relieve its Home Guard when the capital was under heavy fire from German rockets. Also included is a description of the protection of the dams above Sheffield and how the Ladybower reservoir was used as a training ground for the 'Dambusters'. Finally, there are accounts not only of Sheffield men who were taken as prisoners of war, but how the police dealt with the German and Italian prisoners at Lodge Moor Camp.

Download or read book The Story of Sheffield written by Tim Cooper and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheffield's story is one of fierce independence and a revolutionary spirit, its industrial origins having their roots in the same forests as the legends of Robin Hood. From Huntsman's crucible steel in the eighteenth century, to Brearley's stainless steel in the twentieth, Sheffield forged the very fabric of the modern world. As the industrial age drew to a close the city's reputation for rebelliousness spawned its popular reputation as capital of the 'People's Republic of South Yorkshire'. Yet in the wake of the Miners' Strike and the Hillsborough Disaster, the early twenty-first century has seen Sheffield retain its unique character while reinventing itself as a centre of education, creativity and innovation.
